Say Anything – Alive with the Glory Of Love Lyrics 19 years ago
I change my opinion. After extensive listening to the entire cd...I believe that every song has in itself a tie to a specific emotion or feeling. This song is about losing one's self in love despite all outside threats and those that will never understand the way it feels. This is going to sound pretty pathetic, but this CD along with what Max posted on the news section of the say anything web page has renewed my faith that love could exist. He seems to be a sincere and compassionate person and I can only hope that he recovers and writes the next cd to the full potential. I wouldn't expect anything less.

Neutral Milk Hotel – Two-Headed Boy Lyrics 19 years ago
I've always thought of this in a completly different way...That Jeff Mangum is actually in love with the idea of Anne Frank...A sort of Miniver Cheevyesque story of him being born too late to love his soulmate. If you go about the entire album in this way, it becomes one of the saddest and most beautiful love songs ever. The whole CD seems to be one long song--One descriptive transgression of Jeff Mangum, very much about the holocaust, but also about the sexual confusion of the singer--like in Holland, 1945, "The only girl I ever loved Was born with roses in her eyes But then they buried her alive One evening 1945."

coming back to the THB...I feel that two heads describes both his walk through reality and his dreamstate.

" placing fingers through the notches of your spine" could be describing the horrific experiments on and the post-mortem uses of parts of the victims' bodies by the Nazis--such as the human skin lampshades, the body fat soaps, bone funiture...vertebrae could be made into rings if ground around the outside. A person could quite literally put his or her fingers through the spinal canal of a vertebral ring.

I know that's pretty graphic...but it's my interpretation and only an opinion.

Say Anything – The Presidential Suite Lyrics 19 years ago
Christ, I'll do it myself.

You've been let on
Yes you were wrong
The whole time

You've been let on
Completely wrong
The whole time

They pave the way for every second of your day
It is no myth; no it’s the bible of the god
That they erected on the ashes of your neighborhood,
He’s looming look like the god of blunder,
Lie lie lie lie lie lie lie,
You sink to sing his praise because you’re lazy and you've been taught too much to learn.
Another pawn, a pink flamingo on the lawn of the capital of shame
With your buried head and only you to blame

You've been let on
Yes you were wrong
The whole time

You've been let on
Completely wrong
The whole time

The radio begins they take us for a ride and we are flailing,
But as hard as we may buck, the king of fools is still in place and fit to rule,
You fucking praise him; yes you fellate him with your trust,
Your parent’s parents made this happen, yeah eat your words and fold your napkins,
Another pawn a pink flamingo on the lawn and that’s all you'll ever be,
And if you thought that you were free, well

You've been let on
Yes you were wrong
The whole time

You've been let on
Completely wrong
The whole time

I'm in no way insinuating this is perfect but holy crap, the word fellate is sort of important in this song. this song isn't about Bush, it's about the state of the society that supports Bush.

Say Anything – Woe Lyrics 19 years ago
to me, I see the song as a description of a snap--an eye opening experience. max is finally saying what he wants to say, hence the first verse. The description of the girl is a metaphor for the entire lifestyle of those that she choses to associate with. let's be popular, yet still utterly alone. if she could let go of that and just not care she could eventually find peace, and maybe someone who could see her as an individual, rather than what she is, a prostitute. (of course, I'm speaking figuratively.)

"it's just seems like it's laying out what girls have to do to get guys to even notice them - go all out, all the time. and it's really too bad it's like that sometimes."

have to do? please! this is saying that she DOESN'T have to do anything, but just like in "admit it," this song paints the scene as almost a self-righteous deity. I hate the word scene--I hate that it's used as an adjective, but you have to appeal to your audience, I guess. haha I just thought of this, say anything is like the stereotypical hot girl's asshole boyfriend. Max can say anything he wants, insult and degrade the scene, alienate his fans, and they just KEEP COMING BACK FOR MORE.

Say Anything – Admit It!!! Lyrics 19 years ago
I know a girl who is perfectly described by this song. This has nothing to do with the "punk/emo" musical styling...it's about fashion and facade--the scenester/hipster junkies who would rather be dumb and look good doing it than ever hold an intellectual conversation. Also brought forward are the front runners of the "unseen scene"--the writers, the artists, the musicians, the philosophers--the pedestal is not just for the ironic. Does anyone else think that the last line of the chorus was just thrown in there jokingly? It takes the depth of this song to dizzyingly new levels of superficiality, but I think that might have been intended in admittance of max's own multi-faceted nature.

oh wow, I think Snevik is right...Neutral Milk Hotel is amazing, but I think that holland, 1945 falls short of both of the Two Headed Boys, and Oh, Comely. Before I started listening to the song in depth, I thought that in max's sarcastic, brilliant mind, he was just making fun of NMH...after all he did write songs like "the presidential suite" and "admit it!," however, I think that it's a genuine and amazing song.
