Pink Mountaintops – And I Thank You Lyrics | 14 years ago |
"for those hard times have already have ?" i hear "have already blown" i think "oh we misunderstood" is "BE misunderstood" and "but with madness oh they must come for ?" is "oh must come fulfillment" |
Elliott Smith – Untitled (Sticks and Stones) Lyrics | 18 years ago |
this song isnt called sticks and stones, according to a source close to him this song was still untitled when he passes away. Anyway it's my favorite of the recently leeked unreleased material. Never did he write a song this completely angry at the people in his life before. I think it's tragic this one didnt make the cut for Faboth, such a fantastic song musically and lyrically. And you gotta love the 2:45am reference. |
Elliott Smith – Punch and Judy Lyrics | 19 years ago |
ok im a fool.. just realised ive been listening to the demo he did for the song, not the version he released, thats why i had the different lyrics... i think i prefer the demo lyrics more though. |
Elliott Smith – The White Lady Loves You More Lyrics | 19 years ago |
i think people always take the term 'white lady' as a heroin reference because of the velvet underground song 'heroin' in which he says 'heroin, its my wife and its my life' This drug has always had such references - wife, ex wife, white lady.. but i guess it could be coke as well.. |
Elliott Smith – Single File Lyrics | 19 years ago |
'your arms got a death in it' is a pretty clear and obvious reference to shooting up. I would say thats a reference to drugs. |
Elliott Smith – No Name #6 Lyrics | 19 years ago |
does no one have a comment on the meaning of this song? I havent quite figured it out yet, but I am curious to hear anyones opinion. I especially love the line 'youre only happy just for now'. |
Elliott Smith – Figure 8 Lyrics | 19 years ago |
agreed. and sure, others could do it, but it would never sound like he could make it sound, at least not for me. he had something rare. |
Elliott Smith – Either/Or (No More) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
this might be my favorite of his unreleased songs. He really really should have left this one on either/or, it clearly deserved to be on there. brave or bored, champion or chore, posing as harcore, up against and for - either or. Exactly. The choices in life, the polar opposites, one or the other.. whatever. I love his wordplay in this song. He really made it sound good rather than focus on a story with a message inside it. There is a message, but its a different song for him. Filling in these blanks that you create Every time you win some petty score Posing as hardcore, oh yeah, either/or -i have felt this many times with people Either/Or - taken from a great book by Kierkegaard... oh existentialism, how i love you. |
Elliott Smith – Angeles Lyrics | 19 years ago |
maybe about gambling in the symbolic sense, as in gambling with his life, career, drugs, etc... knowing hes getting into something he cant really control, but its a risk hes taking. Not gambling at a casino.. though i guess that could be the obvious, lacking any analysis interpretation. oh and to Blue Sighs, the lyric 'poison arms around you' could clearly be interpreted as drugs because drugs are a poison you can inject into your arm, and they overtake you, poison you, consume you with their 'arms around you'... but the same could be said about the big money music business people.. they are like a bad drug in most cases. They will give you something you think you really want, but after a while they will overtake you and reduce you to nothing more than their slave. |
Elliott Smith – 2:45 AM Lyrics | 19 years ago |
"no one has said a single thing about his step-father or his family life. " no offense but i think this is a bit insulting to him as a songwriter. he did not just write songs about his sad childhood, and it is kind of rude to make a statement like that, as though all his songs were always about that, like he had no ability to think about anything else. Its as one-dimensional as the "all his songs are about drugs/alcohol" steriotype. He was a very creative songwriter and the fact that so many people got so many different meanings out of the song i think would have made him very happy. He didnt try to write songs so everyone would analyze his past, in fact breaking down his lyrics was something he didnt really like people doing, and he rarely went into much explination of his songs. Also, i think the point of this place is to add your interpretation of the song, what it means to YOU. Not - this is exactly what Elliott was saying in this song. How boring would that be if we just had one persons idea as the be all end all. Not to mention no one here is Elliott, so its imposible and rediculous to say this is exactly what he meant. |
Elliott Smith – Last Call Lyrics | 19 years ago |
yeah elliott tended to do that a lot in his songs, start in third and change it to first, or the other way around, or go back and fourth. He knew how to create a story in your head. This song is beautiful. At first listen i felt it was just anger and wanting to just be left alone to sleep for as long as you want (or to sleep forever). But the alcohol thing makes sense when reading the lyrics. Beautiful damn lyrics too.. I can say that these lines have so much behind them for me.. I wanted her to tell me that she would never wake me I'm lying here waiting for sleep to over take me for me it describes my imsomnia perfectly, i have felt those lines much too much for far to many years. I love this song. |
