I think this song is about religious people who try to tell non-believers that they are going to burn in Hell if they don't accept Jesus. He's saying that you can't get them to see your point of view, so all you can do is wish them well and go on about your life. The lyrics are vague enough that they could apply to any situation in which one person or group is so strident in their position that they can't be bothered to consider alternative viewpoints. However, the religious references (spirits, the devil, judgment/mercy, hell, and demons) make me think he's referring to religious people, particularly fundamentalist Christians. |

However, a few years ago, one found a good woman, got a steady job, sobered up, and started a family. The other continued to party, wrecked his car, lost his job, and had his house foreclosed on. Both would tell you they are trying to stay on the righteous path, but only one has been successful in doing so. Each could easily have ended up going down the path that the other took. The one who became successful need only to make one of his old mistakes (a night of heavy drinking/drug use or having an affair) to throw it all away. This song reminds me of two of my friends, Rob and Mike. Both were wild in high school and college (drunk every weekend, smoking pot, lots of sex, road trips to Mardis Gras, etc.). Rob found a girl, got married, had kids, got a good job, built a house in the suburbs, quit smoking, cut way back on drinking. He goes to church with the family every Sunday, but will confide in his close friends that he doesn't really get anything out of it. Mike kept doing drugs, can't hold down a job, never got married. If you ask him, he'd tell you he's trying to get his life together ("trying to stay focused on the righteous path"), but he keeps relapsing into his old habits. They have very similar personalities, but Rob found a way to control his impulses, while Mike didn't. Occasionally, Rob will have too much to drink and the old Rob will show up. I think that is the "thin, thin line" separating their two minds. |

My relationship to my father is very much the same. We don't fight or have any big disagreements, but we aren't really close. Like your father, he is a good, hard working man. There are different definitons of "sin". Some definite it as "transgression of divine law". I believe this is the most common way of defining it and it was the way I was using it. Others, such as yourself, use the term in a more broad scope to include violations of any moral principle, regardless of the origin. Many Christians feel that moral rules ONLY come from God. I don't follow any gods, unless you have a very different definition of what a god is than I do. As for the Bible, I have no doubt that many (perhaps even most) of the characters and places actually existed and events actually occurred. However, there are many problems with the Bible as a historical document, especially any claims regarding Jesus. First, there are no contemporary accounts of Jesus from any eyewitnesses. Secondly, the gospel accounts were all written after the purported time of Jesus and were based on hearsay. You said "If you read the newspaper do you believe in what was written?". Well, that depends on what kind of claim is being made. If the paper says there was a wreck on the interstate yesterday, I will believe it. Car accidents happen all the time and I have no reason to believe the writer would make up that story. If the paper says a man saw a UFO yesterday (with no corroborating evidence), I would not believe it. Why? Because extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. Your example of the human body exchanging oxygen and carbon dioxide is flawed. We can use instruments to verify this is occuring. We can conduct experiments to test that this is occuring and these tests are repeatable. Supernatural claims cannot be tested and the results cannot be repeated by others. I agree that what you are taught doesn't make it right or wrong and that we have to decide whether to accept what we've been taught. However, as a child, because of our lack of experience and because our critical thinking skills are not fully developed, we are more susceptible to believing what we are told (especially when coming from authority figures like parents or preachers). When those beliefs are reinforced by friends and family for many years, it can be hard to step back and examine our beliefs with a critical perspective. You said "Do you realize the ultimate goal isnt a life of ease or riches or fame or anything. It was just to be a friend to your creator." I find this to be arrogant and condescending. You seem to think you have a truth that I am missing. A Muslim or Hindu might tell you that they have the truth and if you believe like they do, then you will see it. Would you agree with them? Does it seem odd to me that the hurricanes have hit most of the areas on the Gulf coast in the last 10 years? No, it doesn't. There were a lot of strong hurricanes from the late 1940s to the mid 1960s. I'm sure people at that time thought it was the end times too. Does it seem odd to you that we haven't had a major earthquake in the midwest United States since 1812? You are assuming there is a purpose behind the hurricanes hitting the gulf coast, when there is no reason to believe that is the case. How many hurricanes have hit major cities on the Atlantic Coast the last 10 years? As for Bible prophecy, there are two problems. Much of the claims of prophecy are actually very vague. It is like Nostradamus' prophecies...they can be applied to many events after the fact. If it was a true prophecy, you should be able to say what is going to happen BEFORE it happens. The prophecies that "came true" in the Bible can not be relied upon unless there is direct evidence that the prophecies were made before the event occurred and also evidence that the event actually occurred. Prophecies in the Old Testament that are fullfilled in the New Testament could have been false. Anyone can write a book saying that prophecies described in a previous book have been fulfilled. If there were prophecies written into the first book of Lord of the Rings, the fact that these prophecies are fulfilled in the second and third books doesn't mean that the story is actually true. Now, all of this doesn't mean there isn't a God and that the Bible isn't true, but in my opinion, it is cause to be skeptical. I choose not to believe. You can tell me that all I have to do is pray to God with an open heart and I will see the light. You can tell me that I better be right. As Neil said, I don't have faith in faith and I don't believe in belief. I don't for a second think that there will be anything after death. I'm not scared of death. However, we only get one chance at life and I want to enjoy it and experience as much as I can. It may not mean anything after I'm gone, but it means something to me now. |

No matter what religion you believe, there are more that disagree with you than think you are correct. I'm an atheist-leaning agnostic. I don't believe that there is God, but I am not 100% certain. I'm not 100% certain that bigfoot doesn't exist either. However, without reliable evidence, I won't believe in either. Let's say that when you were growing up, your parents told you that God gave a man named Jack some magic beans and a giant beanstalk grew and Jack climbed the beanstalk to Heaven and stole a golden egg. Let's also say your parents told you a "fairy tale" about Noah and the ark. Wouldn't you believe the story of Jack and the gaint beanstalk was true and the story of Noah's ark was fiction? |

I can't believe more people haven't commented on this song. I love the guitar work on it. As coconut said, Ozzy is looking back on his life and the mistakes he's made. He still finds life a mystery...still looking for "the meaning of life". In the second verse ("the wreckage of my past keeps haunting me"), he can't let go of his past. His alcoholism, drug abuse, and depression still haunt him...he can't forgive himself and move on with his life...he hasn't learned to "live for today and not tomorrow". Despite that, he decides life has been worth the ride and he would do it all again if he had the choice. In other words, he isn't saying "I wish I had never been born". As for the 'road to nowhere' part, I think he's saying he's trapped by his old habits...he isn't making any progress because his past keeps coming back to haunt him. It's like Pink Floyd's "The Wall", he's building a psychological wall around himself. At the end, he finally tears down the wall and decides the depression will pass. I think his marriage was on the rocks and he ultimately realized he had to get better or he was going to lose Sharon. Again, similar in theme to "The Wall" and also to the Beatles' song "Nowhere Man". |

I agree with the suicide interpretation...especially when you consider the last stanza. "No more struggle, no more energy" "It's all too crazy and I'm not sticking 'round". Obviously, he plans to end it all. The first stanza is saying that he has isolated himself from the world (similar to the theme of Pink Floyd's "The Wall"). The second stanza could refer to drug use, but I think amw's interpretation is probably correct. I accidently stumbled upon this song while looking for the Beatles song of the same title. I think this song is sad and yet beautiful. |
