The Walkmen – In The New Year Lyrics | 16 years ago |
i think the second to last line might actually be "i'm almost home"? |
Simon Joyner – Joy Division Lyrics | 16 years ago |
where can i get hold of this song? i've been searching for years and only ever found the bright eyes cover! lyrically i absolutely love it though |
Bright Eyes – Joy Division (Simon Joyner cover) Lyrics | 17 years ago |
by the way, does anyone know where i can get hold of the simon joyner version of this song? |
Bright Eyes – Puddle Stomper Lyrics | 17 years ago |
because before conor was conor, conor was a little boy |
The Good Life – I Am an Island Lyrics | 17 years ago |
"If I seem a little callous I assure you it’s just a scratch" i never seem to get over how clever that is |
Bright Eyes – Reinvent the Wheel Lyrics | 17 years ago |
if it is about elliott, then the line "just hoping you're alive" doesn't fit, because we know he isn't :( |
Bright Eyes – Reinvent the Wheel Lyrics | 17 years ago |
team jeff mangum! to me it fits more than elliott |
Bright Eyes – Cartoon Blues Lyrics | 17 years ago |
you're right about 'sit wringing my hands': for some reason i just couldn't make sense of that line! i can only hear 'listen', not 'listened', but i think you're right that logically it can only be the second one. damn you conor oberst and your swallowed syllables! i'm genuinely not sure whether it's 'in time we'll' or 'and time will'. i think it's fairly ambiguous. if only conor would enunciate :( (oh, and 'which one's your good ear' was the only thing i could think of that made any sort of sense for that line) cheers for helping with the lyrics :D i think this song is probably my favourite on the ep. i especially enjoy the reference to padraic my prince. |
Bright Eyes – Smoke Without Fire Lyrics | 17 years ago |
quirky_but_kewl: just to be sure, you are aware that m.ward actually DOES sing in this song, right? |
Bright Eyes – Smoke Without Fire Lyrics | 17 years ago |
additionally, a few corrections as far as i can hear: "THE welcome here is endless" "like painted WHORES" "condoNe" "so when in DROUGHT" "and pray the DEAD WOULD return" "i was LED astray" "a wolf in NO ONE's clothing" "standing still in the DUST" (??) "GIVING up on the rain" "BROTHER be afraid of the flames" :) |
Bright Eyes – Smoke Without Fire Lyrics | 17 years ago |
this song has GOT to be cohen-influenced |
Bright Eyes – Puella Quam Amo Est Pulchra Lyrics | 17 years ago |
so really jailbait, you could say that ille puer. quem amas, pulcher est? also obviously the meaning of the title is cleared up now but in case anyone's reading this discussion & getting confused about the grammar points: the reason that 'quam' is an accusative relative pronoun is that, whilst the puella is the subject of the *main* clause ("puella est pulchra"), she's the object of the *subordinate* clause (if you like, she's the, er, object of his loving). basically, he's saying "puellam amo. puella pulchra est.", so the 'quam' is referring back to the puella & agrees with it in gender and number. it's probably tricky to understand at first because we're so lazy with 'who' and 'whom' in english. a-level latin, baby! anyway, i think this song is ace; not in the same all-consuming sort of way that i did when i first heard it and i was all young & impressionable, but i still think it's a solid song. (and as for the meaning, it is probably about a girl whom he loves who is beautiful) |
Bright Eyes – Soul Singer in a Session Band Lyrics | 18 years ago |
BritneySpears Sucks: if you look around a little bit, you should be able to download a copy of it pretty easily :) this song is basically another one of those Fame Is Very Bad ones, though the line "i had a lengthy discussion about the power of myth with a postmodern author who didn't exist" is pretty awesome. |
Bright Eyes – Four Winds Lyrics | 18 years ago |
is it possible that the first 2 lines are something along the lines of: ''your class, your cash, your country, sect, your name or your tribe there's people always dying trying to keep them alive''? another good one. |
Bright Eyes – Soul Singer in a Session Band Lyrics | 18 years ago |
this is a good song. i think it's ''post modern AUTHOR'' not offer, though? |
Bright Eyes – Joy Division (Simon Joyner cover) Lyrics | 18 years ago |
it's a cover of a simon joyner song, anyway. |
Bright Eyes – Go Find Yourself a Dry Place Lyrics | 18 years ago |
i always thought it was "truth is built on SHAKY ground". anyway, good song. |
Bright Eyes – Joy Division (Simon Joyner cover) Lyrics | 18 years ago |
