I actually think the line is 'this is where we are, at least', which has a wonderful lack of resolution to it.

I get the impression that the equinox represents half way, as the next line says, and that those two images aren't related.

Bloc Party – Two More Years Lyrics 14 years ago
It's incredible that I wrote this nearly four years ago now. I've grown and changed so much since. I left another comment on the next page of this thread back in 2007 giving everybody an update, but I've still been receiving emails so another one is probably due!

The truth is that I still haven't met my friend in Minnesota. I've been with someone else here in England for nearly a year now; that relationship is also long distance but a few hundred miles seems nothing in comparison to a few thousand. My friend and I are as strong as ever and will definitely meet someday soon, probably within the next year or two.

Of course those are only plans, and I'm very satisfied in my current relationship, but the comments I've been making here have taught me that plans don't always work out! For now, I'm just trying to tackle life day by day, especially at the moment with my degree. The future is unknown until it becomes the present. I'm excited to see what will happen.

Fall Out Boy – I Don't Care Lyrics 15 years ago
I've never actually heard this song, but the chorus is very similar to 'I don't care what you think unless it is about me', which is a line from Drain You from Nirvana's Nevermind album. Something tells me that it isn't an intentional reference on FOB's part. I guess it could be.

Coldplay – Violet Hill Lyrics 16 years ago
Actually, thinking about it... Coldplay were my preferred band for just a few months after that. They were there for me during that difficult time, after all, so maybe I'm just being over-critical. They're still much better than most. :)

Coldplay – Violet Hill Lyrics 16 years ago
One of the main niggles I have had with Coldplay for the past couple of years has not been the style of their music, which I rate extremely highly, but the often simplistic and repetitive nature of Chris Martin's lyrics, especially on X&Y - the melodies are memorable but the wordplay, on the whole, I find to be lacking a certain spark and that, for me, makes it difficult to form a prolonged emotional connection with them.

Personally however, listening to this song, I'm optimistic for what's to come. I haven't appreciated a Coldplay song this much since I listened to Fix You on the way home from the hospital on the morning my grandfather died three years ago. That was catharsis that hasn't been paralleled since, which is probably for the best.

The second half of this song is probably one of the most intense musical experiences I have ever encountered. Most of the others are from Radiohead songs as well.

Death Cab for Cutie – I Will Possess Your Heart Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is about being utterly obsessed with someone to the point where you refuse the idea of the love not being reciprocated, a situation I'm sure all of us have been in at least once.

There are some dark ambiguities beneath the repetitive lyrics and catchy melody... We need to remember that. The rest of the story is up to us. I've only been listening to this for the past half an hour and it's already one of my DCFC favourites.

Narrow Stairs will be so worth the wait. :)

Bloc Party – Two More Years Lyrics 16 years ago
The consequences of the comment I left here two years ago are quite astounding. A couple of people have contacted me or left responses here over the past few months, now that the time has progressed (it went very fast!), wondering how things have gone, so... I guess I don't want to let anybody's curiosity linger, however much it may burst the appeal by knowing what has happened.

The relationship with my friend had ended about six months prior to me making that comment, and she started dating someone else, but I was still entirely blown over by her and even now continue to be to some extent. I didn't end up visiting her this year as I initially hoped (planning your life for two years is obviously extremely difficult, and there's been a lot of personal develoment since then), but we are still extremely close friends and I'm currently saving up the money to spend some time with her next summer, among other friends I've made across the pond since 2005. When that happens, the relationship could work out. I think we're both kind of hopeful it will! On the other hand, it may not, and that's OK too. Whatever happens, I'll figure it out and get back to you. :)

I'm happy that I've made some of you wonder a little!

Death Cab for Cutie – Transatlanticism Lyrics 16 years ago
I could say such an incredible amount about this song, but I'm going to try and keep it simple and tell everyone that Transatlanticism is actually my lifeforce.

I love someone so much that it hurts sometimes and I don't honestly think that I would have it any differently. They know perfectly well who they are, and at this moment in time I'm unsure if that is ever going to change... unsure about anything that is going to happen for that matter. This song encapsulates every emotion I could feel about the future - doubt and insecurity, yes, but also this inexorable, unbelievable hope that flows through every action I make. It makes me joyful to simply be living, and that is the most powerful object of all. When I die, hopefully many years from now, I want it played at my funeral.

I apologise for being so effusive but this is something that I desperately needed to say, and now, no more.

Dashboard Confessional – The Rush Lyrics 16 years ago
I've noticed that on a lot of Poison Trees Chris has gone for simplicity. We listeners are those asking for 'something unforgettable', and I'm just worried that however effectively concise some songs like this one may be, this makes them less immediately memorable than Screaming Infidelities or Hands Down for example where they've got this distinctive feel to them. On examination, the new album's a little hit and miss... Either that or I'm just growing up.

