Damien Rice – 9 Crimes Lyrics 17 years ago
the way i see this song is that the couple is no longer together (though they had a very serious or at least very passionate relationship at one point in time) for mutually understood reasons. they both have incredibly strong feelings for each other and yet they are with other people to fill the void that they feel.

the first stanza strikes me as though she is thinking about him while she's having sex with someone else, and the second stanza while he's about to go after another woman. even though they're not together, he still feels like he's cheating on her.

as for the "chorus", their relationship is the loaded gun (as in "i'm denying/giving away my emotions while they're still tied up in you"), but they both recognise that if the other doesn't act on their feelings, they've got no choice but to leg go.

they both know that it's not "alright" and i agree with other responses that this line is terribly sarcastic. but it is the final response of "no" that's meant to shake things up...to perhaps heal things. by the male speaker (and perhaps the female speaker as well? i can never tell in the version i have) standing up and saying, "no, it's not okay that we're doing this to ourselves", perhaps it's meant as a sort of ammends; or at least a step in that direction.

just my two cents.

Stars – Violent Lyrics 18 years ago
This song reminds me of a relationship held together by sex. It's as though they've exhausted all forms of communication, and can only now take comfort in the physical aspects of love. Perhaps it isn't even the same love they once felt. They are together by circumstance, almost as though they know that they will be ruined if they seperate, but they are in a desperate situation by staying together; sex seems to be their only outlet.

...I could have sworn it said "the hard luck, girl, you never had a chance you know...", but I may be wrong...I definately don't hear any thing about Kurt Kobane in there either!

anyways, amazing song...no words...

The Long Winters – Cinnamon Lyrics 18 years ago
This might be rediculous and far fetched, but I think he either murdered this girl because he lost his mind or he watched someone else murder her, and the song is all about him remembering everything they did together while he's being interrogated in some institution. "Do you remember when you saw her last?" Would be the police/psychiatrist and all he can respond is "Her skin is cinnamon" because he's lost it entirely.

It's like a series of snapshots that are laid in a mess on a table. You don't know which one goes first or last or what belongs in between. It's beautiful and it's a catastrophe and yet it all fits together so perfectly.

"You're everything"

"You sat along the fire...you're saw the light, you're saw...
You sat along the fire....you're so in love, you're so...
You've suffered long,
You're so alone, you're so...
You sigh 'so long',
You sigh 'so long'
You shone (you shone...you sigh)

You sat along the fire
You saw the light...you saw
You sat along the fire
You're so in love...you're so...
You suffered long...
You're so alone, you're so...
You sigh 'so long'
You sigh 'so long'
You shone.

You shine no more...you're not here...
You hear no more, you're not here..
You sigh no more...and you're not here"

This is what I hear in this song. As my_name_is_emo said, this is what I hear because this is what it makes me feel. Beauty, loss, winter, love, distance, closure.

Sigur Rós – Starálfur Lyrics 18 years ago
I was listening to this song earlier this evening while reading James Joyce (Stephen Hero-the backbone of Portrait)...and let me just say, that was an intense experience. The combination of an incredible vocalist such as in the band and a beyond comprehensionable lyricist as found in Joyce is beyond description. I highly reccomend the combination...especially if experienced in a dimly lit room sprawled out on a bunch of pillows by the fireplace. Indescribable.

Imogen Heap – Hide and Seek Lyrics 18 years ago
On Wednesday afternoon, I was at my stables getting ready to ride when the owner of the farm pulled me from one of my horses' stalls and said that she had some horrible news to share with me. I asked her what happened, expecting to hear that there was something wrong with one of the horses, and she told me that the unthinkable had happened; a good friend had committed suicide the night before. All I remember about that moment was the feeling of utter confusion and disbelief...and that's the emotion that I pull from this song. I heard it just a few hours later for the first time (and entirely by accident), and after reading the lyrics, I realized just how profoundly appropriate it really was. The song feels much like the physical processes we go through when someone dies...the disbelief, memories, the physical act of picking yourself up and moving on, feeling as though no one else cares (and being devistated by that), and feeling as though no one else cares (and not caring enough to even acknowlodge it). Anyways, I might have been entirely jaded by my experience, but that's what this song means to me...however, I am glad that I don't watch the O.C., because I really think it would ruin a song like this for me.

