well, i live in this "marin" that they're talking about in this song i can can tell you excactly what they're saiying.
hes saying how everything is crappy around the bay area "i squish dead fish between my toes" and then how "There will always be a moon
Over Marin" which means that marin (which is a county full of rich people basically) is important just cuz of these rich people. he's using the moon as a metaphor. |

This song is BILLIE JOE writing about himself and questioning whether he is gay/bisexual whatever. there is no question that it is about questioning sexuality. and "mom and dad" means anyone who doesnt understand whats going on with him. |

This kind of contradicts the rest of the song. Maybe its the guy talking to his friend who's trying to persuade him (?) |

Yea, I think this is one of those songs that can mean anything anyone wants it to mean. Personally, I think its about someone who wants to prove that he can do/finish something even though hes not getting anything out of it (somebody left with the cup). He's putting aside all his other responsibilities in order to prove something else. |
