i disagree with treblejones and mtfujiinmypants about the voice of the song drastically. i feel like he isn't necessarily saying that these girls are horrible or awful but rather that they are sad, conflicted. he shows that there is obviously conflict ("it only get's kinda weird when you wanna get high alone"). i don't see this so much as a declaration against such behavior but rather a solemn observation. this is is incredibly sad, but i wouldn't call it sarcastic or satirical at all. |

i love the things that craig finn does with repetition. the girl wandering out of mass (holly, i do believe), charlemagne (and his sweatpants!) and certain phrases "fog and love and faithless fear" and "she was a damned good dancer" (your little hoodrat friend).
after listening to all of this album, the hold steady are cemented in my mind as the best thing to come to music since the guitar. |

i wouldn't be so spiteful if it wasn't for the fact that a group of my friends were so completely sure that i would like them. i actualy paid money for this album and all i got in return was a group of really trite songs. hell, the only thing about any of these songs that i can dig is that they didn't hold the pretension when it came to naming them. |

having just heard this song, and not being a big fan of any of her prior work i have to say that these lyrics seem really trite and a little silly. it just seems like she's not really trying. you could PAY someone to do better than this, and that's a little sad. |

this is not autobiographical. when you say that 'conor this' or 'conor that' i wonder how you can ever read a book or watch a movie or listen to any song. wilde was full of shit of course, because all the world is autobiographical, and yes you can not create without autobiography, but you can't create without also confidence art and lies. airenette does not exist, but is representative of archetypes stolen from the universe around him, he's a wonderful theif, but his sadness isn't his, his tragedy is not his tragedy and his pain is not his pain. stop it.

If this is a joke, I'll let it pass as being just beyond my sense of humor, but at the same time I can't see how anyone can take this seriously. It's all faux-emotion. The kind of thing I'd expect to read in a diary filled with teenage angst. bah dum shh. yeah, I know, poor humor. |

In all honesty, the writing is pretty trite. I don't mind the instrumentals so much, and I apreciate the energy present in their first album, but I really can't stand listening to it for more than a few songs. I really liked them a few years ago, but I was also pretty young and in the kind of mindset needed to apreciate their lyrics. Probobly. Mates of State are better, similar singing styles, much better lyrics and much better instrumentals. |

There is something vaguely ironic about making fun of scenesters. Making fun of stupid people, no matter how stupid, makes you just as guilty as they are of the crimes you accuse them. This song has some very good hooks and I'd have to say it's place at the end of the album and the nature of the album itself has to be taken into consideration while interpreting it. |
