A Wilhelm Scream – A Picture of the World Lyrics 11 years ago
This song is about a girl who while she's with her boyfriend talks about him all the the time (not letting him go). He says he fucked up by handing her the reins; he gave her his heart. Her feelings "oscillate" between the two guys and she ends up cheating on her boyfriend with this other guy and he walks in on it (finding out the worst fucking way). His rage boils and he wants to complain to someone, or just be miserable while someone's listening (dish it out). Someone tells him the old "god closes a door/opens a window" adage to which he thinks "if there is a positive to what she did, I can't see it." (if there's a positive...I'm not privy to it) The picture of the world is his miserable outlook on life and missing her. He wants to burn it for himself for catharsis and for his friends' sake so they don't have to listen to him be miserable anymore. However, it's not as easy as he'd like it to be and he's still suffering. He plots revenge and says that his karmic debt won't grow because of everything she has put him through. He thinks he's done nothing with his life but get closer to death, but when he was younger he was wide-eyed. The song ends with him resolving to get clear of what she put him through and move on, or go insane trying. (Familiar failure...I go crazy) Anyway, that's my take.

A Wilhelm Scream – Jaws 3, People 0 Lyrics 11 years ago
Also, while browsing John Hughes wikipedia page, I found out that "Jaws 3, People 0" is a name of an unproduced screenplay of his, which was supposed to be a parody of the Jaws series. Dunno how it is relevant, though.

Bad Religion – My Head Is Full of Ghosts Lyrics 11 years ago
The ghosts are god or some form of deity, or the ghosts are the unanswerable questions of faith. I'd bet on the second. Someone trying to figure out their faith, or lack of it. There's more to it, I'm sure, but I need more time to digest.

A Wilhelm Scream – Boat Builders Lyrics 11 years ago
I really feel like this could be about the wait for their new album. They keep trying to do it, but they're spoiled by the riches of touring (which they do constantly) and are telling the fans to keep faith (i.e. betting). I mean, it probably isn't about that, but it totally could be.

If Nuno wrote this, maybe (I don't know which ones he writes as opposed to Trevor). But I think Trevor writes most of the lyrics, and his father is still alive.

A Wilhelm Scream – The King Is Dead Lyrics 11 years ago
This almost reminds me of a sort of Lew Ashby-like (from the TV show Californication) person. I think it's sort of about someone who has reached the peak of their success in their art (in this case, likely music) but that success came at the price of having a life, specifically the love of this woman, who now won't have anything to do with him. He also starts to realize that maybe he's become a pawn of the music industry at the same time, and comes to the conclusion his life has no purpose as a loveless robot, so commits suicide.

A Wilhelm Scream – 5 To 9 Lyrics 12 years ago
I think you're pretty much spot-on, Superman. Except I think you got one line wrong, which is a very telling line: "The bar withstood the raising, which tastemakers allowed." To withstand means to fend off, essentially. So, in my opinion, it has more to do with the band trying to raise the bar, to bring more talent into music, but the community at large, and reviewers (for places like Rolling Stone, or the terrible Pitchfork), who are the tastemakers, have allowed a sort of dumbing down to happen. They hold the bar down where it is, instead of letting talented bands raise it.

Bad Religion – Wrong Way Kids Lyrics 12 years ago
I just realized; is Brett quoting Don Draper here:

The kids today are gone away petitioning the dust
With nobody to look up to because they're looking up to us

From episode 4, season 1 of Mad Men (aired 2007):
Roger Sterling: I bet there were people in the Bible walking around, complaining about "kids today."
Don Draper: Kids today, they have no one to look up to. 'Cause they're looking up to us.

A Wilhelm Scream – Jaws 3, People 0 Lyrics 12 years ago
I don't know if this was AWS' intention, but it comes off like any situation (particularly life-threatening) where people sort of...lose all civility and revert to their true survival, fight or flight instincts. Some kind of hell breaks loose (maybe in their own lives that's emotional, or something like an actual sinking ship). It comes up in the song as cannibalism (offering up snacks of younger ones) and in the penultimate verse. The use of cocaine in the final verse could symbolize that loss of control, and the ending is finally letting that devil (loss of civility, reverting to sheer animalism) inside you and becoming it.

A Wilhelm Scream – Anchor End Lyrics 12 years ago
I'm pretty sure this is about the aftermath of a long relationship that meant everything to the protagonist of the song. He becomes numb (I lie to those who love me by reciprocating...), self-loathing and an alcoholic, and he's an anchor who ends up dragging his friends down with him by constantly wallowing in his misery.

A Wilhelm Scream – These Dead Streets Lyrics 12 years ago
Actually, a lot of this, the first verse in particular, reminds me of a small-town created to get away from the huge city, but then as people from the city come in and urbanize it, it becomes uglier. Once a beautiful monument, now ruined with these corporate things. These rich citidiots (as my town refers to them), come down wanting an escape from the city, but want it both ways; they also want the comforts of easy access to all these things so they build things like corporate restaurants and such, or whatever. And the poor town is powerless to stop it, or in some cases is bribed to not stop it (whether blatantly or through "donations").

