The other night in Munich Conor told a story right before performing "Four Winds" - it is not connected to the meaning of the song, but I am going to tell you anyway. He said, last year he had a small dog that somehow sadly died, so he put it into a tiny box and wanted to bury it in his backyard, when right at the spot he buried the hole he found a small black box. Inside the box there was a tape and it had that song on it. He said, he just changed a few lines, and started playing. If that story is true, it must be older than we all know.. he must have written it a long time ago, and for the few of you that believe this song is about policy: i don't thinkg political issues of today were of his concern many years ago. ;) Who knows. |

I can't believe I did not discover Big Japan before.. to tell you the truth, I was never a big Adam Brody Fan, but since I discovered this band... I am overwhelmed. They sound awesome. Nice mixture between positive Bright Eyes Stuff, Elliott Smith, Ben Folds maybe? However: They rock. Indie. Great stuff. And such a beautiful song... and I understand the emotions of the song so well. To me, it's about those moments when you meet someone, liking that person, maybe do some flirting...but thinking you won't have a chance for long.. but it still is a good feeling to get to know that somebody, because he/she is special. You wish you'd remember this moment later on, to cheer yourself up, but you know, you won't. It is that small moments that can make your day, and that you do forget too fast. Still.. it was kind of special. For that moment. That somebody was special.. not like anyone else. "Not just another fish in the sea". |

I love this song! Especially the concentration on the refrain, \"You can do what you want to, whenever you want to / You can do what you want to, there\'s no one to stop you\" plus \"though it doesn\'t mean a thing\", that\'s just so brilliant. It tells us about the correlation of being free and feeling caged - One can handle a lot more things in life, than one would think... sometimes there are these moments in which one can see, that gaps really do not matter, that anything is possible and that there is nobody to hold you back. We could basicly do what we wanted, every day of our lives... still it seems to hard. The gaps not overcomeable... everything is deadlocked. Helpless and strong in the same motion. Crap, it\'s really hard to explain... but what I think is: Sure it can be about his drug problems. But it does not have to be. Or you could even take them as a metaphor.. and I think that\'s also what Lloyd meant. Stop being so bullheaded, naive, whatever... maybe songs want to tell us more, than the obvious. |

I agree with Supers0713 to 100%. Of course, I can also see the relation to a boy or a relationship, but it could as well be about a serious addiction. Alcohol, drugs, your television consume, food - anything, whatever you want it to be. And it sums it all up very well. I myself called this song to be my hymn concerning a certain addiction - and I am fighting, to become myself again. |

I do not think, that it is only about an "ugly guy", being a loner. To me, that interpretation is too superficial.. I would go so far and say, that this "ugliness" is inside. He does not believe, that he is worth of anything. He seems to mess up everything, thinking, he has a big "L" tattooed on his head. He is suffering under serious self-confidential problems, here. Still, he knows, he can love and wants to do so - but it seems as if everybody's too good for him, because of his inner ugliness, just as i said. Just my interpretation, anyhow. |

| i am amazed by the way they changed from their first album in 1987 named "Goo Goo Dolls" (very creative, haha.) to their second one in 1989 named "Jed".. of course, they still have some of the annoying same-sounding rythm in Jed, but at least their is some change.. in goo goo dolls, however, this is their best song... it has some kind of country-sound to it during the stanzas and is not only the same punk-alike dumb-ass music. they changed to be good acoustic pop/rock artists.. as you can see the early stuff is not what i am into.. i prefer the style they reached over the years. (and i guess this is how a lot of people feel, because this is the only song anyone commented on of the whole goo goo dolls album...) | |

i agree totally with isobel. to me, it is also about that bad-ass relationship that is really not good for anyone. this song is about realizing it. she is still thinking about him and that is what is aggrevating her.. she wants him to get gone. gone, out of her head. and this song.. mentioning, that "he don't give a shit" about her helps her to move on. helps her realize, that he is not worth it and that she has to prepare to move on, also, making clear that it is not her fault that the relationship failed. cause she did everything possible. but he is still not good for her... therefore. get gone. |

i agree with catherineks.. although i still wanted to say, that a lot of you guys said "she was trying to make him out as something he is not" that sounds way too much like it was her fault or anything to me. everybody knows that love makes you blind.. and that was what happend. she really fell in love with this guy. he seemed to be perfect to her but by the time he kept on hurting her (he used to lie, he didn't know what his heart was for) she began to wake up. she had to realize, that he was not as perfect as she once thought. that her illusion never turned into something real. |

well.. 'cornflake' comes very close to my own feelings about this song. although i think the person doesn't really have a hangover.. it's an emotion that you can get to without having drunk a lot of alcohol the night before, too. the person in the song gets sick of the world and himself "i am sick of feeling my soul" and just wants to be left alone.. emotions are almost too hard to handle sometimes and in situations like this you wish that emotions would not exist. you don't want to hear about other people's crap "i don't want another map of your head" - if you're having troubles yourself.. like noticing that everything seems to go wrong "that i was all alone" you're just sick of it. that's it. sick of everything. altough i have to agree, that you feel like this more often while having a hangover... |

finally, there is a pretty good song about missing somebody you love. a song, that you can just say about "yeah, i wish you were here. it would be better." without bursting into tears. it's like a notice and not only feeling sorry for oneself. anybody who doesn't know the song and just reads the lyrics would think i am completely stupid.. but it's the melody. it's declaring that it is just the way it is. |

i love this song. i loved it, the first time i heard it. it just describes things i was never able to put into words. something is always wrong. "i wanna know what it's like on the inside of love". - "always under or above" - "i try again and again". i've never experienced love in the way, everybody dreams of, i guess. that's what i can identify with. i loved, but i wasn't loved back in the same way. empty promises. then i didn't love, but someone was obsessed with me. and again and again. i don't give up. hope never dies. but i feel cheated on. everything seems sensless. i am just asking to experience the most wonderful thing in the world. but noone lets me in. "i know the last page so well, i can't read the first" well. i could write for hours. i connect so much with this song. it remembers me of a whole lot of crap i went through and it reawakens my hope. kind of. |
