I've always taken this song to be about the compromise of a guy who likes to go out and party on Friday nights and the churchgoing girl. I always figured it was about his relationship with his wife. It's a good song. |

This song was the ending credits song to the movie Going Upriver, the documentary about John Kerry and his involvement with the Viet Nam Vets Against the War. This song makes me think of that movie and especially of John Kerry and his run for the presidency. |

I think American Idiot sets the tone for the beginning of the story. It tells you what kinds of world this kid is living and what is going on in the government in his world...which is a parallel of ours. |

He's also made a reference to Kerry in this song with "another protestor crossed the line to find the money's on the other side". Considering Kerry was the leader of VVAW (Viet Nam Vets Against War) in the 70s and is not a politician, that line is obviously aimed at him. |
