This song breaks my heart. I have seen how social structures, which have such
song class systems rip the underclass to shreds, and leave them with no self-esteem. I feel that these days the poor in Britain, and i´m sure in other countries too, have to live through fantasy rather than face the reality of their lives. The poor are being more and more ostracized in our culture too, just take the word ´chav´. It is not ok. |

kmacloud62 is right. It's about Stalin... how can everyone else not see? "He grew a blood red vision for all their good intentions" - obviously about communism's orginal good intentions.
He once said "one death is a tragedy, a million is a statisic." He sent millions and millions of his own people to death during WWII. Despite this, is he was hero worshiped up until his death. They had to start de-stalinisation when he died to de-brainwash people. |

This song is obviously about death..
"I'm waiting for the train
The subway that only goes one way
The stupid thing that will come to pull us apart"
To me the person the song is reffering to has spent everything and (as in lost everything/everybody/will or energy to live - could even be drugs really) and is now using Elliott as a 'credit' to continue... "And now I'm a crushed credit card registered to Smith"
"white like a saint" reffers to the death.
"Every thing you do makes me want to die" Is 'the biggest Lie' because this person is dead.. its everything they don't do that makes him want to die. |

I when he says he wont pretenf to feel regret means he wont regret leaving her. Rather than feel regret hurting her. I think there is a difference.

I agree that this song is about being with a girl who you dont love. "nothing to turn off" means he can't turn it off because it wasn't turned on to begin with.
This girl Joanna is the one he actually loves. I guess its the idea of her now she has gone off with the "little boy lost" I get the impression that it's actually the memory of her he loves. You know absense makes the heart grow fonder. |

Namefrequent I don't believe that you could make such a general and angry statement about how people choose to explain their own interpretations of Elliott's music. Knowing what Elliott's state of mind was and influences can add to one's personal meaning of the song.
I would also like to add to my earlier post of what I believe the song to be about. When one starts to believe they can do what they want to, rejecting religion and therefor heaven/hell, one starts to loose ethics knowing that all morality itself is human made.
This is a common issue for atheists as if there is no greater power telling us what is right or wrong, then we have to decide for ourselves. Drug users such as Elliott was could tell this to themselves and believing that if something makes them feel good, how can someone tell them it is wrong? What is wrong? They are not hurting anyone except themselves.
The issue with this argument is that if there is no greater power everything looses its meaning, you can do what you like but it does not mean anything, your life looses its importance. |

I see this as being like a rape of a girl. Johny rapes her but is killing himself or his sole. Amazingly written mixing death and sex.
The red blood could be the blood from rape as well as the metaphor for johnny spirtual death.

This song to me is about Elliott Smiths search for love. The idea that the only love he can reach is that of drugs. Its the only love that doesn't leave him. Until all the drugs he used made him ill "One day I got sick, She played me a nasty old trick"
So he takes leaves his true love, drugs, although they were his lover, he found it hard to live without them. "My love had gotten too strong"
So at the end, he has no true love and is drugged up by doctors who just treat him like all the others. He just wants to go someone where he belongs, perhaps the afterlife.
God rest Elliott smiths sole. Lets hope he's home now. |

I see this song as being alcohol talking to him when he is stuck in a cage of depression/alcoholism. I also see the use of the word ‘bars’ being a pun. Meaning stuck in a cage/cell also meaning bars where you drink. Perhaps because of his depression being the cage, also a bar being a cage both forcing him to drink. But sometimes i think we read to deeply into peoples songs - perhaps past the real meaning. |
