This is up there with one of my favorite songs of all time. i am a little late hearing it since it came out in the 90s but i liked it from the word go. this kind of gut wrenching love that he talks about in this song is amazing. my fav jeff buckley song without a doubt. |

To me, especially after hearing this song live and then again on the U2 @ Slane Castle DVD, i believe that this song has more of a religious aspect. Its not the first time that Bono has sewn together religion/faith/Christianity with relationships/women/sex. Bono ad-libs lyrics live and you get a sense of it more having to do with his faith and salvation than you once thought. but hey, thats just me. |

the part that amazes me about this song is larry mullen jr and the drums. As for the meaning im not quite sure if hes happy about this love or not. I cant tell if he is angry over how he feels and because of the intensity of his emotions, or if hes overjoyed by how much he needs this love. great song |

The only moron i see here is you PURPLEHAZE. Speaking of moron musicians, hendrix was sub-par at music making, a dynamite guitarist but his music wasnt all that great. This song has been covered so many times and Hendrix by far did not do the best at it, i would take Dylans, U2s, or dave matthews version over him. And to call U2 morons, you obviously have zero taste for good music. |

ive been falling more in love with WAR lately and had forgotten how good of an album it was. This is probably my 2nd fav song off that album next to New Years Day. So many U2 songs seem to deal with the confusion of the opposite sex. I can absolutely relate to that. I just had a weird weekend with a girl i know and i played this song and it seemed to fit perfectly to our situation. Its great to listen to as loud as your stereo will go.

Man i cant believe no one has made any comments on this song. This song hits hard with me. Im not sure what it means but i know what it means to me. For me, this is all the crazy things you do when you are trying to chase a girl or find a relationship with God. Its like you try to do all these things but they end up being in vain, and somehow you end up further than where you started. |

I agree that this song is about someones search for Heaven, and possibly how that search can manifest itself into a material thing. ie the Playboy Mansion. i love how Bono toys with the idea of waiting and not knowing if he can hold on til the end, but he knows somehow that he has to hold on and has to believe. this is a very underrated song, as is the entire Pop album |

this is what this song means to me. The main person (Bono i guess) is in a new relationship. Hes comfortable likes it but he still has thoughts about memories about his last relationship. To me his previous relationship was not purely, but mostly sexual. Now he thinks about her a lot and maybe be put in a situation where he could be with her again:
"we've been here before... last time you scratched at my door
the moon was naked and cold I was like a two year old
who just wanted more
if you wear that velvet dress"
the velvet dress must be something that is the proverbial 'straw that broke the camels back' Its the one thing that would put him over the edge if he saw her in it. then he cheats on whoever he is with:

it's a private show no one else going to know
I'm wanting"
Then the next day or whenever, hes back with the current girlfriend. He compares one as the sun and one as the moon. The old girl is the moon and the new girl the sun:

This is a great song. Alike many others, Bono chooses to tiptoe a line of his faith in this song. He sounds almost hypoctricital by asking Him for help but then swearing in the next line. But thats the way that U2 have always been, pushing the limits of the Christian faith. |

the line about 'i wont be blown by every breeze' is definitely a Biblical reference. I also love the line of 'Friday night running to Sunday on me knees" I love the delicate touch of Christianity Bono puts in his songs. That particular line reminds me of a Jack Johnson song called Taylor, where he says "she thinks that singing on sunday is gonna save her soul/Now that saturday is gone.'' |

I think this song is about re-commiting yourself to a relationship. My guess is that the relationship got dull at some point and they are trying to get some flavor back to it. He loves her but wonders if he should give it up to find that fire of love again.

This is without a doubt my favorite U2 song. The references to Christ and Judas are amazing. U2 always pushes the lines of Christianity and go where others wont. As a Christian i love this song even more.
as for CIATSITH01, the 'last time we met' stuff youre talking about is talking about the Last Supper. The room was low lit and everyone was very close to Jesus. It says in the Bible that the closet relationship to God and to experience his true love is through marriage. so they were as close as 'bride and groom' at the last supper. AMAZING |

U2 played this on SNL and it was absolutely amazing. I read an article that said that two of the female cast members were seen in tears because they were so happy/moved by U2. The original version of this song is great, but i was really moved by the version done live in Mexico City. The band was just hyped after performing Discotheque so it was an awesome transition into Velvet Dress. The live recording of it is great. Search it out or go buy the Mexico City concert video. |

Its amazing how Bono puts into words God's love, how His love that he is feeling now is just A DROP IN THE OCEAN, and how you have to wait to get the whole thing in Heaven. Yeah i must say that BBnet3000 is right on with this track about his dad and the Gallaghers. I think his dad or bono himself had something that really affected him with a relationship that may have turned him away from God, when he says FINGERS STILL RED WITH THE PRICK OF AN OLD ROSE. But hes learning to to keep going and knowing that he has to press on with life. He says, WELL A HEART THAT HURTS, IS A HEART THAT BEATS, meaning that hes hurt and that lets him know hes alive and can move on, but he sees things drawing to the end by saying CAN YOU HEAR THE DRUMMER SLOWING?. But all these experiences are leading him to God and hes one step closer than he was before. Awesome song. i love it. |

After reading the lyrics and listening to this song i am convinced that it is definitely about God and the state of the world. The first verse i believe is about repenting and laying your sins down to God. He says lay down your love, your sinful emotions(jealosy), and treasure to Him, and it will break the Devils back. He continues on about praying for people and hoping that by the time they reach the end of their life they have lived long and happy and leave this temporary world with a new heart. Then i believe when Bono says I DONT KNOW IF I CAN MAKE IT, IM NOT EASY ON MY KNEES, he is saying that its a tough thing to do for live for Christ but its something hes willing to do. HERES MY HEART YOU CAN BREAK IT. |
