Idlewild – Welcome Home Lyrics 15 years ago
Along with many Idlewild lyrics this leaves me slightly confused as to the real 'meaning' of the song - esoteric_rubbish's theories sound as good as any as I've heard, but either way this is a great song!

Ash – Low Ebb Lyrics 15 years ago
I have to disagree with shakermaker123, for me this is mostly about depression and clinging onto life, if only just. Everything's drawing in and seemingly heading towards an inevitable conclusion, although at the particular moment the person is still alive with 'pulsing in his veins', as if trying to hold on against the 'call from beyond the grave'.

There's not many songs I can think of that have had the ability to bring me close to tears, but this is one of them.

Thom Yorke – Harrowdown Hill Lyrics 17 years ago
Yeah it was pretty big news over here. After having "blown the whistle", he was really ostracised by both the government and the BBC too, who were just happy to have got their story. All in all he was just really badly treated, and whether he was assassinated or actually was driven to suicide it all amounted to the same thing. So a few days later the Hutton report was published and as expected nothing was held against the government, who were let off at the expense of this human life. Which is really sad. As is this great song.

I agree. A truly amazing song.

Editors – Let Your Good Heart Lead You Home Lyrics 17 years ago
A really lovely song this one, obviously about someone near going through a hard time and worrying about them.
Surprised I'm the first to comment on it!

I agree with you all, a really quite sad song but quite comforting at the same time. The ultimate break-up song.

Bloc Party – Vision of Heaven Lyrics 17 years ago
I love this song, one of my favourite of Bloc Party's new songs.

Seems to be about wanting to escape from society and everyone just to find some peace for himself. The bit about throwing the mobile phone into the sea and leaving his white converse in the sand illustrates the detachment from modern society and from being contacted by anyone in an age when pretty much everyone has mobile phone on them all the time.

Great lyrics and a great tune.

Bloc Party – Atonement Lyrics 17 years ago
Yeah I agree with eoin, the song's about trying to patch up a relationship with someone and trying to pursuade them that it's worth it. The lines "My kisses will put out/The forest fire I started" indicate the that they'd obviously compromised the relationship at some point but want to make up for it.

New Order – Dream Attack Lyrics 18 years ago
Pretty obvious what the song's about - not wanting someone you love to leave, and trying to convince them to stay. But it's a really amazing song.

New Order – Turn Lyrics 18 years ago
I can't believe nobody had even submitted the lyrics of this, let alone commented. I love this song so much, definately my favourite on "Waiting For The Sirens Call". To me, it just carrys all the feeling of trying to get over a relationship with a person that you still hold feelings for. Where everywhere you look there's reminders of the person, and he's pleaing for the person to leave them be so they can get over the break-up.
It's a really amazing song, the music works so well, and I love how Bernard sings the chorus.

New Order – Sunrise Lyrics 18 years ago
One of the best tracks off the sublime "Low Life" album. It echoes with despair, a feeling of total cynicism towards a supposed God -

"I've been waiting to hear your voice for too long now, One way conversations do not work somehow"

Just a feeling of total abandoment by someone held so high in religious practices.

New Order – Sweet Lips Lyrics 18 years ago
Not actually a New Order song this one, it's by Monaco (which included New Order's Peter Hook). Great tune though.

New Order – Waiting for the Sirens' Call Lyrics 18 years ago
I love this one too. It seems to me that it's talking about a relationship that someone decided to end, then realising how much he misses her and is trying to reclaim her love. As in the chorus part, "I've got it all wrong, Cause you were not the wrong one, And I don't know where to turn when you're gone". I'm not sure about some of the earlier verses though.

By far and away my favourite part though is the very last few lines, followed by the guitar riffs. Such a great ending for a great song.

Manic Street Preachers – 4st 7lb Lyrics 19 years ago
heh, Madkal you obviously don't know of Richey too well - he and Nicky were always dressing up in women's clothes. But yeah, it is written from the perspective of a girl, but in essence it's what Richey is feeling in his own experience that is being conveyed.
A very harrowing song though.

Joy Division – Transmission Lyrics 19 years ago
It was this song, rather than Love Will Tear Us Apart, that first got me into Joy Division. Just incredibly intense in the chorus, and contains probably my favourite lyric i've heard, the whole second verse. Just a great song.

Joy Division – Love Will Tear Us Apart Lyrics 19 years ago
Possibly the greatest song of all time (even attested to by Kurt Cobain). To me it doesn't just look on the downs of a failing relationship, but still retains a little optimism in the face of everything going wrong: "Yet there's still this appeal, That we've kept through our lives"
It's good to see that this has been nominated for the Brits as best single of all time, thoroughly deservedly.

Joy Division – Ceremony Lyrics 19 years ago
This is probably my favourite new order song. It's ashame there wasn't a chance for a proper recording using Ian's vocals. I have heard to demo on Heart and Soul, and it sounds good. New Order really did the song justice when they re-recorded it in 1987, but i love their original release in 1981 also. As to what Ian was getting at with the lyrics, i can't say, but as with so many other later Joy Division, it delves into the depressive side of Curtis' mind.