Elliott Smith – Drive All Over Town Lyrics | 19 years ago |
before i read the lyrics i got the sense that it was about a couple, and something happened and she left and hes scared.. but now i see it is about cheating. |
Elliott Smith – No Name #3 Lyrics | 19 years ago |
no one has any interpretation of this song? well i guess the lyrics are simpler than most of his... or maybe just open to too many interpretations cause its not very specific. When reading the lyrics i get the image of a couple, together, late at night. I also love these lines: -watched the dying day -blushing in the sky Always knew exactly how to describe something in the most beautiful way. When i first heard the song all I could think of was 'everyone is gone, home to oblivion' and how perfect and true those lines are. |
Elliott Smith – No Name #2 Lyrics | 19 years ago |
it does sound like a girl telling her guy something that has the potential to ruin their lives (could be pregnancy or something else).. when i first listened to the song i got the idea that she was trying to tell him important and having a breakdown but he didnt care and hung up on her cause he was on the other line and just didnt give a shit about her.. but reading the lyrics it seems there is a bit more to it then that. |
Elliott Smith – No Name #1 Lyrics | 19 years ago |
this at the moment is my favorite Elliott song, and it is definately my favorite on Roman Candle. I LOVE this album.. it is so underrated by fans.. as stated above his gf begged him to record his songs, and Cavity Search heard some and wanted to put out a single so he sent these songs and they loved them all and put them all out. I love that story. He was so great. He didnt care about people hearing his music, these songs were cathartic, a way to deal with the pain, express it in the only way you really can. I relate to this song on so many levels. |
Elliott Smith – Condor Ave. Lyrics | 19 years ago |
about this* |
Elliott Smith – Condor Ave. Lyrics | 19 years ago |
wow, i always missed the story in this one when listening to it, but reading the lyrics makes me love it even more. I think this might be a story he heard or something that happened to someone else he knew, i dont recall hearing anything about something like that happening to him. That would make it one of the less autobiographical tracks on this album.. but wow.. i thought lask kiss was a good song about thing, but this one FAR surpasses it. |
Elliott Smith – Roman Candle Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I also had all his other albums before this one (cause it was the hardest to find), and it had the same effect, it blew me away, so specific, so angry. Its my favorite of his right now.. Im at that age where I feel similar things to what he felt around that time. The fact that he opened his first album with this track, and named his first CD after it, i think sort of is a statement for his entire career. These songs were his songs, random, personal, floating around for some time - no intention for any stranger to hear them, a gf told him to record them and a record label wanted to put out a single, heard all the great songs and instead put it out as an album. thats how great he was without even trying. It blows my mind. After this album he started to work a lot more with metaphors and drug/alcohol symbolism as a way to maybe not make his family history so on display, but it was always there throughout the albums, that sadness, that anger about what happened. Its the perfect song for Good Will Hunting, and it makes me sad to think of him watching the early cut of the film with Gus in order to come up with miss misery. Watching some of those scenes must have been painful. I also think hallucinating could be a reference to when you're beaten so bad you cant even thing straight anymore, you see things, forget things, its that place where you are almost knocked out cold, but not. |
Elliott Smith – I Figured You Out Lyrics | 19 years ago |
yeah i actually read some more interviews and have some concerts where he explains his hatred of the eagles, its really funny when he talks about them. and how he doesnt like this song cause he thought it sounded like them, but it doesnt.. all his stuff is far superior. this is a great song, i love it. |
Elliott Smith – No Name #4 Lyrics | 19 years ago |
yeah it does make sense, but i am also curious as to what source he got that from. I think from the sounds of it, at first the mother takes her son and leaves, but decides she has to go back even though they both know thats a bad idea. hence the lines: Once we got back inside With one ear to the ground I was ready to hide 'cos I don't know who's around and you look scared it's our secret do not tell okay? Let's just not talk about it that would fit the fact that his mother and stepfather are still together. This is one of the best songs on roman candle. I love it. |
Elliott Smith – I Can't Answer You Anymore Lyrics | 19 years ago |
portland* |
Elliott Smith – I Can't Answer You Anymore Lyrics | 19 years ago |
