I don't see what all the fuss is about this song, I think it's a great song and Blue Sky Noise as a whole holds up to their other albums quite well.
I think there's reason this song follows "I Felt Free", I think it's addressing the same relationship in a different light. Where in "I Felt Free" he takes a more optimistic look at it and addresses all the positive things in ending it . "Imaginary Enemy" takes a more accusatory tone, and puts the faults of the relationship failing onto the one he's singing to. Addressing her ungratefulness, and selfishness and need to make him into an enemy. He's tried to make it work, but he's tired of it so he let it all his frustrations out and ended it. Which lead him to feel the way he does in "I Felt Free". the songs could really be the other way around and make more sense in story flow, but the recorddoes seem to flow better in this order |

This song is amazing in every element, the melodies are great and Anthony's voice of course. As it's been mentioned that little bridge and breakdown is just awesome. I think the meaning is pretty clear in this one, probably the most straightforward song they've ever done. Beautiful song. |

I agree, I think narrowing it to be just about the record label is over-simplifying it. Atlantic didnt really change thier sound drastically anyways, so I doubt they really have too much regret over that. It seems more general life questioning and doubts. |

I think everyone's pretty much on the right track. It seems to be about a girl younger than him maybe 18 or 19 who seems to love him because he's older and more experienced in the world. The things he's seen have kinda jaded him though, and he doesn't want to corrupt her. He also starts to explain that he doesn't really love her, and he cant give love because he's taking no love from the relationship. ("I can't give what I can't take"). He does feel unworthy to be with her so he's glad to be able to f**k her. But at the same time he feels it's wrong, he doesn't want to weigh her down. But, he's so in love with the physcial gratification that he knows he won't stop it. So he wishes she would leave,before he drags her down into his jaded world, because he deserves more than that. Like some mentioned there kinda seems to be a glimpse of hope near the end of the song. He knows she sees more of him than he feels he is, perhaps part of him want's to be that ideal she has of him. And maybe he needs her to save him.
All in all great song. |

This song seems to be aimed at perhaps a parent or other support figure in his life that seemed to tell him he was never good enough, and never really supported him. He felt guilty about it for a while ("I'm looking for forgiveness for something I didn't even do) then realized he never did anything wrong, and so now he realizes they were holding him down and is turning away from them. |

ATLAS is a great track, im definately torn on what exactly he's saying... anyone tried figuring out Ddiamond yet? good luck, Battles seem to be that strange unique band ive been searching so long for... so different, so cool.. God I fucking love this song, Frusciante said he was really influenced by hendrix on this album, and you can really hear it on this song. The solo is pure hendrix influence... Everytime I put this song on by then end I'm totally bouncin around rockin out. There's so much feeling put into this song especially by frusciante, I dont see how you can not be moved by it. What I get out of this is it's about a relationship Chino had that ended very ugly way with the last words being said over the phone. This relationship must've meant a lot to him at one point cause clearly he's fuckin furious! They say there's a fine line between love and hate sometimes, I think he's contemplated it all, realized she's fucking crazy and the feelings have turned to a hatred. I had a simillar experience and when I listen to this song I really connect with the fury of it all. |

I think everyone has touched on the meaning in someway...I think this song has multiple meanings as many NIN songs do...but in general and fitting to the story of TDS I think it's about the char feeling absolute desperation, he has lost faith in everything, and this girl once loved him and gave him that feeling of being "closer to god" but i think maybe he can't have her now or wont let himself have her because he knows he would destroy her... and maybe because of that repression it has come down to that primal lust he doesn't care about love he just wants that feeling he gets so he wants to..."fuck her like an animal"
Also does anyone think that possibly the girl he's singing about in this song is the one he's also singing about in "reptile" i thought maybe in reptile it's the same girl and at that poibt he regrets how he let her infect his mind and maybe regrets the sex withthe girl taking place in this song?...just a thought |