Bouncing Souls – Late Bloomer Lyrics 12 years ago
Mine was named Erin too, I mean, this was a girl I liked through middle school. It's interesting, because my crush on her is partly what got me ostracized and in a roundabout way, got me into punk. She's the first girl I thought of when I heard this.

I think it's about a girl who the narrator of the song had a crush on a long time ago (maybe high school or so) and sees her somewhere, and all these memories of her come rushing back; all he can think of is trying to talk to her and ask her out, but he can't because, like back then, he feels like he's an outsider and she's a cool girl, so she's out of his league. Regardless of this, a part of him feels he and the girl are equal, hence "you're no good, I'm no better...etc."

Its about the one crush that never goes away, because so its innocent and reminds you of a time when things were simpler. < I agree with that, Nick.

I know this is probably about finding a woman that you can confide in and makes you a better person.

But for me, this will always be about finding the local punk rock scene (that I did not know existed for a very long time) and how before that you felt so empty, and you find it. And these people understand you.

Bouncing Souls – Gasoline Lyrics 13 years ago
I think this song is about how we need constant stimulation and are ignorant of the world around us because of it. We're fed with constant stimulation and we don't try to do anything to change the world, we take life from a can and are happy with it, instead of trying to improve it, because we're so obsessed with our own hedonistic tendencies. There's also an element not quite of self-loathing, but again, because we're fed so much shit we don't have to look at ourselves and change ourselves, we don't want to have to introspect because we wouldn't like what we see. I think the gasoline itself is supposed to be used to burn our past and the parts of our personality we don't want to see.

I don't think it had to be 80s really. Just your photos at punk shows. I think the description says "your old punk rock photos." So you hanging with a bunch of punks wearing band shirts would probably do it too.

I get more out of it than that. My first punk concert was recent (Bad Religion with The Bouncing Souls and Off With Their Heads) even though I'm 19. And I talked with the guy next to me before and during and we sort of became concert friends and afterwards exchanged information and he hugged me, not full on, more of the shake and back pat thing we do nowadays. But it made me think about how we're all involved in this subculture and we share our ideals and we're all automatically unified by that one thing. Sort of like nerds (not using the word negatively) at a comic-con, or even just smokers and one asks them for a cigarette or a light. There's an instant connection, and instant camraderie (sp?). I think that Bad Religion (I forget if this is a Brett or a Greg) are reflecting on their younger days and how that was, and describing it and how life has tried to knock them down but they don't fall.

Really, I think it's about being young, being part of the punk subculture that is rejected by society and the unity that comes from that, (as well as making bad decisions, sometimes more than once and having fun) and maybe they feel it has faded for them (or not, I don't know) and how they looked up to people like Darby Crash and The Adolescents and now they're the ones everyone looks up to.

I think it is about someone who has been unfaithful, a drinker, miserable, etc. Who wants to clean up his act for his wife/girlfriend, especially when he finds out she's pregnant (There's another one on the way). I just don't get the references to Moscow or the opera...

The Gaslight Anthem – Here's Looking at You, Kid Lyrics 15 years ago
Just some food for thought:

This phrase is actually a toast that originated around the fights that occurred in the pubs of old. It was commonplace for a patron to wait until his adversary was drinking from their stein of ale (and their vision was therefore blocked by the stein) to attack ... it bettered their odds of success. Tis led to the development of the glass-bottomed stein in which the drinker could keep the other patrons in their vision even when drinking.

Thus came the toast "Here's looking at you"

Third Eye Blind – Non-Dairy Creamer Lyrics 15 years ago
I'm creaming for their new album. This song is amazing. I think its fairly wide. I think its socially critical of those who try to look better by making themselves completely fake, as well as a political criticism of how politicians make big deals out of things that shouldn't be, like gay marriage. As if that destroys the family. "Family Values." So, all in all I think its a criticism of being fake and of the propaganda put forth to get people to agree to something.

I think this might be about relationships, using his own as a model. How he might care about someone but he knows he won't be the first and he won't be last. "Another day, another crash." could be a reference to his assumed moniker. I don't know. Just some speculation. Very good song though.

its about rape. The first verse is probably using the Just World Hypothesis. It states that some people who need to believe the world is just, and have predictable consequences will blame victims for what happens to them (this is especially prevalent in rape, usually in the form of women who wear sexy clothing, or may have flirted with their rapist beforehand) The second verse talks about the idea that rapists want their victims to keep silent, and to not fight back, and maybe he think that the woman thinks she better than others for doing just that (which, is usually untrue). The third is probably talking about the rape itself.

Mos Def – Rock N Roll Lyrics 16 years ago
It's not anti-white. He's saying it because a lot of people ignore the Black roots of rock n' roll, and revere the white roots (Oh, and Elvis sucked. Great voice, horrible music.) Now, I like the Stones, I do, but I like Nina Simone, and Bo Diddley, and John Coltrane (though he was a jazz musician, not a rock and roller, per se) the two can co-exist, he's saying that the musical genre itself was stolen, basically plagiarized, because people don't recognize the Black roots of rock and roll as much as the White roots. Ice-T said the same stuff when he started with Body Count and people were dissing him, calling him a sellout.