this song again uses the term 'coast to coast'.. he really liked that expression i think.. he also used the moon and roses a lot in his songs.. he did live coast to coast a lot.. always back and forth from one extreme to the other.. (portand, mass, portand, ny, cali). |
Elliott Smith – Twilight (Somebody's Baby) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
for some reason i am now reminded of his song 'amity' in which he is talking about a girl he liked who in the song he says 'cause you laugh and talk and make my world rock' which reminds me of the first line in this song.. and also, he had said about amity that it was simply about someone wanting to be with someone, but they couldnt because they were too depressed or too addicted to whatever it may be, that they couldnt handle a serious relationship.. to me this song is a more in depth version of that song, lyrically.. it reminds me of the same situation. |
Elliott Smith – Strung Out Again Lyrics | 19 years ago |
this song is beautiful.. he always made the best most flowing melodies.. this one really reminds me of a dream... and he always talked about how a lot of his songs were based on dreams he had.. they werent supposed to mean anything specific... i see that a lot in this song. |
Elliott Smith – Don't Go Down Lyrics | 19 years ago |
lol yeah i was reading that and i thought, wtf?? |
Elliott Smith – Coast to Coast Lyrics | 19 years ago |
actaully the poems are recited by a friend of his.. from what he said about it, it sounds like he recorded 15 minutes of his friend saying this poetry he wrote as fast as he could and elliott took the parts he liked and put them over eachother so theres a lot going on and being said.. i always try and hear the words to the poem but its kinda impossible to figure it out.. i dont think theres any transcript around.. i love the part where elliott says 'thats why' over it all in the end.. oh and i was mistaken, the annaversary of his death was 2 days after the release of the album, the 21st. |
Elliott Smith – Shooting Star Lyrics | 19 years ago |
no i doubt this song is about chiba since he wrote most of the songs on this album years before he was with her, not to mention he was with her until his death so obviously wouldnt have recorded such a song about her.. it is probably about another girl from his past though.. maybe the same one he wrote 'somebody that i used to know' about. |
Elliott Smith – Because (The Beatles cover) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
he said the following about recording this song: another recent cover doesn't appear on the new album -- smith's otherworldly reworking of the beatles' "because," recorded for the *american beauty* soundtrack. smith, a fab four fanatic since early childhood, was initially reluctant to remake a beatles tune -- something about treading on sacred ground. "what's the point?" he says. "it was fun to do, it's just weird to think about. but that's the way most things are, and that's the way this record has been. it was fun to do, but not much fun to think about -- particularly that ocean of opinion that surrounds every record that people put out." |
Elliott Smith – Color Bars Lyrics | 19 years ago |
bruno S starred in some interesting films by director werner herzog.. he said this in an interview: more typical is the don't-tread-on-me defiance of "color bars." over a revved-up "dear prudence"-like arrangement, smith snipes at the shallowness of mainstream culture ("you're just some dude with a stilted attitude that you learned on tv") while simultaneously resisting its attempts to categorize him ("everybody wants me to ride into the sun/I don't want to go"). the song was inspired, he says, by werner herzog movies; more specifically, the brutish german actor bruno s., hardly an american beauty by any stretch of the imagination. "how come we have no bruno s. here?" smith asks. "how come he can be a film star in europe, but over here everybody has to look like they were computer generated?" |
Elliott Smith – Because (The Beatles cover) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
i agree.. usually i hate when anyone tries to do the beatles cause why do something thats already great, but witih elliott, he always somehow made it better.. at least for me. |
Elliott Smith – Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth) (George Harrison cover) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
lol im shocked that people actually post lyrics to songs he didnt write.. theres so many covers listed here. |
Elliott Smith – Come to Me Lyrics | 19 years ago |
sounds like a conversation between two people who care about eachother. one person is depressed and the other wants to help that person but they can not because its almost impossible to really help someone in that situation. Maybe the the person who is worried is coming to the realization that they should have seen the problem earlier, before it was too late. |
Elliott Smith – Flowers for Charlie Lyrics | 19 years ago |
i found out that was his name, it goes along with the earlier songs he wrote 'no confidence man' and 'some song' in which he mentions charlie. oh and some of the lyrics posted here are incorrect.. the one thats most obvious is: 'this is meaningless' in the live version i have he sings 'its a free world' |