peace.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness Lyrics 19 years ago
before you go off on someone, you might want to find out what their motive was for writing what they wrote. i am extremely ill as i have a condition called multiple connective tissue disorder, which encompasses a wide range of autoimmune diseases including lupis, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, autoimmune pancreatitis, ehlers danlose syndrome, posterior sclaritus, and linear coupe de sabre sclera derma (the most rare form) among other things. i have been living with this disorder since the age of 13 and it is slowly killing me...there is a possibility that i won't live past the age of 25. i am in an extremely serious relationship (we plan to marry in the next few years)...i was lucky enough to find my soul mate at a young age, but when i found out just how sick i was, i began keeping a book for him of my poetry and memories...just day to day things to let him know how much i love him and that even if i have to leave him, he will always be my first and only love. this was originally a musing...just some jumbled thoughts, memories, and images that i had put down on paper (excluding the mellon collie and the infinite sadness bit) while i was listening to this song. without trying, the words just kinda fell into place with the music, and i ended up with what i posted. so please make sure you have the whole story before you openly criticise.

the pumpkins have some of the most beautiful, heartfelt lyrics of all time...they are absolutely incredible...

U2 – Sunday Bloody Sunday Lyrics 19 years ago
Oh no, I'm not saying that it's not about that at all (I know full well that it is, my mom's cousins were there when it happened)...I was just saying what I got as the general message...as I said, it was without giving us any background information. He explained the actual meaning of the song to us afterwards (hence our segue into Cal). We actually watched a documentary on it and everything...it was insanely intense...I guess that I just saw it as a double meaning...like Bono saying "how can we do such horrific things to our fellow man" and using such a personal event to support his position.

U2 – Sunday Bloody Sunday Lyrics 19 years ago
I first heard this song while i was taking irish literature. we had just finished Joyce's Portrait of the Artist (and may i just say that James Joyce is fucking brilliant!!!!!!!!!!!!! Stephen Dedalus forever!) and were just cracking open Cal by Bernard Maclaverty when our professor broke out this song. Without giving any background information, he asked us to listen and interperate. as a whole, we came up with the impression that the song was suggesting that we as humans need to stop war and violence...the only people that we are hurting by initiating these massacres are ourselves. In war, there are no winners, only losers and there is no right...no fight can be completely justified, no matter how noble the cause (e.g. WWII and the destruction of the Nazis). Bono is simply siting an event that brought him great sorrow and trying to bring a heightened awareness to people to show them just what conflict can become.

The last time I heard this song played on the radio, it was the night that bush (i refuse to capitalize that filthy name) was elected (not reelected...he DID NOT win in 2000). I was driving back from my stables after a relaxing evening with my horse (my trainer was away...hehe, thank god!) and WBCN (one of boston's local alternative rock stations) just announced that the monkey had won. the dj, who, like me, is a diehard massachusetts democrat, said that to mourn the tragic state of our country, he would play the only song that he saw fit for the hour...and then Sunday Bloody Sunday started blaring through the speakers. And I started crying. I actually had to pull over on a side street to regain my composure...this is one powerful song!

And all you republicans out there...i am simply a passionate democrat (the only way that i will make it to see 25 is if the idiots in d.c. actually pass a bill alowing for goverment funding to go to stem cell research...im fighting a losing battle with JRA, akylosing spondylitis and Lupis) so please don't lambast me with mean comments because of my very personal political views. Thank you.

okay, so i know that this is pathetic, but i actually wrote lyrics to this song...let me know what you think!

melancholy and the infinite sadness
oh
melancholy and the infinite sadness
infinite sadness
now

the night has come to take me
now
your tears are the stars
from heaven above
your words are the rain
to carry me on
your love is so true
yet i must say
i cannot stay
it's my time to go
it's my time to g(oh)

melancholy and the infinite sadness
oh
melancholy and the infinite sadness
infinite sadness
now

the sapphires sparkle in your eyes
i swear i'll never forget
that night
the impossible became
what's right
so indescribable
are the
moments of our lives
you've saved me
from all i believed
but i must leave
but you must believe
you must recieve
the light within me
the love within me
the night sets you free

melancholy and the infinite sadness
oh
melancoly and the infinite sadness
infinite sadness

and now it's time to sa goodbye
i love you
please don't
forget those nights
my...
my love i can't...
i can't go on

