Katy Perry – Ur So Gay Lyrics 16 years ago
A guy broke up with this lady, so she wrote a song complaining about how he wears makeup. It's a popular song, so it will likely perpetuate gay = bad, and/ or effeminate. She is sure to note, several times, that he "[doesn't] even like boys," which is to say that usually people who act or dress the awful way he does, their excuse is that they're gay. I'm quite sure she has no idea the song is offensive, but how can gay people not be offended when the song implies that effeminate, "fake," or other bad people are usually gay? I mean, really, if a straight guy wearing makeup makes you vomit, shouldn't a gay guy in makeup make you do the same? Should we really say, "Ewww, a guy in makeup!! Sicko!! Wait, he likes men... Never mind!" Ridiculous.

And the reason no one else commented here is that "ur" is not a word. It's "you're."

Relient K – Be My Escape Lyrics 17 years ago
It's about Yahweh or a girl/guy, whichever you like. Whatever will make you buy the CD. Seriously, Godsongs are often worded ambiguously so they can be enjoyed by the religious and the in-love simultaneously. It's good business.

The following chunk is very Jesus-specific, though:

"And this life sentence that I’m serving
I admit that I’m every bit deserving
But the beauty of grace is that it makes life not fair"

The bit about life not being fair refers to the Christian answer to the Problem of Evil (why would a good god allow bad things to happen to good people, etc.) The Christian answer is to say that all humans are wicked and deserve everlasting torture, and the unfair thing we ought to focus on is that god tortured his son so that we don't have to be tortured. "Sure, it's unfair that children die of cancer, but it's also unfair that we go to heaven. So, see...balances out!"

Crazy Town – Butterfly Lyrics 19 years ago
"do u actually think this is a good song...its a buch of tattoo'd guys who make themselves out to be all hard...then sing about a butterfly!"

So in order for you to like a song, it must be consistent with the band's overall image? And if a band is perceived as "all hard" they shouldn't write love songs? I don't think it's inconsistent to express different emotions. But it's interesting that you think that.

Dashboard Confessional – This Old Wound Lyrics 19 years ago
"notice in later line that "luck" is used where "faith" should be inserted"

Well that's completely wrong. So you think it should be "I believe in faith"? Faith isn't what you believe in, it's what it takes to believe in something. But okay, maybe I'm making a stupid semantic argument. Maybe you meant that it should be "I believe in [whatever god/goddess you believe in]." Then you'd just be projecting your own beliefs onto him. But I guess that's the point: being able to see yourself as the character in the song. So. Yeah.

Gwen Stefani – Rich Girl Lyrics 19 years ago
Yeah, it's a cover of a Patra song from like 1994.

The Cure – Lullaby Lyrics 19 years ago
No, you should accept that Robert Smith used to eat dinner with Mary Jane Watson and Spider-Man, which is clearly what this song's about. Trust me.

Nice song.

To me, it's all about spaceship-piloting, animated cartoon Matt Damon's and deep knee bends in leather pants.

Iron & Wine – Such Great Heights (Postal Service cover) Lyrics 19 years ago
Since I've heard the Postal Service one too many times, I like this one better. But I think the reason this song works for me is that it's a cover. Without the original to contrast it with, I don't think I'd like it as much. I mean, the fast techno-y original makes this one seem even slower. I guess those odd lyrics help too.

I have a version of this song by a band called "Table." I looked them up and can't find anything. I can't even find the original mp3. Anyone know anything about this version?

I dunno, maybe you're thinking of "the drowners."

Lifehouse – Hanging By A Moment Lyrics 19 years ago
ksg, there may be a god, or there may not be. I don't pretend to know. You're lying if you say you know one way or another.

As for the meaning of this song, it means what you want it to mean. One of the main reasons we like songs is that we can relate them to our own lives. If you're like the guy from Lifehouse, it probably makes most sense as a Christian song. But it makes no mention of Jesus, so Jews are free to think of it as a song about Yaweh, and the non-religious can think of it as a human-human love song. To restrict the meaning to what the original author had in mind is pretty limiting.

Lifehouse – Breathing Lyrics 19 years ago
The most comericailly successful religious songs were intentionally left ambiguous as this one is. Yes, to the guy who wrote the song, "God" means Jesus. But it's non-specific enough that it also works as a regular love-between-two-humans love song.

Why does he mention heaven if it's a normal love song? I dunno, it could mean that when he's with his girlfriend/boyfriend he feels like he's in heaven.

Yeah. In conclusion, because it doesn't make explicit reference to a god or loved one, it appeals to the largest audience possible.

The Smiths – Ask Lyrics 19 years ago
But what else from the context suggests war? "Bomb" just seems sort of random.

I think it's about Robert Smith's creepy dining experience with Peter Parker's alter-ego.

The Smiths – Ask Lyrics 19 years ago
I always thought it was "bond" and not "bomb." I mean, doesn't it make more sense for people to be brought together by a common bond, maybe shyness? I dunno. Then again, I used to think "son and the heir" was "Sun and the air."