Elliott Smith – Amity Lyrics | 19 years ago |
well heres his answer in an interview: elliott: it’s a really unguarded song - i made up the lyrics in a couple of minutes and didn’t change them. i like the way it feels, although it’s not an especially deep song at all. pc: no, not at all. but i love the feel of it. i was dancing around my basement a la uma thurman in “pulp fiction”. elliott: [laughs] it’s, i don’t know... just a big rock song. it’s a pretty simple song. it’s not so much about the words themselves, but more about how the whole thing sounds. some friends of mine said it sounded like i was trying to get something romantic going with someone, and that’s not what it was supposed to be about. it was supposed to be, “you’re really fun to be with and i really like you a lot because of that, but i am really, really depressed.” but i don’t know if that came across. when i said, “ready to go,” it was supposed to mean tired of living. pc: oh?! like, ready to check out of this world? elliott: yeah. sorry to make the song depressing for you now. [both laugh] pc: that’s ok, i’ll still listen. i, too, had thought there was a romantic element to that song. i wondered if the word “amity” was a play on the french word “amite.” elliott: actually, it’s a person i know. pc: my favorite part of the song is where you sing, “’cause you laugh and talk/and ‘cause you make my world rock!” it’s such a departure from your usual style of writing, i liked the carefree aspect of it. i remember thinking that most songwriters couldn’t write those lyrics and get way with it. if anyone else had written that, i would have thought, “what a moron!” elliott: yeah. [laughs] yeah. pc: but you’re intelligent and your lyrics are so clever that i got the feeling you were purposely letting loose and having fun with the song. elliott: it was very simple. i was saying, “i really like you and it’s really great to hang out with someone who is happy and easy-going, but i don’t feel like that and i can’t be with you. |
Elliott Smith – I Figured You Out Lyrics | 19 years ago |
im confused... who wrote this song? is it a cover or did elliott write it? and why would he trash his own song, a song that he performed live? and what does rufus have to do with it?? just curious. |
Elliott Smith – A Big Decision Lyrics | 19 years ago |
i love this song cause its so fast and its beat just makes me want to get up and move.. its like being on too much coffee.. or maybe like taking speed or coke or something lol.. but after reading the lyrics it sounds to me like a conversation between two people.. one is trying to tell the other to sober up, but the other knows this is impossible and will not happen. but the person still hopes for the best for the alcohilic and says 'I know you're not through with it yet it's a big decision'.. it can be applied to any addiction though.. and someone trying to help the person get away from this obsession.. but giving them time to come to terms with what they must do.. maybe to simple of an analysis.. i wish others would comment.. its a great fuckin song.. |
Elliott Smith – Miss Misery Lyrics | 19 years ago |
of course all of elliotts songs had some root in him (obviously, even though he always denied it) but this song was written specifically for good will hunting.. there is a big difference between the other songs in the film that gus just took from either/or and this song that elliott made up after he saw the film and gus wanted something specific for it.. it references the film in more than a few ways - getting drunk to forget about your problems (matt and friends do that oftan) - man in the park told me im strong (robin williams character) two tickets torn in half (he was supposed to go with minni drivers character but he didnt) trip out of town also goes with that obviously.. i come back when you want me to (he goes to her) do you miss me (does she miss him in the film, he knows she does) but thats more surface for the film that elliott used on purpose.. the idea of depression and misery was his deeper meaning of course... |
Elliott Smith – Amity Lyrics | 19 years ago |
yeah i could see it being about a girl and also about friendship, peaceful relationships, etc.. his songs all had more than one direct meaning.. this song works logically thinking about the meaning, and about her as a person.. i havent read the book cause it is an invasion of his privacy which he would have hated, but i think the idea of him not dating her cause he was depressed is odd cause he was usually in a relationship with someone.. even at the time of death he was.. so i dont see that as an excuse? |
Elliott Smith – Some Song (Help Me Kill My Time) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
also, lol i can understand getting a drug reference from needle in the hay, or even between the bars.. but this song is pretty far from having any solid drug reference like a lot of his songs did.. its very rediculous to get that out of this song especially... and oh how he hated the interviewers always asking him why all his songs where about drugs.. his answer was usually along the lines of - well you can use one thing to represent many things, it doesnt mean thats what its about.. its so rediculous to take every song and try to find his 'drug' reference in it.. he was not an idiot.. he had been through a ton more than just using drugs... but, i think im analysing too much and that is the kind of thing he also hated.. |
