this song is definitely about love, but i'm not sure exactly the situation....one possibility is that he still has feelings for the woman that dumped him a while ago and every time he sees her around he feels in love with her again, and he's just trying to tell her that he's still in love with her.

i do believe that its about girls growing up and turning into independent women. the verses about wanting a car with a cupholder armrest and changer her name show a transition to a woman focused on practicality and professionalism.

some of these lyrics are wrong, but regardless this is one of my fave chili peppers songs. very laid back. it always seemed to me like a love song where he's falling head over heels in love and is telling himself he needs to slow down and get it sorted out. however, i do see how it could be about drugs.

as for meanings, i basically agree with everyone. however, at the end they do say 'ride that train' which i would guess to mean that once you've driven your life (train) in the right direction you can kind of ride it and enjoy the benefits of your work. |

I am 99% sure this song is about Jesus. It compares Jesus to a general who gathers all these soldiers then tells him he has to go into a great battle alone. It's a great analogy. I can see how the other meanings can work too, but given that dispatch is a christian band, it makes more sense.

i think this song is a prayer to God for forgiveness, and 'trouble' is dave's sin. he acknowledges that he was the one who caused the sin ("I confess you came because of me) but he wants God's mercy to shine on him and let him put the sin behind him so he can move on. |

I was listening to this song last night and I think I got the meaning of it... if someone already said this, then sorry - I don't have time to read the whole thing now.
I think the whole song is one big long metaphor for his life - it fits for everything. It's the only one/road/life that 'I have ever known'... and it's a 'lonely road'... and he's the only one walking the path of his life. And he's not sure if he's reached the end yet - he has to 'check my vital signs to know I'm still alive...' and I think it fits for everything.

ok...i basically agree with most of the stuff said. it's basically about the beautiful women who marry the absurdly rich and/or famous guys but secretly really aren't happy. the 'island' reference, in my opinion, is how the guy's money and fame have secluded him from normal society.
