This song is about depression, and it's not solved by finding Jesus (for the dude commenting before me). Even those of us who are successful, attractive, rich, and well liked can feel lonely and depressed. We can have loving family and friends and significant others, but without the decision to be happy, you won't be. I feel this way right now...I have success, a loving family, opposite sex, and even a guitar :) The only thing missing is happiness with myself. And although everyone else around me may think that I have it made, I'm not satisfied. Many times, I believe, an ambitious person reaches a plateau after attaining a goal, and sinks into a depression before focusing on the next goal. I think Mayer thinks the same thing--he's reached his dream of money, women to choose from, popularity, and a sense of personal achievement, but now what? It's a lot of pressure. |

| John is expressing sadness in this song, and disappointment about who he is. He's also expressing that, no matter what, he knows that he won't change. He has accepted who he is at this stage in his life--an overanalyst and a more profound thinker than those around him. Although he's comfortable with who he is, there are times when he wishes he was oblivious to life's more important questions, like the rest of the ignorami out there...and just have a good time. | |
