i think its about a couple being stuck, either in a situation or arguement. the most amazing line: "cause now we say goodnight from our own seperate sides like brothers on a hotel bed". obviously there is tension between the two. best song off of plans. |

to me, i think the song is a representation of the path of life; two brothers lose a grandmother. the narrator, follows the narrow path, lives a good life and doesnt sin (or he does and asks for forgiveness). but the brother wonders off, gets bit by rattle snakes, breaks his legs (metephor's for sinning). when the narrator arrives at grandma's house (heaven-more symbolitry) his grandma asks where his brother is-he has wondered off the narrow path and has become a sinner, yet not asked for God's forgiveness and therefore wont go to heaven. the second half of the song is like the epilogue. i think by "for a race well run" he means by following in the footsteps of Jesus, being a good person who is kind, considerate, thankful, etc. he'll recieve a mansion on the river jordan and a crown of diamonds (the narrators vision of heaven might be that you get your wishes, whatever) "i won't ever lock my doors i will trust my neigbors confident that they desreve to be there in heaven, too" i think those lines are saying that the people in heaven will be people who aren't sinners, and those who followed in the footsteps of Jesus, or were a disciple in everyday life. he wont have to lock his doors because all the "evil" or "bad" people of the world (much like his brother) wont be found in heaven. i am not disagreeing with anyone else's thought, nor am i saying mine is right, but tim walsh himself said he enjoys when fans have their own opinions on what dave's songs mean. thanks. |
