This song reminds me loosely of a situation a friend of mine is in and probably always will be. I think it's about being in love with the image a of a person. The kind of person that pretends to be the prefect one for you and a part of them wants to be that perfect person. But they don't think enough about themselves to be a good partner to anyone. Sometimes you'll catch a glimpse of the person you love, a perfect night out or that one private moment but the parts that you love aren't the person as a whole. "She seemed dressed in all of me" She put up a facade (for a while) of being perfect for him but no one can keep that up forever and even though her walls are crumbling and revealing her true self, he still loves her. He wants her to be real, he wants her to be the girl she pretended to be and in some ways, still is. He holds on to the good parts of her. In my friends situation, the girl can not stay faithful and craves drama and therefore is never truly all his, but he'll always love her and he tries to keep a balance with it all so it doesn't "build up inside". At least that's what it seems like to me! |

Well, no matter who wrote it or performed it first this is such a beautiful version it gives me chills... To me it seems to follow a thread of MJK sung songs that have to do with guilt associated with a death. You feel horrible because of what has happened and guilty all at the same time so you ask the questions of "You know that you tried to hide it Couldn't you have said what you meant? I think this song it about the mixture of feelings you get when a person that you saw on the edge goes over forever! |

I agree with egb that this song refers to his relationship with Devo. It seems to me, from what I have read and seen, that Maynard goes to great lengths to keep his personal life still somewhat personal. I've read that he does this for his son, so he can be a normal dad and not get mobbed every time he walks out the door. Not exactly in those words but you get the point. I think it is about the balance between Rock Star and Good Dad and how his son is the most important part of his life and that he would give up the rest, if he could, if it ever meant losing Devo in anyway. Oh and I think that it is ~ benevolent SON ~ Oh yeah and one more thing, the beginning of this song....exhilarating! |

Ahh TREXOR my old friend, getting yourself in quite a bit a trouble lately it seems! I really must say that I don't think you should have opened your presents before Christmas morning! You ruined your own surprised and now your disappointed. I'm very sorry to have recently read all about it. Let me tell you a little story old buddy... I waited! Damn it I waited till the very last second. I didn't cheat in any way. I wanted that first listen to be pure! I was at Best Buy when the doors opened on May 2nd, at 10am and I got my long awaited treasure. I was happy as a schoolgirl, playing with Great Gatsby looking cover and bubbling over with joy. Popped it in the CD player and headed for my sons play group. With the first listen I felt a bit like you have described, TREXOR. I felt like technically it was great and musically it was outstanding but lyrically it just seemed off. Not bad, not bad at all, I still loved it but I was feeling like Maynard's writing was lacking in something. Then it happened.... That night a good friend came over and in a few words changed the whole CD for me. He nonchalantly said, "I think this is his (MJK) most personal stuff to date." I was floored. How could he even think that, he must be out of his mind! But before we could delve too deep into the subject the conversation twisted and turned and went another way. The next morning at 8am I wanted so badly to wake his ass up and ask him how he could possibly say this was Maynard’s most personal work. It grinded on me all day... and so I listened and listened and listened and read and read and by the time we met again later that day I understood. It is brilliant; it's wonderful, glorious. The difference... it's less cryptic, it's more straight foward. It is still Tool in every way but it gives you a feeling that after all of these years they have dropped some of the formality with us all. It's almost charming. Listen to every album they have made no two are alike, they are all Tool but they are also humans growing and changing and the music is a reflextion. Enjoy it for what it is TREXOR. It truly is an amazing collection of sounds! |

I get choked up every time I sing with this song and I have to stop for a minute. It reminds me of a perfect friendship that almost fell apart and had been dashed on the rocks but then through careful reconstruction and delicate mending it was starting to come back together, just beginning to feel like it use too and then that friend passed away and I lost it all. |

I think this song is a sister speaking to her brother about thier upbringing. The sister is trying to get the point across that she loves thier parents even though she hates some of the things they have done. "Please, I know it's hard to believe To see a perfect forest Through so many splintered trees You and me And these shadows keep on changing" She is asking her brother to think back on the good parts of thier childhood, to reflect on the possitive and not the negative. She is basically saying, these people made us who we are and that's not all bad and you and I need to get through this and get over it and move on. |

I like what Oggy has to say and I agree with it but I think this whole album also has a very personal side to it. The feeling of this album and the personal meanings in it remind me of another wonderful collection of songs which is Tool's Lateralus. Both seem to me to be about not letting go of or giving up on the foundation people, in your life. They might be band mates, a lover, an old friend, whoever they are you have a deep connection with them. How does that old saying go? "You always hurt the ones you love" Sometimes on our way to the top or just on our way to what we want to be, we step on the people that are most important to us, we take for granted that they will always be there. Then communication breaks down, resentment starts to set in, jealousy lurks around every corner and you start to feel like maybe you'd be better off all by yourself, doing your own thing. And then there are always the people that love to see something good fall apart and they'll whisper into your brain all the reasons it's not working and encourage you to be lonely like them, misery loves company. But then you have to decided, is getting to the top and having everything exactly the way you want it really worth disconnecting from the people that care about you the most? Yes, sometimes it's hard to play well with others but it's better then being all alone in the end. Long term relationships leave scars but those scars are on your heart and they're not always so easy to forget. At least that's the feeling I get from it. |

I think it's kind of sad how everyone only sees the sexual part of this song. I mean yes it is about sex but it is also about the build up to the love making that does occur. I don't think it is a one stand either. I see it more as describing a night at yet another blasé get together with a bunch of clones and someone original walks in. Your taken by them right away and by the end of the night your bringing them back to your place but your not sure if anything will happen because this one isn't just a carbon copy whore like the ones at said get together. Of course something does happen and it turns out to be more beautiful and pleasurable then you possibly could have imagined it would be! After it's all said and done and your both laying there happily exhausted, your thinking in your head "I sure am glad she's at least a little bit of a whore." or "Thank you for being that kind of girl." |

Ok I had always thought that this was about giving birth, kind of like a mans look at it BUT my husbnad just read the words for the first time over my shoulder and said to me "It's obvious what this song is about." I was surprised by his thought on it but now I'm looking it over and I think he is right! He's says it reminds him perfectly of the feelings he has had while on acid! Here are a few key lines. "The essence of the truth The perfect moment " that time while tripping that you think you have the answere to everything. "And you feel like you're too close So you swallow another dose " Many times while riding very high you'll get the urge to take more, to know more, to go all the way. This is how people end up eating whole sheets and freakin out! It reminds me of manic depression or bi-polar. I could be way off but it sounds to me like seeing the good side of yourself and knowing when your having a good day but not being able to stop or control the bad days.