Manic Street Preachers – Stay Beautiful Lyrics 19 years ago
Well yeah, it wasn't the manics' idea as such to drop the line, but the idea during recording was that it was to be released as a single, and so obviously a clean version had to be produced. But i still reckon its a cool way of doing so, while still being blatantly obvious what comes next in the line

Manic Street Preachers – Solitude Sometimes Is Lyrics 19 years ago
Yep i do see that now too actually. have read a nicky wire interview that supports your ideas "paulothemanio". and looking at the line in particular "Drop your bombs on all i see, Leave this world alone for me" does show a longing for a place to be apart from everything else

Manic Street Preachers – Mausoleum Lyrics 19 years ago
Erm, sorry about that last 1: i really shouldn't write after i've been drinking! the camp was called Dachau not Dacau. And looks like i got this one confused with archives of pain when i'm going on about the ending. but still a fantastic song!

Manic Street Preachers – Mausoleum Lyrics 19 years ago
Sister song to the intense humming of evil - originally to be called no birds, after a visit to the extermination camp of Dacau. even when birds are considered as bringers of doom, the concentration camp of dacau is devoid of the birds, almost in knowing of the horror that took place there. Listen the the ending of the song, up loud in your headphones, and you realise how incredible this song is musically!

Manic Street Preachers – Solitude Sometimes Is Lyrics 19 years ago
I love listening to this song, possibly about being alone without neccessarily wanting to be, which is how i feel pretty often. i love the lyric "if black were truly black not grey, it might provide some depth to pray". it's just classic Nicky lrics. i also love the guitar towards the end of the song, i don't think many other albums live up to the production work used on this song and the lifeblood album.

Manic Street Preachers – 1985 Lyrics 19 years ago
I love this song, probably my second favourite off Lifeblood (not only because 1985 was my date of birth!). it just is a great song, looking back to a past time. the smiths were quoted as an influence for the album, and it is good to see them mentioned within the lyrics of the song "Morrissey and Marr gave us choice". Looking forward to hearing other people's interpretation of this song....

Manic Street Preachers – Empty Souls Lyrics 19 years ago
This is probably my favourite song off the phenomenal Lifeblood album, the keyboard melody really makes the song. I haven't listened to the single version just yet, but it is a real shame if they have left that lyric out. After all, that's what really has made the manics. No other band could get away with lyrics comparing to the collapsing of the world trade centre, but the manics are beyond that. Rather than just a sick make up of lyrics, Wire being the genius that he is uses this comparison in a very relevant context, and i really do like this song. Those that haven't bought the lifeblood album yet really should, even just for this song.

Manic Street Preachers – Sepia Lyrics 19 years ago
Quite an emotional one this one, written by Nicky about the disappearance of his close friend. It comes over as a very personal song, about how he's struggled to carry on in Richey's absence. Is very good musically, with a sweeping chorus, and i feel it would have fitted in well on the "Everything Must Go" album

Manic Street Preachers – Stay Beautiful Lyrics 19 years ago
I love this song, it's just so full of the manics early anger and desire to make an impact, with lines like "don't fall in love cos we hate you still!". classic.
And i reckon the way James cuts out the obvious omitted swear words with a cunning scrape of guitars only adds to that.
The ending declaration "anxiety is freedom" also sounds very 1984, like the party statements from the book: "War Is Peace; Freedom Is Slavery; Ignorance Is Strength"

Manic Street Preachers – Die In The Summertime Lyrics 19 years ago
Yeah i agree with both ReActor and my nothing's views on this one. the song is about the despair and sadness of an older individual longing for his days of youth, when he was happy. But you can't help but assume that these lyrics represent personal views of Richey, like so many of his holy bible era songs.

Manic Street Preachers – Bright Eyes Lyrics 19 years ago
I love this live song, James Dean Bradfield really does the lyrics justice (as we've come to expect). It was a number 1 for Art Garfunkel back in 1979, and was written by Mike Batt about the death of his father. It's usually associated with the film "Watership Down", but this really is beautiful and harrowing to listen to.

Manic Street Preachers – Repeat (UK) Lyrics 19 years ago
Repeat was released as a double A-side with Love's Sweet Exile. Although i suppose of the two tracks Love's Sweet Exile was given preferential status. I'm not quite so keen on this song, but you've got to like the heavy guitar parts!

Manic Street Preachers – Faster Lyrics 19 years ago
Norman Mailer: A contreversial american novelist, who wrote non-fiction in the style of novels, as well as writing screenplays and other works.

One of my favourite set of lyrics from the manics, especially the lines "if you stand up like a nail then you will be knocked down. i've been too honest with myself i should have lied like everybody else". Very much delving into Richey's depressing outlook on life in general.
The title of faster, according to Nicky Wire, is about the speeding up of society in general, from the much slower pace of life that people used to lead. interestingly though, it has been suggested that the title is once again referring to anorexia, faster being a person going without food. whether that's a coincedence or not i don't know. much of he song does seem to be about a lack of self worth, and the first line "i am an architect, they call me a butcher" may be about how differently people percieve his self harm to how he does.
But it's a great song, incredibly intense to listen to.

Manic Street Preachers – Yes Lyrics 19 years ago
Whilst many of you are correct in taking this song to be one about the obvious reality of being a prostitute, gsmith is also right, as this song is one of a few off the holy bible album (PCP comes to mind) that has double meanings. Richey himself said that it was about selling yourself out, for whatever reason. As he puts it in his album notes: "The majority of your times is spent doing something you hate to get something you don’t need. Everyone has a price to buy themselves out of freedom. Say Yes to Everything." That very much sums up what he was getting at with this song.
