TV on the Radio – Blues From Down Here Lyrics 17 years ago
i believe the meaning of the song is strongly religious, although i do not believe the singer intends to simply state an opinion of the variety proposed by sstennett. rather, i believe he intends to convey a complex point of view, perhaps his own.

to begin with, the very first line "from the depths, i call you", google explains, is from the beginning of psalm 130. however, the song replaces "lord" with "ma", introducing a metaphor used in the second line to convey the desirable comfort found in religion. however, as he soon explains, his heart was enlarged and then left disabled, basically stating that he was doing fine by himself, then he developed an intense desire to be close to God, but he is left wanting, leaving him now feeling disabled.

"teeth gnashing" is another strong biblical reference, as that phrase is always used in connection to those who are not granted salvation ("wailing and gnashing of teeth", specifically). he spends several verses explaining how feels protected by the lord, for which he is thankful, but in the end, he thinks he is among the damned masses. i believe this is where the title fits in: he feels distanced from God, and he's singin' the blues.

however, this isn't because he's chosen to separate himself, he is trying his hardest to achieve the comfort "so warm and fabled". the lines "hear that supplication (prayer) echo through the void, been received by noone" and "Now I'm waiting for an answer patiently" demonstrate that he's trying, but not getting anything back.

then there is the part everyone else has been picking up on, starting with "pull the pin, drop it in" and ending with "just stay on your knees". i agree that this is about traditional organized religion, but not so much that he thinks its all crap, but that he can't accept their simplicity of thought. it sounds like he feels deeply compelled not to take religion as an axiomatic basis, even though doing so would provide him simple comfort. he mocks this childish faith ("faith like a child", also another biblical reference) with the "time for your favorite story..." line.

finally, the last line of the song wraps it all up: he's not particularly pleased and really wishes he could just have a simple blind-faith relationship with the lord like so many people he sees, but he can't. so he's expressing his frustration, to the Lord, but maintaining that he's not going to give up. "it's not the last you've heard from me".

... or at least thats how i read it :)

I really enjoy all the parts of the song (especially that bit of trumpet they throw in) EXCEPT the "hump de bump" part... which is odd.

Tool – 10,000 Days (Wings Pt. 2) Lyrics 18 years ago
looking at all the above comments on the song's meaning (trying to filter out the flames), i mostly agree. as others have stated, i think the big emphasis is about how much he loved his mom, and how he wholeheartedly believes that she deserves a place in heaven for her work on earth.

however, the last couple of lines have something extra. throughout the song, i was a bit surprised hearing him praise his mom's faith, expecting, but not finding, a hint of animosity towards her religion or God. to be sure there is some condescension towards the other believers, but none directed at his mom's faith. furthermore, he says "we", not "they" when referring to the other believers, lumping himself with the others. initially, i thought this was just him, out of respect, not bringing up his beef with religion that hes expressed in previous songs, but the second to last lines made me reconsider.

what does he mean when he says "But surely saved one, hallelujah." from the preceeding lines we can tell he's speaking from his mom's point of view when he says this. "saved", from the point of view of an evangelizer means "converted to my religion". and i'm guessing the "one" refers to maynard. so put together it would imply hes saying "you saved me mom". not that he flipped 180 into a card-carrying sunday church-goer, but perhaps his opinions were significantly changed from what we've seen expressed in previous songs.

what do you think? everyone seems to have a huge amount of tool knowledge, which i don't, so i'm interested to hear.

"apothnesko, you are a cunt. "
ah, good start. this should be a level-headed, well thought out post...

"texas has the highest teen pregnancy rate in the country (by a landslide)"
except that they don't, (number 5, Alan Guttmacher Institute Feb 19,2004). landslide?
credibility dropping

"... resulting in potentially lethal infections"
"overflow orphanages and let children grow up....."
how utilitarian. can i kill you if 10 people will live by using your organs? murder is illegal. therefore the issue to debate is whether abortion is murder, not whether abortion will help us all out.

"fuck pod for raking in millions of dollars for this song"
that sounds pretty unbelievable, seeing as the song -isn't on an album-. credibility dropping.

try and put a little thought into your posts. colorful language is no substitute .

from one post up:
"...u do what you need to do for YOU durning your time here on earth.."

rationalize:
3. To devise self-satisfying but incorrect reasons for (one's behavior) [dictionary.com]

i guess i'll be "imposing my views on you" if i make any attempt to argue any of those points. yes, we are all certainly capable and encouraged to choose what we believe in, but don't use that as a facade for believing in something that requires the least possible amount of personal effort.