Brand New – Millstone Lyrics 16 years ago
I firmly believe that the chorus says 'A millstone around my neck'. Where would the title come from otherwise, even if the two phrases do sound similar? We all know that the official lyrics are slightly inaccurate at times.

When I first listened to The Devil and God, after this track was finished I knew we were onto a winner. The first six tracks of this album are absolute killers.

Rilo Kiley – Smoke Detector Lyrics 16 years ago
There's something sweetly sinister about the 'I was smoking him in bed.' It's a cute pun as well.

To me, this carries on the theme from 15 about underage sex, this time in the club scene. You could see the 'smoke detector' as being someone who bums off other people's cigarettes, but as the saying goes, 'there's no smoke without fire', and therefore the chorus is a playful warning to watch out for the peril you can't see.

The Good Life – Inmates Lyrics 17 years ago
It's been suggested before that I am one of these boys, as admittedly I am the type to perhaps fall too fast for people. I never intentionally hurt people or tamper with their heads though.

Anyway, this is one of my favourite stand-alone songs of all time. The progression it makes over the nine minutes to the climax is incredible.

'I can't be your prisoner; I won't.'

Death Cab for Cutie – Title and Registration Lyrics 17 years ago
This is the main song I listen to when I'm feeling disappointed about losing someone, which seems to be quite often. Inversely, it's also a song I listen to if I want a good singalong. Everything's related to my mood.

This is a public outcry.

Jenny Lewis – Handle with Care (Traveling Wilburys cover) Lyrics 17 years ago
As best I can guess (for each paragraph):

Lewis
Lewis/Gibbard
Gibbard
Ward
Lewis
Lewis/Gibbard
Gibbard
Oberst/Gibbard
Oberst

Obviously, a lot of them are in the background, so I'm only really counting the main singers in each verse unless they're sharing the majority of it.

Ben Gibbard just steals all of it! His voice is so distinctive and Matt Ward couldn't go as high as he does in the background behind the other people.

Jenny Lewis – The Charging Sky Lyrics 17 years ago
This is probably my favourite song from the album, or at least in the top three. When I saw her live, she changed 'Atlanta streets' into 'Manchester streets', which was kind of nice. I guess it doesn't matter where the place is, seeing as Atlanta and Orlando are mentioned, the point is that it could be happening anywhere.

I love this because of the quirky guitar riffs.

Bright Eyes – Ship in a Bottle Lyrics 17 years ago
Digital Ash is such a misunderstoood album in my opinion, panned by critics as not being 'as good' musically or artistically as IWAIM when the two are completely different concepts and shouldn't be compared with each other, even though they are by the same artist. This song kind of summarises that. The crying baby in this song is genius, to be honest, how first it gets opposed to the trumpet over the drums, then swirled around like it's going down a plughole and then builds back up again. Classic.

Statistics – Hours Seemed Like Days Lyrics 17 years ago
This song's one of the best Statistics songs to me. It's being nostalgic about past experiences, perhaps old summers that lasted forever or ex-lovers, through remembering the development of popular technology, which is probably the most defining part of the 80s and 90s, the decades Denver would have grown up and had his adolescence in.

'Let's go back in time... let's just press rewind' says it all really. Don't we all want to do that sometimes, and relive our younger years over and over again?

The idea behind the lyrics is very simple, and normally I'm not a fan of songs like that, but there's something overwhelmingly individual about this one, and all of Denver's other songs, where he's picking up on the seemingly random situations we all face personally and taking an in-depth look at them. Rather than making a sweeping generalisation about a large concept, he takes a snapshot of something little and defines it completely.

But our emotions are never completely possible to define.

Refreshingly simple and incredibly beautiful. :)

Death Cab for Cutie – Photobooth Lyrics 17 years ago
This song just sums up all the summer romances of our young lives. To me, this is the ultimate summer song, like the one you'd listen to when the sun's going down and you're out driving with your friends or something.

Definitely one of my favourite Death Cab songs (if I had to choose them).

Death Cab for Cutie – Company Calls Epilogue Lyrics 18 years ago
I just think this song is about someone whose true love is marrying another person, and since their engagement, they're helpless to do anything else except simply watch them slip away: 'You were the one, but I can't spit it out when the date's been set.'

The narrator believes that they should be the one marrying their love, not the other person: 'The white routine to be ingested inaccurately.'

