I sincerely disagree! This song is even more twistedly hilarious than Culling of the Fold. Except they didn't hide it as a b-side like they did with that one. (Allegedly Jenny thought it was too violent for the album.) Awesome lyrics, awesome music...I love how they grow so much between albums. I really can't wait for this one! |

This song is great for someone who was raised Catholic and realized how made-up it all is. The point of the song is a condemnation of all the rules and restrictions that have lost their purpose. The rest of the lyrics are just examples and illustrations of that point. I completely agree with her, but I've had two thoughts after considering the lyrics. Is it implied that her stupid question is about female masturbation, given that line's placement in the song, and the other references to repressed female sexuyality? Also, I really like the picture she creates of this creepy priest savouring the "naughty" confessions of the young people that come to him. Great song... am I the only straight guy that listens to Alanis btw? ;-) |

i dont think anyone except half of america thinks 9/11 was anything more than a tragic event that happened over 4 years ago. i wouldnt expect it to be on everyone's minds across the atlantic. that being said, it's a topic whose results are ongoing and affect people every day in some way. the whole "war on terror," etc. even if it's just to be pissed off that it's going on. franz ferdinand have songs about far more trivial topics. i dont know what this song is about for sure, but alex has said he hopes people interpret their songs differently, so they belong to the listener and not to the writer. they probably write a number of their songs to have parts which can lead the listener to think differently about the song. btw, the UK has troops in iraq too, it't not just the US. |

Thanks for the info about "The Only Difference." This song is awesome live, and one of the best on the album. BTW, if you turn it up a bit and play it on decent speakers, you can hear a low voice saying "Fall asleep, fall asleep."
Anyways, it sounds like the singer liked the popular girl at school his whole life, but he wasnt in her crowd (just an outsider). As life continued, he still felt like he was alway a step behind the cool people. He tried to convince himself that the shiny-happy people are just putting up a facade, and eventually comes to know it's true. So when his dream-girl has gotten older and faded, she notices him finally. Except he has lost interest or given up, resorting to drugs to console him. The last line "The only difference is what might be is now" is open to interpretation.... |

Coney Island and the Statue of Liberty are NY landmarks because she's based in Brooklyn, and there are a few references to crossing the Atlantic to be in Europe with him. Kind of a cute song because it acknowledges it's sappy. |

i kind of get the impression poe is mainly liked by girls and gay boys. however, being neither of those, i still think her albums kick ass, and she's even better live. this song is pretty obvious in meaning, and i think despite the jocular/sarcastic tone, it actually conveys the message rather eloquently. and it sounds great. i miss poe, i hope she comes back soon... =( |
