...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead – Gold Heart Mountain Top Queen Directory (Guided by Voices cover) Lyrics 17 years ago
It's so opposite of GBV's... the original is so minimalist (just the guitar at the beginning, rougher-sounding, etc) and ToD's is so orchestral and magnificent. I think GBV's version of the song is more effective but I do like what ToD did.

Actually, I thought this was Limousine too due to the length of the track listed on Wikipedia, but this is not the case. However, I did read somewhere that "part of Untitled 5" would be on the CD.

Hopefully it's the

Break all the locks without the combination
I know where you’re headed, I consider it mine
Went to the crowns without a planning or feeling
And keep me alert until the next valentine

Please cut me out, cut me out
Plot and make me the lover you wanted
When you were young and asleep
And I’m fine when you, you burn my core from a bottle
The lover you wanted while you waited so long

part.

The Sound of Animals Fighting – The Heretic Lyrics 18 years ago
If oloz is right in his/her correction, that goes with the body image idea I just mentioned. Also the poem is actually called "Anorexic," not "Heretic," and was written by Eavan Boland.

These lyrics are actually from a song by Frodus, of the same name.

"Flesh is heretic / My body is a witch / I am burning it" is actually from a poem called "Heretic" about anorexia. If you think about it, it makes sense in a sad way... a kind of self-justification for anorexia. I believe this was cited in the Tiger & the Duke CD liner notes.

"Our souls are unrest
What kind of pride is this?
Dry your, dry your eyes
They'll salt his wounds
If burning the flesh means finding the one"

This is only something that just came to me upon glancing at the lyrics, but the last line seems to relate to unhealthy body images can affect one's mentality, or more specifically, to the modern idea that being skinny - burning the flesh - will help you find "the one."

I kinda grew to like the Sanskrit. I prefer Anthony for sure, but the Sanskrit has its charms... get used to the Sanskrit, it'll come back in another song, without Anthony.

Every Time I Die – Off Broadway Lyrics 19 years ago
The best line is "This is a musical and nothing goes wrong."

I love the irony in it.
A motto of my life.

THIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIS
this isn't living
THIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIS
is merely existing...
Gah, this song's good. When I saw them live they carried out the instrumental part right before the last chorus for a few minutes... so good. The chorus reminds me of that famous Radiohead lyric, "I'm not living, I'm just killing time." This song is especially meaningful to me because I as a high school senior am feeling pretty overwhelmed with all the stuff I have to do.. I wish I could sleep for days and days on end.

I think the meaning's obvious.
This is one of the most mellowing songs I know... for some reason I love the uses of "hello." This song is powerful. This album is great. Get it now.

Hmm, upon rereading it, I can understand Fortified's interpretation... hm, now I'm not sure. THANKS A LOT.

Brandtson – Nineveh Lyrics 19 years ago
I have to agree with fadingxthexkisses... I think he's talking about a girl he likes (his nineveh - nineveh is the city that God told Jonah to go to but he didn't want to so he tried to escape, but couldn't -- the fish ate him and spat him on Nineveh's shore, I believe) but he doesn't want to like her. He can't tell her how he feels, and doesn't want to ruin their friendship (sometimes I wonder how I call myself your friend), but the line "a failure to him" makes me think that not only is she a friend, but perhaps a friend's girlfriend. I had never listened to this song closely until just tonight.. and wow. I love it.
