Dear wakeupshiny: It's narrator, not narrater. Otherwise, very very interesting although I'm sure nobody else will read it cause it's so long. I get the impression that it's more about the relationship with religion than the relationship with a person. I don't think the "maiden-mother-crone" is a woman, I think it's a theology. "They looted the museum" and all that is clearly about Christianity stealing traditions from paganism (xmas anyone?). He says "three worlds at once that blend together" which makes it seem like there should be three religious worlds represented but I don't see a third... or I don't know what it is. I would guess that the third time he says "I loved you triple-spiral" he'd be talking about the third, but it's maiden-mother-crone again... but it's somehow different because it's the one that wakes his mind from its "stowed" and "fallow" state -- so it's the one that makes him think and realize that religion is a sham? Maybe that one IS a person... I really don't know. Also, a "Tiffany window" is a stained-glass window... churches and whatnot... not sure what the "origami rose" is referencing (if anything specifically), but I did spend a couple of hours attempting to make one. |

The first 2.5 minutes of this song are missing. The lyrics are: I feel like hip-hop,used to be a voice for the voiceless, you know? And now it's become, at least in the mainstream, a symbol of misogyny, gay-panning, fiscal irresponsibility... so I figure, if you can't beat 'em, join 'em. This girl is seemingly perfect, but if you think about the way it's worded, some things make it clear that she's not. "She's got...a believable smile" portrays that, eventhough she may not be sincere, the smile seems it, and Maria/the speaker's smile isn't believable, which makes it interesting when she later says "I just smile when she waves" Also, this other woman "paints colors on her eyes that cast a shadow of surprise"...eventhough she looks like she's surprised, she's not at all, and she's just painting on the facade. Also, the line "She'll find out where you are" is a little creepy and almost stalker-esque. Clearly this girl isn't as perfect as she seems at initial glance. Also, it seems as though this perfect girl has done something shameful with the line "she doesn't know I know about it" which is where any suggestions of infidelity come through for me, but really it could be anything. Mostly, I think this song is about not being able to put up that facade and fake it for people. Maria/the speaker smiles back when she waves, but we already know Maria's smile isn't believable.... |

Is it generally accepted that when he says "you're so cute when you're slurring your speech" he's mocking the person (assumedly girl) he's talking to? Cause that's what I got. "you can't find nothing at all if there was nothing there all along" is trying to rebuild a relationship (and rekindle the love) that was never good to begin with. |

"you and me | have seen everything to see | from bangkok to calgary | and the soles of our shoes | are all worn down | the time for sleep is now | there's nothign to cry about | cause we'll hold each other soon" I think it's pretty straightforward that the two people (the speaker and his(?) lover) are elderly. That whole bit above is about how they've "seen everything" or lived a long and full life, and "the time for sleep is now" a. the elderly often die in their sleep, and b. sleep=death, they're ready to go on to the next step after living. This concept of being old and in love seems to be a recurring theme for Ben (see The Sound of Settling...well, maybe not in love in that one, and maybe he's mocking it, but being old at any rate...) |

POTENTIAL GATSBY SPOILERS!!! I also caught the Gatsby reference (esp. "your voice sounds like money and your face is cute") and actually came on here to see if I wasn't alone, and if anyone knew if it was actually written about Gatsby and Daisy's relationship. Here's my take on it: First of all, I'd like to mention that I believe the line is "aqua lube" not "aqua tube" so it wouldn't be a reference to Gatsby's wherabouts at the end. On to the allusion: What first tipped me off was obviously "your voice sounds like money and your face is cute" because of the incredible emphasis put on Daisy's voice throughout the novel, and how Nick actually comes to the realization that her voice sounds like money. "you touch everything with a velvet glove" is the way Daisy lives her life with Tom. She and Tom have "acheived" the American dream of wealth, and she looks upon others with disdain. Gatsby then reunites with Daisy and she "tries a life of sin" attending his "uncivilised" parties and betraying Tom. Even the "craning your neck at my car wreck" could be a reference to the end of The Great Gatsby when Daisy runs Myrtle over, and later on Tom, Nick, and Jordan arrive on the scene rubbernecking like no other. "I remember you and me used to spend the whole goddamned day in bed" could be a reference to the history between Gatsby and Daisy that Gatsby tries to hang onto, but that's something of a stretch, and as far as "losing a whole year" goes, the book may or may not have taken place over the course of a year (I'm completely making that one up, nothing whatsoever to back it, so feel free to refute it). I just wanted to share my thoughts on Gatsby and 3EB. For those of you who havent' read Gatsby, you should, and you shouldn't have read this, though I knew the ending of it before I read it and I still enjoyed it immensely. |

| This is about how they write the songs for the sake of writing the music, but they are asked as professionals to constantly crank out hits (they're looking for money as they clean my artistic womb) and when they write songs, they have to sell them because they can't afford not to (and when I give birth to the child i must take to flight cause the black in ouf pocket won't let us fight a proper fight) and they're sick of the commercialism and want to make a difference, but they don't know if they ever will, and they want a "sign" to see if they ever will (we're all tired and we'd like to know if we should pack up our tents shut down the show). The second verse is about being controlled by the record companies but not saying anything because its a sacrifice they have to make to get their music out there. | |
