Paul Dempsey – Theme from Nice Guy Lyrics 12 years ago
When I saw him live he announced this one by saying, "this one's about waking up one morning and realising you're a cunt." Take from that what you will, but I think he was being pretty unambiguous.

Radiohead – Motion Picture Soundtrack Lyrics 15 years ago
I'm not one to immediately jump to every song being about suicide, but it seems to me this one is. Not of the narrator, but of someone close to them. I think the song is the process of dealing with the grief and questions surrounding an act of suicide. I think the chorus fits with this, almost as if with the 'maybe' part he's asking if it's really that crazy for someone to take their own life. Dunno though, everyone has pretty good interpretations

Sigur Rós – Svó Hljótt Lyrics 15 years ago
Conky, only most of the second half of this song is on hopelandic. The first half is in Icelandic and thus can be translated, thanks to arnfdeno for translating it.

Anyway, this is I think the best on Takk.... Glosoli and Hoppipolla get so much recognition but, as much as I love those songs, I think Svo Hljott is just as good if not better. The emotion is so rich in it and the build up and climax are just as beautiful as that in Glosoli. Perfect songwriting, lyrically too. Whether you know the translation or not, somehow the words he is saying, like mindcircus said, you just know it's soothing and beautiful.

I agree, really beautiful song. But is it just me or is there one point where the vocals are pretty much identical to Glosoli. Ah well, nice song.

Sigur Rós – Hljómalind Lyrics 15 years ago
I thought the verses sounded a lot like "you rise on my fall" as well. I know it's all in Hopelandic but so often Jonsi's Hopelandic songs seem to make sense in English e.g Andvari's "I love you". Anyway, I've sat and tried to work out what the chorus could be in English but have got nothing. Either way I'm happy to just sit and listen to this brilliant song. Easily the best on Hvarf if you ask me.

Sleeping At Last – Careful Hands Lyrics 15 years ago
Yeah, to me I think it's about trying to find the beauty in the world we've created rather than dwelling on the pain and it's just saying that the only way we can do this is by carefully extracting moments of beauty from all the crap. But at the same time I don't really want to analyse the lyrics too much at the risk of losing beauty to understanding.

Sleeping At Last – All That Is Beautiful Lyrics 16 years ago
I think this song touches on how sheltered the church is. Perhaps suggesting that people's views of if being a bit self-centred and not grounded in reality might be a little bit true.

Maybe we think too much about heaven, and thus can't see the beauty in the world around us. Maybe we're scared to step into the real world, because the walls of our church are so safe. Maybe we are forced into opinions a bit. I don't know. But I think this is a wicked song that brings some up some very important and challenging observations.

Bell X1 – In Every Sunflower Lyrics 16 years ago
"Though we're all pillars of salt now
It was worth it for the view."

I think this refers to the bible story where God destroys Sodom but saves Lot and his family but Lot's wife looks back at the destruction of the city and gets turned into salt. I like the way he twists this metaphor, to me saying, we might be looking back at pain and thus get 'turned into salt', but it's worth it. Man this is such a beautiful song. Every line is just gorgeous

Sleeping At Last – Heaven Breaks Lyrics 16 years ago
Such a beautiful song. To me it's about the moment when heaven meets earth, eradicating humanity's greed and conflict and selfishness to be replaced by love. Not necessarily the apocalypse or anything like that, I think maybe just more saying that if all we did was love, then we would see heaven here on earth. That's, of course, trying to put Sleeping at Last's complex lyrics into one simple explanation.

Sleeping At Last – Night Must End Lyrics 16 years ago
I think it's just about persevering through dark times. I mean, I'm sure there's more too it than that but put simply, I think that's what it's about. I love the image of the bridge underwater, pure genius. And:

'There's something about sadness that leaves us wanting more'

Beautiful. I think these guys are really great thinkers. And we say our generation has no philosophers.

Counting Crows – Children In Bloom Lyrics 17 years ago
I guess this song's just about growing up and losing the innocence of childhood. Counting Crows seem to write a lot of songs about this. It's just beautiful, nostalgia always is.

I just love the way Duritz makes things so personal, looking back at specific things in his childhood. Things like the whole, 'leave my sister alone, because she don't deserve this.' I guess it's talking about how we grow up with our siblings and remember the things we used to do as kids together, and he's just telling time to leave her alone because she doesn't deserve to lose that innocence. I think the Nicold reference goes along the same lines. The picture I get is of an old friend, Nicole, who he hasn't seen in awhile and so still remembers her as a child. But now she's grown up, got married ('the altar is empty') and suddenly he kind of realises his childhood is gone. It's pretty sad stuff, very touching.