I think its focused on being mature enough to take a step back and instead of hating a situation you screwed up, saying "yeah, that was stupid", learning from it, and then letting it stop being a sore spot. This is mostly from the chorus

Cannibal Corpse – A Skull Full Of Maggots Lyrics 19 years ago
being new to songmeanings, i saw a link to a cannibal corpose thread in the "most recent post".

at first i thought this was an isolated rather humerous thread, but there are like 10 different threads of you guys (quiffporn, DarKouto). very funny.

i'd just like to make the AFAICT unobserved observation that DarKouto is just trolling. I don't think its possible for someone to be that dim in real life.

Whats funny is that these threads make me really want to hear cannibal corpose...

Of course there are a lot of dumb comments, but check out SilentCry's, just a little above (11-28-2004 @ 05:51:21 PM ):

"what do THEY know about abortion and stuff."
--> You're right, I bet they've never even had one!

"I think they should keep their FUCKED up opinion and religion to themselves !! >:( ! "
--> Yeah, how dare they write a song that you _are not being forced to listen to_.

"I think it's wrong to tell people what to do . *pissed off* "
--> Hey SilentCry, don't do drugs. Ohh... wait.. I'm sorry... that was wrong of me.

well, i had to rip into *someone*...

_ANARCHIST_: everyone is being sarcastic. nobody likes the lyrics.

Except Darkouto, who doesn't seem to understand this complex world of non-expletives around him. (Its ok, hes probably 14, so lots of time to grow into a productive member of society)

However, in CC's defense: you can't make out any words actually listening to standard death metal. Death metal treats the vocalist not as source of lyrics but almost as a musical instrument that adds to the macabre mood of the song. Or thats what I suppose good death metal does. I can't really say I like CC. In Flames: melodic death metal

rereading mikalcarbine257's post, i would replace my "and possibly other religions..." with "and certainly other religions"

Mudvayne – Mercy, Severity Lyrics 19 years ago
Here's my take. I don't have quite the Mudvayne background, but this and Shadow of a Man are my favorites on this album.

I think the song is talking about being rescued from a dark world. In the beginning the world was good, and then turned evil ("We've come here, from so far away"). People in the world have to deal with this massive evil influence ("This dark womb [the world],
Wraps and covets me...")

Several lines of the lyrics are from the point of view of an outside greater power offering to take people to a better place. ("I can save you, If you leave it all behind ") Notice that "if you leave it all behind" means that it is not easy to give up the evil. Likewise: "Would you take a trip with me On the back of a star".

The last chunk of the lyrics are from the point of view of a a person in the world:
"Mother of creation wait, Embrace the souls Of a lost world [us] Carry them away," is the speaker asking to be saved and not left behind.
"Pour firmament between our waters. Seperate the space " asks to put the heavens between the speaker and the evil world, to be seperated.

If its not terribly obvious, this interpretation lends itself to a strong Christian theme.(and possibly other religions with concepts of salvation, i'm not a scholar)

"Mother of destruction wait with a belt of Skulls strap" would refer to the 'Angel of Death' dealing the severe justice to the evil world.

Thus, given the "Mother of Creation" which could save you [mercy], and "Mother of Destruction" who deals just punishment [severity], the song seems to fit.

That or I'm full of crap. Thoughts?

Frou Frou – Let Go Lyrics 19 years ago
I like to think of the song in the more specific context of a relationship, rather than life in general:
You have someone holding back, not wanting to commit, and specifically scared of the possible pain in store. This is a defense mechanism (bubble-wrap), probably based on previous experience. Thats where the most beautiful lyric ("cause there's beauty in the breakdown") fits in: you break down these barriers or defenses, and give love a chance. Thats the beauty.

Further encouraging, "it gains the more it gives" I felt referred to the old "it is better to give than recieve" saying, rather than in part of an evils-of-television metaphor.

Finally, [with a nerdy grin], I'd like to point out the scientific relevance of "there's beauty in the breakdown". Energy, fire, explosions, etc are produced by breaking chemical and nuclear bonds. Intended metaphor?...