(remember you're the one i miss) - spoken @ the very end

Bush – Glycerine Lyrics 19 years ago
a few years back, my best guy friend was killed in a really horrible car crash. It was mid march and i was sitting at the counter of the local cafe listening to this very song. my best girl friend (who worked there) came bursting into the room just as gavin was singing (if i treated you bad, you'd bruise my face, couldn't love you more, you've got a beautiful taste) with tears streaming down her face and she grabbed me up into this pain-filled hug and just sobbed. at the time i had no idea what was going on, so i just held her against me and continued to listen to the song. it was when gavin began to sing the last chorus of the song that the father of another one of our good friends walked through the door and told me what happened. in all of my life i have never felt a pain so deep or so powerful...and i sincerely hope that i never will. but as long as i live, i will never be able to listen to this song without thinking of him...and i'll love him for the rest of my life.

Pearl Jam – Black Lyrics 19 years ago
Mothra and everyone else out there that are bashing pearl jam...take a deep breath, calm down, and actually listen to the music that you are talking about. If you had anything close to good pitch, you would notice that eddie, scott and aaron sound far less alike than you are suggesting. their primary keys are all different as well as the depth and weight of their voices. eddie is higher, with a more shallow, seattle gruge style voice, while aaron's voice is far more deep in most songs, with a much darker contrast against his music. and scott...well, have you ever heard him in concert? i think he hit maybe three correct notes maximum. but at any rate...creed is christian rock, which is sooo different from grunge, which, though influenced by the movement, is completely seperate from post-grunge/lite metal. grunge music is not so much about the ability of the artist as a perfect singer (not like some of these teenie boppers we have out there these days), but it is more about the ability of the artist to convey his (or her) direct emotions through the depth and bredth of their lyrics and their music. take for example, the music of billy corrigan, one of the most brilliant lyricists of our time. go on and listen to some of his live stuff...his voice is okay (i personally love it, but i know that it is obviously flawed), but the overall experience of his music is trancending...that was the point of the grunge era...to show people that rock music was not just some phase that led zepplin, the who, (and all of those other incredible bands) started, brought through into the eighties and began to peter out due to deaths and band break ups etc. grunge breathed life back into the rock scene and pearl jam, nirvana and the pumpkins were at the forefront of this movement. creed is backlash from an era that can never be copied. each of their songs is no different from the next and they are completely sappy and predictible. perl jam has a vast number of topics that they write on, much of them having little to do with eddie's childhood...take for example Jeremy, that was written because of an article that eddie read in a texas news paper about a boy that killed himself because of years of tourment by his peers. but if you really look at it, almost all good artists have songs inspired by real events...take for example Spaceboy and Disarm by the pumpkins, or glycerine by bush...all personal...yet absolutely brilliant (though musically spaceboy is somewhat week...it should have been a more quietly powerful song...a lower key would have also worked better to ensure the seriousness of the moment...). pearl jam is such an experience...creed is simply a whiney man singing about something in which many hold no credence (haha, excuse the pun).

im sorry for all of you that came to read about the song...that was incredibly sidetracked of me. but i absolutely adore black, though i have a great deal of trouble actually listening to it because i am in such an incredible relationship (we plan to marry in the next few years) and i couldn't ever imagine losing him in any capacity...he is the other half of my soul...but an incredible song none the less.

Live – Dance With You Lyrics 19 years ago
Okay, so here's a really obscure take on this song. I'm sure almost everyone out there has read Homer's Odyssey in some capacity, and the first time I heard this song I was in the middle of reading it and it struck me...here's my interperitation...love it or hate it, I don't care, but it's mine and it's unique.

sittin' on the beach
the island king of love - Odysseus on Ithica

deep in fijian seas
deep in some blissful dream - if you look at the geography of the story, much of his adventures take place in the south pacific, which the Fiji islands are right smack dab in the middle of.

where the goddess finally sleeps
in the lap of her lover
subdued in all her rage - Penelope is finally reunited with her husband after 20 years, her anger quelled from his lenghty absence

and I am aglow with the taste
of the demons driven out
and happily replaced
with the presence of real love
the only one who saves - the suitors (demons) have been driven out of their house and replaced by Odyessus and their love for one another.

