Alice in Chains – Dam That River Lyrics 11 years ago
Just cause Jerry wrote the song doesn't mean Layne didn't write the lyrics. Actually, it'd be pretty weird if he DIDN'T write the lyrics, since he'd have to sing the damn song all the time. Layne only wrote a few songs, but they were good. He has been acknowledged as having written most of the lyrics for the band. So I don't know where this story "Jerry wrote the song" has anything to do with the lyrics!

The Beatles – Nowhere Man Lyrics 13 years ago
The Nowhere Man is a lot like the Fool On The Hill. He is making all of these plans for no one, has no opinion or point of view, but that is what makes him free. It is what separates him from everyone, and at the same time, makes him like everyone else. The fact that Nowhere Man can be anyone is what makes the song take on a dynamic property in the story-telling of the song. The listener thinks this guy is a loser, but John is basically saying that because the Nowhere Man has cleared his head, he can become anyone. He is truly free. John revisits the theme of melancholy so many times in his songs, and later in his solo work. The same theme of Nowhere Man can be heard in the Free As A Bird demo. You can almost hear the sadness in the chords. But listen carefully to the VOX chimes, the purity of the singing, and the vibrancy of the band as a whole. In this moment, they are redefining the history of rock and roll forever. Right on this recording. The Beatles, musically, spiritually, and culturally, transcend the barriers of pop and rock music with this song. After this, every single album they make doesn't become exponentially better, it exponentially changes the landscape of pop, rock, country, and r&b music forever. They are basically letting go of the "silly love songs" that confined them. Here is where The Beatles go from being pop-friendly young kids ala ("A Hard Day's Night") to the four greatest revolutionary artists of the 20th century. Music changes after this song. After the break-up in 1969, there are movements in rock and roll that involve desperately trying to imitate this band's sound and desperately trying to repudiate them (punk rock, etc). Following this song, countless bands emerge where their entire record sounds like *this one song*. The Beatles basically drop an atomic bomb on music with the release of Rubber Soul.

John Lennon – Well, Well, Well Lyrics 13 years ago
Re: SpongeBunny

"In his lengthy 1970 interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Lennon denied that the screams in Well Well Well were connected with Janov's therapy.

Listen to Twist And Shout. I couldn't sing the damn thing, I was just screaming. Listen to 'A-wop-bop-a-loo-wop-a-wop-bam-boom'. Don't get the therapy confused with the music.
John Lennon, 1970"

Stone Temple Pilots – Big Bang Baby Lyrics 13 years ago
Scott dissed Layne on 92.3 KROCK back several years ago when asked about heroin claiming "compared to Layne he still had all his teeth". Its something only New Yorkers listening in at the time would remember, but I was seriously disappointed by this comment. I can't remember if it was before or after Layne died but it was messed up.

The original lyrics were "I'm on codeine and demerol" or something like that but he changed the lyrics since the media was already attacking him about drug use

System of a Down – B.Y.O.B. Lyrics 19 years ago
Replying to this:
"Have you heard any other songs on the radio lately that actually promt this type of discussion? Very few bands actually sing about anything other than screwing chicks, getting high, falling in love, and getting your heart broken. I think it's refreshing to have a band that tackles "more difficult" material (like politics)"

Heh, I have tried to keep out of this discussion, basically because I have known it would go nowhere. and its been pretty fascinating to read everyones opinion on here. I mean everyone has a different opinion and they all have a right to express it. But what you say has a validity to it that can't really be disputed.

Just like people have different tastes and interpetation of music, so are people going to have varying interpetation and opinions of politics. I like System because, as you say, you may not agree with them, but atleast they are putting on amazing shows, making great music, and using music as an artform and a way to express their beliefs and soul. Its obvious their political viewpoints, especially with Serj's family history, are extremely important to them. I do respect them for that and for sticking to their guns, no matter how my personal views or political views may change, they deserve that respect. On the other hand, everybody here is an adult or nearly an adult, and definately has a mind of their own. I hope you are all capable of appreciating music even if you do not agree with it.

If not there's always Hank Williams Jr ... jk

Breaking Benjamin – Natural Life Lyrics 19 years ago
I find this to be one of my favorite Breaking Benjamin songs. I think that this song says alot about how people interpet what their lives are supposed to be. Look at how society can judge someone who doesn't fit into the mold, or follow along the same old lines. Where would this band be if they followed by those rules? To me this song is all about being against conformity, atleast thats my interpetation.

Nirvana – You Know You're Right Lyrics 19 years ago
This is not one of the bands best songs. If they had gone on to release another album this probably wouldnt have been a single if you ask me. This song is kinda like saying, "No, really. I'm outta here".

Also, this song wouldve been recorded differently. I also dont think they wouldve used this take. I also think that the reason some people may be annoyed by the repitition at the end is also because its been highly protooled and there is alot of production put into making this song fit into a radio-friendly format. something which has a certain irony if you ask me, given the band's position on things like that.

But given all these factors, the depression, the personal problems, the fact it was done in 94, the editing done, I still think its a pretty good song.

Pearl Jam – Given to Fly Lyrics 19 years ago
This songs seem to be about anyone who has been put down but prevailed. The mention of water and flying could be considered symbols of drowning, time, and liberation. Thats just my take on it. Someone could shoot me down and say I'm wrong. Maybe to Eddie it is a song about himself or someone he knew. I find it quite inspirational, especially the "well fuckers he still stands" part.. hehehe

This song has no meaning. The lyrics were written by a perverted fat record label executive. And so much engineering was done on the vocals you could even argue its not really her voice singing either...

Nirvana – Rape Me Lyrics 19 years ago
this song is totally about being raped by the tabloids and media. if you were a fan of nirvana back in 93 then you might know what this song is all about. "my favorite inside source" line was directed at lynn hirschberg of vanity fair who claimed courtney did heroin. in the article she stated the tip was from "an inside source". even though kurt always said it was an anti-rape song, nobody got it.. its about being mentally raped by ppl

Pearl Jam – Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town Lyrics 19 years ago
also thats whats so ironic about the song.. because nobody knows what its about. it means anything you want to.. same with the music. If ou really look at the lyrics its really hinted right in there. The elderly woman is just a symbol for what that music has become.. some relic of the past "small time predicts my fate.." (peoples tastes change so quickly)..etcetcetc hes talking about himself and his place in all of that

Pearl Jam – Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town Lyrics 19 years ago
I really believe that this song is about the death of the Seattle music scene. Its all about how people forgot or never knew what it was about.. its like looking back at the past.. "It's hard when you're stuck upon the shelf" "I changed by not changing at all" etc.. this is what its about.. looking at the past and trying to remember whats been lost. All of this stuff about it really being an elderly woman is way too literal