Elliott Smith – Some Song (Help Me Kill My Time) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
after reading anything and everything and seeing anything and everyone on him/with him out there i can say he did know somehow deep down inside his self-concious head that he had the talents of those he admired so much, or else he would have never went out and played shows and recorded so much music.. he was easily embarrassed. if he thought what he had to put out there was truly shit, he wouldnt have released anything.. i know he would never admit or accept his greatness but i think he had a clue. also, is it just me or is he saying 'CHARLIE beat you up week after week'?? at least thats what im hearing in the 'some (rock) song' version of this song.. he wrote this one when he was 26 and therefore probably still quite upset about the abuse he suffered as a child at the hand of that man.. theres also the references to Dallas where he grew up with his abuser and how sick it makes him feel just to be there now, and the 'call your mom' thing makes me feel like he probably ran away all the time or tried to escape this man and she probably went lookin for him at places like that, (and finally he just left to live with his dad) but those places couldnt help him anyway cause hes been too fucked up by the situation he experienced and it doesnt matter what anything or anyone tries to do to help him get over this experience cause he never will be fine... he also references Gacy 'the clown killer' in this song- Gacy, a seemingly normal nice man who happened to also be a kids clown at parties, who took to many teen boys and brutally killed them... this song is very clearly about adult abuse to children.. one of elliotts most obvious on the topic... also, when asked about his tatoo of texas he basically said something about how it wasnt cause he liked it there, in fact, just the opposite.. almost like it was there so he would never forget what he went through there and what he survived... |
Elliott Smith – Pretty Mary K (The Infirmary) (Figure 8 version) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
yeah, the whole OC thing really pisses me off.. i was shocked when someone on his message board said they played 'twilight' one of the best off the new album, on such a shit teen soap opera.. you know he would have NEVER let that happen if he was still around. but you wrote that last post before that episode aired? did they play another of his songs earlier on in the season??!!! |
Elliott Smith – Punch and Judy Lyrics | 19 years ago |
is there a version of him singing this song with these lyrics, cause in the version i have he says 'a wallPAPER punch talks to judy' and instead of 'can't you ever treat anyone nice? i think i'm gonna make the same mistake twice' he sings 'cant be careful when you're giving advice dreaming, you dont even know what you like' both lyrics fit equally well, i just wonder which of these versions was his final version. and i agree, this song shows of the perfection that is elliotts canon of music.. no one did it better. |
Elliott Smith – A Living Will Lyrics | 19 years ago |
now that i know exactly what a living will is, this song makes me very sad.. it reminds me of the times he talked about trying to kill himself but not succeeding. |
Elliott Smith – Christian Brothers Lyrics | 19 years ago |
that is very true.. i can relate to the drunk defence anger.. and the idea of needing help but instead getting fake sypathey and being told to take some pills or see a doctor when really you just need love. Great song. |
Elliott Smith – When I Paint My Masterpiece (Bob Dylan cover) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
yep, its dylan.. elliotts version is great! but check out dylans as well! |
Elliott Smith – Jealous Guy (John Lennon cover) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
he could cover lennon and beatles better than anyone else:( |
Elliott Smith – Bottle Up and Explode Lyrics | 19 years ago |
yeah this song is clearly about repressed anger and emotions.. it helps me deal with his death cause i understand what its like to take things shitty and bury them in hope that they will go away but really things build up eventually and you explode and it has to happen eventually, nothing can stop it. I think its the most accurate description of elliotts personality. |
Elliott Smith – Baby Britain Lyrics | 19 years ago |
yeah well he did love the beatles and covered more than a few songs of thiers. This one is a take on 'gettin better' obviously, and yeah it directly references the beatles lol. oh and elliott was a lot of things, but he most definately was not a hipocrate... his 'anti' person, as someone called it, was who he really was. he was as real a musician as this world has ever seen. |
Elliott Smith – Wouldn't Mama Be Proud? Lyrics | 19 years ago |
just to correct a lyric - its : part about to IMplode (not EXplode) i think it makes a difference in how one would interpret the song. |
Elliott Smith – Angel in the Snow Lyrics | 19 years ago |
very true |
