Robyn – Call Your Girlfriend Lyrics 13 years ago
this dawned on me when i was listening a couple weeks ago: robyn is both women, the old girlfriend and the new one. she has clearly been in both positions before. she sings with all the pain and grief of the woman who's being left. this is what i love about her, she can say so much with just her voice. if she sang it a different way, perhaps this dual perspective wouldn't be as clear, it would just seem like a happy homewrecker type song. but she's so incredibly expressive that you can hear two souls from two different perspectives. love her, love this song.

Twin Shadow – At My Heels Lyrics 13 years ago
"There is no key to my gate, but you can still come around. Lean your ladder against my window and I'll come down."

Fucking beautiful. He's keeping a lover at arm's length. There's no way to "figure him out" or truly know him completely, he says. Or maybe there is, but he won't give her the "key."

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart – Even in Dreams Lyrics 13 years ago
Talk about being pure at heart.

Even in dreams, I could not betray you--that's the most pure-hearted thing I think they've ever written.

I love this song.

Arcade Fire – Vampire/Forest Fire Lyrics 14 years ago
i think the forest fire thing is supposed to be therapeutic. burning something down. getting rid of it. the forest could symbolize past memories, deep and dark and thick like a forest. and the rest of the song is about heavy family issues and haunting memories so that makes sense. i'm not really sure about the vampire metaphor though.

St. Vincent – Marry Me Lyrics 15 years ago
to me the "marry me john, you won't realize i'm gone" is sending the message that married couples, or people who stay in long-term relationships, begin to gradually "forget" each other. they stop noticing each other, both partners fade into the daily scenery for each other's eyes. and perhaps the being "gone" isn't being actually physically gone, but rather, essentially "invisible" to the person you are with.

St. Vincent – What Me Worry? Lyrics 15 years ago
she's moving on and she feels comfortable doing it. the song has such a lighthearted yet melancholy tone to it. at the end she finally detaches. ding!

Radiohead – Fake Plastic Trees Lyrics 15 years ago
to me, this song is about the depression that comes during those existential crises that everyone has on occasion, often after a painful breakup. you doubt the meaning of all that you do, and all that you have done. you doubt the necessities of all the orders and structures in the world. and probably worst of all, you doubt if you even know what real love is. thom conveys this desperate pain in the way he sings "she looks like the real thing, she tastes like the real thing, my fake plastic love." he so desperately wanted his (ex) girlfriend to be his true love, but their love disappeared, and he is left wondering if any of it was real.

also, the verse about the man who does plastic surgery is about how the attempt to maintain beauty and youth and essentially "defy" what is inevitable--aging, etc.--always fails, thanks to reality or "gravity". this messages segues very poignantly into the following verse--as if a drooping face trying to deny its oldness, the love he had fell apart, succumbed to "gravity."

that's what i get from this song.

KT Tunstall – Through The Dark Lyrics 17 years ago
Ok honestly, the person who posted these lyrics has to be straight retarded. "of how i predicted my word
i'm gonna leave it to star gases
tell me what you tell scope says
oh what is in sotoled for me now?
it's comming apart"

Kay...whatever. This song has gotta be about anyone who's entering a new phase in their life, whether it's coming of age or another emotional/mental transition. You're trying to find a sense of balance, truth, or stability--the "light"--but the dark is part of the process and the growth. Time and possibly painful experirence -- or feeling your way through the dark, is what it takes to really make that transition and grow as a result.

Cake – Sheep Go To Heaven Lyrics 19 years ago
whoa thedrizzle. you're hardcore.

anyway...yeah. i think the title "sheep go to heaven" and then goats go to hell is sort of like sheep which symbolize conformists who dont live dangerously end up going to heaven and goats, or those who take risks and reject society go to hell. thats a lot about christianity, i'd say.

Cake – Comfort Eagle Lyrics 19 years ago
this song has a lot of different meanings rolled into one, its very wordy and kind of dark. i think a lot of it is about our american, overcommercialized pop culture and how it's sometimes hand-in-hand with religion and religious cults. it is obviously becomes critical of capitalism with the lines:
"Take a bite of this apple
Mr. Corporate Events
Take a walk through the jungle
Of cardboard shanties and tents."
...I just love Cake. They are so cool. :-D

Cake – Commissioning A Symphony In C Lyrics 19 years ago
the way I interpret this song is like this. i think its going back to the 19th or 18th centuries, when people like mozart and other composers were composing these "transfixing" symphonies in basic keys of C. its once again, as cake usually is, satirical since they say "with money you squeeze from the peasants," because it isnt necessarily a brilliant piece of music, but everyone was brought together, rich and poor, by this piece of music. its about how musicians can manipulate people with even the simplest but most aesthetic music.

Cake – The Distance Lyrics 19 years ago
what the hell? anal sex? sorry but no. i was a cross country runner and this song was great motivation, so that's my connotation with it. otherwise though, when it comes to meaning, i think it's about a guy who doesn't care if he's last in any race - corporate or generally in life - but he still needs to come home to his girlfriend and is sacrificing being with her to get a job done. very symbolic. love the song.

Cake – Shadow Stabbing Lyrics 19 years ago
"Adjectives on the typewriter
He moves his words like a prize fighter
The frenzied pace of the mind inside the cell" (correction!)

well...this song i think IS about writing, even though immortal has a point about how movies use meaningful songs in shallow ways. not in this case though...it IS about a writer, possibly imprisoned, with a crazed sense of imagination, who contemplates suicide "thumbing the cool blade." all of cake's songs are so insightful. this one has a great rhythm and is so catchy, but so well lyricized too.

Cake – Opera Singer Lyrics 19 years ago
this song is about, as abstraxion said, about primadonna-types in fields of art, such as ballet obviously, where the primadonna term comes from. its filled with irony and satire of these super-talented people who believe they are above the rest of the world. in the line "my talent feeds my darker side, yet no one will complain" shows just how egomaniacal these people can get, but are so talented it's hard for others to criticize. WONDERFUL SONG. i love the riffs and drumline.