The song indeed has a sedated, slow and clumsy feel to it. I think that's because of the narrator drinking away their sorrow at the wedding with the 'free drinks', 'crashing through the parlour doors', etcetera.

I'm not exactly sure how this ties in with Company Calls, but both songs are definitely highlights of We Have The Facts... to me.

Muse – Supermassive Black Hole Lyrics 18 years ago
I agree the song isn't very complex by itself, but in terms of an album it could be a key part.

Black Holes and Revelations is definitely going to be an album with a story or a point, along with the rest of Muse's albums, compared to just a collection of songs like the majority of the popular artists put out. And that's the difference.

Muse – Supermassive Black Hole Lyrics 18 years ago
I had to post the lyrics as soon as I got hold of it. I can't wait for Black Holes and Revelations to come out!

This song is so different for Muse. Personally, I think it's the catchiest and most pop-like song they've done, surpassing TIRO, along with probably the most danceworthy, but in no way is it the best.

It'll do though. :)

Lifted is definitely an album you cannot listen to in gaps. To understand it properly, you need to listen to it all the way through from start to finish.

Despite it lasting about an hour and fifteen minutes, and I normally get bored with an album after about 40, I have never ever got bored of Lifted. Whenever I'm in the mood for Lifted, I'm always in the mood for listening to it all the way through.

It's just such an amazing album.

I corrected the lyrics while listening to the finished version of this song on The Early November's MySpace. It's definitely as correct as we're going to get it. It's definitely 'Decoration' not 'Decorations'.

And I've gone back on how I felt about this song last year. After hearing TEN play it live and hearing the new finished version (or at least one of them), I can say I prefer this to Five Years.

I can't wait for the new triple album to come out in a couple of months.

Death Cab for Cutie – We Looked Like Giants Lyrics 18 years ago
When I went to see them, this song was probably the main highlight.

It was just such an epic, especially when during the interlude, the second drum kit got set up and Ben jammed with Jason while Nick and Chris just improvised.

It was just so so amazing. I forgot where I was and I got lost and confused in the feeling of it all.

I want to see Death Cab live again so badly. They are the best live band I've ever witnessed.

Death Cab for Cutie – Brothers on a Hotel Bed Lyrics 18 years ago
The album notes say that both Ben Gibbard and Chris Walla wrote this song, and Ben wrote the lyrics, so I'm taking those to be correct.

Ben Gibbard has a hand in every single Death Cab song, probably because he has to add the vocals.

And I have learned
That even landlocked lovers yearn
For the sea like navy men
Cause now we say goodnight
From our own seperate sides
Like brothers on a hotel bed

It may just be my own personal experience showing through, but I think this line is about the same thing as Transatlanticism. Ben's home is in the States while he has a love in the UK or Europe somewhere.

They're saying goodnight from their own separate sides of the Atlantic Ocean. The metaphor of the brothers on a hotel bed is well thought out and powerful.

This is one of my favourite songs on the album, alongside Crooked Teeth, What Sarah Said and Different Names For The Same Thing. Crooked Teeth reminds me most of the old Death Cab; it has that edgy, impatient feel to it.

Plans is definitely a change from Death Cab's other albums, kind of like their X+Y, more mature, patient and reflective... Everything's more simple, lyrically and musically compared to Transatlanticism. It's a very love-concentrated album, very personal to Ben, yet the messages in the songs are able to reach more people because of this, which is why Death Cab have become popular.

It's a great album nonetheless. :)

Bright Eyes – Neely O'Hara Lyrics 18 years ago
The title's obviously to do with the character from Valley of The Dolls, because that's the comparison. We all know most of Conor's songs are fictional and based around scenarios he invents in his head, like all good poets can, so we'll never know who this song is about.

Set your sights!

Death Cab for Cutie – Stable Song Lyrics 18 years ago
Which version of Stability I prefer depends on my mood really. If it's late and I'm in a quiet We Have The Facts mood, I'll turn on the original and let the entire 12 minutes wash over me. It's minimalist, it's sleepy and it's soothing.

If I'm in the bigger mood for an epic singalong, I'll put on Stable Song with the guitar and the full band effect at the end.

They both work. :)

Jenny Lewis – Handle with Care (Traveling Wilburys cover) Lyrics 18 years ago
Conor doesn't sing the "Everybody, needs somebody to lean on,
Put your body next to mine and dream on." part, does he? It doesn't sound like him to me. I thought that was M Ward. The voice is too deep/weird.

He definitely sings the

'I've been uptight and made a mess.
I'd clean it up myself I guess.
Oh the sweet smell of success.
Handle me with care.'

bit. Even then I had to double check that was him. Everyone sounds a lot more country on this record than with their respective bands.