Counting Crows – Angels of the Silences Lyrics 17 years ago
Yeah, I see this song as a cry to God. I think he's trying to say that he would believe in God if he could get a reason too. I think that's summed up in the line, "Why'd you leave us till we're only good for waiting for you?". To me just saying, if you're such a good God, why leave us like this. It's almost lie he wants to have that faith, but simply can't rind a reason too, 'all my sins, I would pay for them if I could come back to you." I don't know what Duritz believes but he seems to think a lot about spiritual things and this is another great representation of his remarkable ability to put those thoughts into words.

Switchfoot – C'mon, C'mon Lyrics 17 years ago
It hasn't been on any albums to date. I got it on the Oh! EP you got if you ordered Oh! Gravity online.

I'm leaning toward this song being about a relationship, more specifically a marriage. Largely from the 'Let's not be our parents.' I guess these days divorce rates are through the roof and so, while he may not mean his parents in particular, he's just referring to so many parents in the world who leave their relationships.Maybe it's written just after a fight with words they'll regret but it's just saying there's always time for a new beginning. But as said, it could be about starting over in anything

Switchfoot – Daisy Lyrics 17 years ago
I kind of think it's comparing Jesus to a Daisy. It talks about the Daisy just giving itself away, kind of how Jesus did but ultimately the world doesn't care. There's this beautiful flower out on display, for free, and we just walk by with maybe a quick, 'oh that's pretty'. And I guess it's just saying why do they both do it. The world doesn't care, so just let it go. It would be the obvious thing to do, but the point is both Daisies and Christ still give themselves away.

Switchfoot – Betrayal Lyrics 17 years ago
I absolutely adore this song, even in the crappy live recording. But one line I just don't quite buy, 'then they write a book.' I dunno. Just seems that the line 'Someone always wins' sets up something huge and then Jon was struggling for a follow up. Unless it has some meaning that I'm not aware of that makes it make sense. If so please tell me, I hate finding flaws in songs I like. Otherwise it just doesn't quite do it for me.

Switchfoot – Monday Comes Around Lyrics 17 years ago
I kind of look at it the opposite. I don't think it's about this but when I hear the words I think of Uni and school. Whenever Friday comes I get this sense of relief because it's the weekend and I have a couple of days rest where I don't have to do anything. But the point is Monday will come around and the stresses will just be greater if I don't make good use of the two days I've got. That's just what I think of. I can't explain it any more than that.

Switchfoot – Let Your Love Be Strong Lyrics 17 years ago
I think in that line Jon's talking about every last resort he uses in the fight for life. The whole verse is talking about letting wars begin etc., so I think he's kind of saying I'll even take the monkeys on my back (bad habits, hang ups) and use them in this fight. It's kind of like we have to use these things, we can't just get rid of them. That's my interpretation anyway, I think it made a lot more sense in my head than what it does here.

Switchfoot – Let Your Love Be Strong Lyrics 17 years ago
Hey everyone. Love this song to bits. How can one describe it? I don't think it's possible, just beautiful. Anyway, to me it's just saying so much in this world is not how it's meant to be and all that's left that is honest and worth holding onto is love, God's and our own. A simple message but whoever said it needed to be complex, it's just beautifully conveyed.
Interesting question. I the line 'maybe our stars are unanimously tired' do you think Jon's referring to 'stars' as in the stars in the sky or 'stars' as in celebrity stars? I just assumed he meant stars in the sky but the reference to Los Angeles in the line before suggests he could mean celebrities. I don't know the relevance of that, just an random thought I had. Love to hear your views.

Bell X1 – I'll See Your Heart & Raise You Mine Lyrics 17 years ago
I just think it's about human nature and the constant battle between good and evil that goes on between us, even back to the days of Eden. When he says "I'll see your heart and I'll raise you mine" I think he means each side is pushing to get their nature, their heart, higher than the other.

Switchfoot – The Blues Lyrics 17 years ago
I think I agree with xisaacx. I don't think Jon is necessarily saying that the end of the world won't be such a bad thing. Yes, the 'hungry, poor and deserted are found' line is a positive line as it suggests the breakdown of inequality but for the most part I think this song is written as a depressing song.

