He's not building anything; that's the point of the song. Tom Waits is singing from the point of view of a representative of the paranoid townspeople who view this man with suspicion simply because he seems to be up to something. There is of course no proof for anything he might be up to as it's all in the heads of those around him, and the narration reveals the obsessive and invasive mindset of the suspicious townspeople rather than concentrating on the man who is supposedly building something. |

The part of this song that sticks with me the most is when she shouts "Everybody!" and it just becomes so apparent how lonely she is when there's nobody else there to sing. It's a really poignant twist I think. |

The line "Keep me free from burden" should actually read "Keep me free from birth", and "My love" should be "My Lord." He's singing about wanting to be free from the sufferings of the physical world, ie free from reincarnation, and to be close to God. He's asking God to help him break free from the trappings and burdens of this world and to transcend into the next. |

I think this song is about someone who has led a long life, and is getting ready to die and saying a last goodbye to the one person (the last singing bird) who has stayed the whole time. He\'s wants to be buried by the river, the only constant thing where \'lovers come and go\' but where his loved one can come and see the willow that he planted as a remembrance and hear the sound of the river that also gives him peace in the afterlife. One of the most achingly sweet and beautiful songs ever written. |

this song seems to be about the singer reflecting on a brief and kind of awkward romance between him and someone he may not really have been into but it's a fond memory he has nonetheless. |