wanna dance with you
I see a world where people live and die with grace
the karmic ocean dried up and leave no trace
I wanna dance with you
I see a sky full of the stars that change our minds
and lead us back to a world we would not face - in reading greek literature and mythology, the greeks are always portrayed as such beautiful, graceful people. They held faith in their gods and were not ruled by anything but their own actions...even believing that their gods were not infalliable...just the encarnation of immortal people who faced issuse just like everyone else. Odysseus' need to go from ithica leaves penelope in a world that she cannot face.

the stillness in your eyes
convinces me that I
I don't know a thing
and I been around the world and I've
tasted all the wines
a half a billion times
came sickened to your shores
you show me what this life is for - Odysseus realizes all that he has lost by leaving penelope for such a long time, yet his passion and love for his wife still remains deeply within his heart. He travled throughout the world, his only purpose to return to ithica. he was housed and fed on many islands and by many people, but he still came home to his wife who was the only person able to remind him of the purpose life; love.

in this altered state
full of so much pain and rage
you know we got to find a way to let it go - everything has changed since Odysseus has been gone and his absence has caused so much anger and anguish for penelope, but now that he's back, she is able to set it free and simply be in love with her husband.

sittin' on the beach
the island king of love
deep in fijian seas
deep in the heart of it all
where the goddess finally sleeps
after eons of war and lifetimes
she smilin' and free, nothin' left
but a cracking voice and a song, oh lord - penelope and odysseus are finally back in each other's arms, and she is finally able to really sleep again because he is home to protect her. They suffered through 21 years of war and lifetimes lost from being apart, but now that he's home, she is finally complete again.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Tonight, Tonight Lyrics 19 years ago
This song is absolutely brilliant. I like to think of it as describing the night two people truly fall in love...the kind of love you only see in movies anymore.

"Time is never time at all" - When you're in love, you lose all sense of time because you, in a way, exist in a world completely separate from the physical earth (in the sense that when your lover walks into the room everything else disappears, someone can scream your name at the top of their lungs and you won't hear them because you are thinking about/with that one person, etc.)

"You can never, ever leave without leaving a piece of youth" - When you truly fall in love, it is like taking a giant leap into adulthood...and leaving a huge piece of who you were and of your youth behind.

"And our lives are forever changed, we will never be the same...the more you change the less you feel" - falling in love changes you in so many ways; you become so intertwined with that person that it is impossible to tell where they end and you begin. However, at the same time, you have to keep a grasp on your sense-of-self because you can't completely rely on another person to feel for you.

"Believe, believe in me, believe that life can change, that you're not stuck in vain we're not the same, we're different tonight tonight, so bright tonight" - You have to hold complete and total faith in someone in order to trust them with your soul...most often, true love pops out without warning and when you are least expecting it, so you can't sit around waiting for something to happen all of the sudden, but you have to believe that it will.

"And you know you're never sure but you're sure you could be right if you held yourself up to the light." - Powerful love can be extremely frightening, often forcing the lovers to question if what they are getting into is okay. But quickly they realize that as long as they are together and stay true to who they are individually, they can do anything.

"And the embers never fade in your city by the lake
the place where you were born." - Falling in love/losing your virginity to the person that you will spend the rest of your life with is in a sense like being born into a completely new skin. You will always have the memory of the passion and importance of those moments, and the place where they occured.

"Believe, believe in me, believe in the resolute urgency of now and if you believe there's not a chance tonight tonight, so bright tonight." - You have to except the term "falling" in love. It is often not a gradual thing. One moment, you might have a deep affection for the person in question, but you can turn around the next and you love them completely. It is as though something clicks in your brain and there's no turning back (not that you would ever want to!).

"Wee'll crucify the insincere tonight we'll make things right, we'll feel it all tonight we'll find a way to offer up the night tonight the indescribable moments of your life tonight the impossible is possible tonight
believe in me as i believe in you, tonight...tonight!" -This basically sums up the feeling of falling in love...though I've tried, it cannot be fully described to or understood by anyone who has not experienced a love of this depth and bredth.

Bif Naked – Lucky Lyrics 19 years ago
I totally agree with ChaosFluro24...I am one of the lucky ones; I found my one true love at a very young age and ever since the moment I met him, I knew that he was everything I would ever need in my life. Someone once asked me if I would rather live the rest of my life with only my soulmate (no family or friends) or have my family and friends and not be able to have him in my life, I didn't even have to pause to answer. I know that we couldn't exist without one another, and this song basically sums it up for me...especially the line "what could I say to you except I love you and I'd give my life for yours?"