Jon's statement when he says 'the end of the world might actually be a beautiful day' I think he means it might be a beautiful day like very other beautiful day we've had then suddenly bang. I.e there'll be no warnings or bad omens etc.

To me this sounds like a song that is written at a point when you see just how screwed the world is and you don't want to see the positives and I think might be Jon's way of getting everything negative off his chest, simply paying out what the world has become.

Vertical Horizon – Everything You Want Lyrics 17 years ago
This is one of the best interpretation threads I've read, loving it. I found this interview with Matt Scannell and this is what he says about it.

"The main character in this song is in love with this woman. She sees him as a friend but he sees her as a lot more. He's always there for her when her relationships go south, but the one person she never turns to is him."
- Matt Scannell

Switchfoot – Awakening Lyrics 17 years ago
I think this and 'We Are One Tonight' do relate to each other. They both kind of tell of a desperate world during the verses and then, like WishingForYou said, there's a sense of relief in the chorus with the realisation there's still hope; in either new life as in this song or in unity as in 'We Are One Tonight'.

Switchfoot – Head Over Heels (In This Life) Lyrics 17 years ago
No comments? I love this song. Very pump-upish, if that's a word. The meaning to me is Jon addressing God. I don't think I need to expand on that more, the lyrics are reasonably self explanatory I think. I'll just finish by saying I love the 'you're everything that's fair in love and war' line. Really good line. And again, awesome song.

I just love the imagery of this song. Purely beautiful. Just the idea of gazing at the stars, letting your eyes wander across the entire sky until they have no choice but to return to our world that we'd rather not face. Beautifully captures the feeling of escape you experience when just sitting still and watching the stars. I love it

The Fray – How To Save A Life Lyrics 17 years ago
I really see how this is about helping someone in need and precariousness of situations like that, particularly when the person doesn't necessarily think they need to be helped. But the first two lines of the chorus are hitting me where I am at the moment with a entirely new meaning. Have you ever had a best friend who you got to know so well that every little thing they did began to grind on you? And then you get bitter about it all and suddenly you're not sure if they're still your friend and it's really your problem. That's what it's saying to me, just those two lines. "I lost a friend somewhere along in the bitterness."

On the whole Jon Foreman thing, in case anyone cares. Him and Daniel Victor are good friends. They wrote On Fire from Switchfoot's The Beautiful Letdown together and Jon Foreman was going to be on Act 1 in a song called Throwing Chairs but it got cut from the song list for various reasons. Word is Foreman will be on Act 2 but that's just a rumour.

Neverending White Lights – A Little Piece Lyrics 17 years ago
Yeah, I think it's someone saying they will stand by and help someone else through a tough time. It could be a friend, family member, girl/boyfriend, maybe even God talking. But I think they're basically saying, "even though you're going through a terrible time I'll do anything to help you through it, even breathe for you. Just so long as you love me in return."

Also, hate to be picky but following the "I will breathe in for your love" there's another line that goes "So get a little piece." hence the name of the song. Sorry.

Neverending White Lights – The Grace Lyrics 17 years ago
Man this is a beautiful song. There's something surreal about listening to this song, you just get caught in a trance and then when it ends you wake up and go 'whoah, what happened to the last 5 minutes of my life'. But in a good way.

Anyway, I'm going to be the guy that brings God into it. Yes, I think it's a suicide song, not in an emo 'I hate my life it's not worth living anymore, I need attention' kind of a way but in a really serious tragic way. There's nothing trivial about these lyrics. But I think the singer, or writer, are addressing God or at least a higher being. I think perhaps it's all about the afterlife, asking God if there is one, whether suicide will affect where he goes etc. Basically I think it's a guy crying out to God in a time of desperation. But that's just me.

Also, becca159, Jonathan Foreman of Switchfoot did not take part in this compilation. I'm not sure which song you thought he was on but he's not.

Counting Crows – Anna Begins Lyrics 18 years ago
I find the title really interesting. Obviously a reason it is used is because the line 'Anna begins' is used several times in the song but taken out of the context of the song the meaning changes somewhat. It makes it sounds like the life of Anna is beginning and I can't help thinking maybe Adam Duritz did this on purpose. Perhaps he recognised that the relationship was too complex and was preventing Anna or maybe both of them from living properly so when she 'fades away' Anna can finally begin.