here's a correctly spelt (and slightly lyrically corrected) version: that crucial filament is all but spent and soon it will be dark in my basement my heart is waxing the slick floor again hoping i'll slip, and fall in love well, she gave me the choice to remain and rejoice or to recoil and rebel well, papa, this gravity attack yeah, it's a gravity attack and i can't seem to carry, much less bury the past well, your ex-girlfriend said i was a terrible mess yeah, she's got a real good head on her shoulders when the singer spoke and confessed he didn't really smoke cigarettes, she said her teenage brother smouldered on a hotbed of coal in a sterile white room underneath that joy division poster he moaned papa, he moaned papa, sometimes i gotta vent my spleen! sometimes i gotta vent my spleen when i get shattered in the heart and scattered in the brain well, all the medicine in these sermons still can't keep his brazen nose from turning and salvation, it may come free of charge but faith always costs him something they say there's nothing as sacred as the blood between brothers when it's pricked from their thumbs and exchanged beneath the covers well, papa, my brother is gone! yeah, my brother is gone! so would you tell me now how it is i'm supposed to get along? well, you asked for a chorus but you got a refrain yeah, it's another sad song that moves like a train you can't whistle to it but you can fast-forward through it flick it off your shoulder like dead skin they say my head on a plate may curve the debate about the unbearable high cost of living but papa, everything falls apart! everything falls apart and the grass will grow as surely as they'll break your heart |

Bright Eyes – An Interview with Conor Oberst Lyrics | 19 years ago |
blacklist: His name is Conor, it's not actually him in the interview, and that's not actually someone from the radio anyway. Apart from that, I concur. |
Bright Eyes – An Interview with Conor Oberst Lyrics | 19 years ago |
atticus_finch: It's at the end of 'An Attempt To Tip The Scales' on 'Fevers And Mirrors'. |
Lifehouse – Eighties Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Perhaps one of my favourite Lifehouse songs. It confronts, I believe, the struggle to find a self-identity through the haze of youth and bad decisions. |
Bright Eyes – Light Pollution Lyrics | 19 years ago |
tiki_12: An 1800s physicist used to lend Conor Oberst books and mic stands?! |
Bright Eyes – Poison Oak Lyrics | 19 years ago |
When mining still went on on a large-scale basis, they used to send canaries down to warn of any danger. So, "you're the yellow bird that I've been waiting for" The yellow bird - canary - has returned. This means that the path ahead is clear, and Conor is able to start moving on and living his life again... just a thought. It works for 'We Are Nowhere, And It's Now', too. |
Bright Eyes – We Are Nowhere and It's Now Lyrics | 19 years ago |
As for the 'yellow bird' reference: They used to send canaries (which are yellow. And birds.) down the mines to find out if there was a lack of oxygen or any other dangerous gases - if the canary died, then they knew that something was wrong, and so they didn't send the humans down. So, "did you forget that yellow bird?" - did you forget to send the bird down first, to check if the coast was clear? Did you just plunge ahead and find out too late that there was danger awaiting you? Just a theory :) |
Bright Eyes – Another Travelin' Song Lyrics | 19 years ago |
A few minor corrections, I think: "and I'm sayin' nothing in the past or future ever will feel LIKE today" "all my thoughts, THEY COME IN PAIRS" "I'm not SURPRISED, but I never feel quite prepared" "I will kick and scream or kneel and PLEAD" I don't think it's "I DOUBT, I don't", but I'm not entirely sure what it actually is. I do? I die? |
Bright Eyes – Hit the Switch Lyrics | 19 years ago |
claytonbellmor: No, it's definitely vodka. Turn it up and listen carefully. The best song on this CD, I think - definitely the most instantly appealing to me. |
Bright Eyes – Gold Mine Gutted Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Isn't it WE were a stroke of luck? |

Lifehouse – Somebody Else's Song Lyrics | 19 years ago |
brookecarlson: That's probably because it's not. |
Lifehouse – Somebody Else's Song Lyrics | 19 years ago |
We are all controlled by something, be it parents, peers, society.. we're all under someone's control. None of us can honestly say that our thoughts are entirely ours - that our words are not recycled from things we've heard from others. And, in the end, none of it actually means anything. It would be nice to be able to live a life free of other people's opinions - maybe then, we would be able to know what we really think. |
Bright Eyes – From a Balance Beam Lyrics | 19 years ago |
"finally... you are free! You are free! You are freezing!" Death is cold. Death is freedom. Death unlocks us from the restraints of life. In death, we will "finally know the way out of here" and will be liberated. In some ways, we are all waiting for our "guard" to set us free. For what is life, if not a preparation for death? Conor has a way with words. |
