Ted Leo and the Pharmacists – St. John The Divine Lyrics 18 years ago
I think it's an anti-drug song.

The first verse is key: "the world will stay the same but your place in relation to it has changed," refers to hallucinations.

" And when the word begins to loose its power to restore and soothe" is about how you begin turning to drugs more and more for comfort.

"Well taxes now was once your wealth. When tucks and aches becomes your health," is basically about addiction, and how you begin to need the drug.

The next two verses just talk about the spread of the addiction, and how things are getting "blacker".

I'm not totally sure how the last verse relates, but there's my interpretation :)

Spoon – My Mathematical Mind Lyrics 18 years ago
I can't believes no one's posted for this song, it's my favorite on "Gimme Fiction". The lyrics remind me of a malfunctioning machine

Spoon – The Two Sides Of Monsieur Valentine Lyrics 18 years ago
First of all, "The Stranger Dance" does not actually exist.

This song is basically summarized by the line, "You think mthe score's set, but you can't truly see". The lyrics don't need to make total sense, because the point is that everything has two sides, and nothing is what you think it is. I love how surreal the words are, especially "He makes Love to the Duke/ He swordfights the Queen/ He steals the whole show with his last dying scene"

The Dresden Dolls – Girl Anachronism Lyrics 19 years ago
This reminds me of the System of a Down song "Sugar". Both about really fucked up people...and the the singers have so much emotion. You want to listen to the songs again and again to catch everything.

Pavement – Loretta's Scars Lyrics 19 years ago
I think this is a sweet-confused-sad song about a girl named Loretta who's had lots of problems in her life. Metal scars=unhealable. He's trying to figure out how to comfort her without losing too much of himself. Already the sun "makes me anxious makes me run"...he's getting sort of scared by her stories already.

but what the hell is it about?

Ani DiFranco – Loom Lyrics 19 years ago
Yeah, this song and the entire Little Plastic Castle CD reveal her insecurities and vulnerabilities.

"I was giggling and dizzy, flirting like a 12 year old girl" and you get the image of a sweet naive kid in love. Of course, there's the darker undertone of what happens when she leaves this trance and isn't so innocent anymore.

I love this song! the line "We're concerned more with a car than with the fact the light had changed" is so great.

Nirvana – Lithium Lyrics 19 years ago
Great song...its so incredibly tortured and depraved. Even if you didn't know the lyrics, you could still feel the intensity of a breakdown in the music. This song is beautifully fucked up.

Ted Leo and the Pharmacists – Timorous Me Lyrics 19 years ago
ooh ooh ooh amazing song. I'm amazed that this band isn't super famous.

runningincircles is right...its about his relationships and friends who you'd have to know to understand all of the lyrics. The song brings to mind a guys itting looking at photos and reminiscing about all the good and bad memories...its a beautiful song.

Ani DiFranco – Two Little Girls Lyrics 19 years ago
This is my favorite Ani song...it gives me such a sense of who she is. Here she's this scared, innocent little girl desperately trying to save her friend from something she doesn't understand herself (drugs). Ani is trying to help her ex, who's new girlfriend is hurting her. God i can relate so much to that feeling of trying to delve into the unknown and save someone you love, yet not knowing just how much to interfere.

Weezer – I Swear It's True Lyrics 19 years ago
I can't believe no one's written abuot this one! it's not on an album, but is on the delux edition of the blue album. it has a very pinkerton-like sound.

The lyrics speak for themselves, which is what i love about it. The song has this incredible booming bass line and slow, cool beat. The words are so sincere and pitiful, i just love it!

Weezer – Lullaby For Wayne Lyrics 19 years ago
Great song! It's peppy and exciting while its got this sad, eerie undertone. Rivers' voice also sounds amazing!

I assume it's about a guy who was lonely in high school, and long after graduation is still angry toward his classmates. I don't know if it has to do with school shootings but thats what comes to mind with the whole gun theme.

Weezer – Tired Of Sex Lyrics 19 years ago
I actually don't think this song is really about being tired of sex. It's about frustration with not having enough sex, or not being wanted by girls. Rivers sees all hir peers having wild nights while he stays at home, so he covers up for this insecurity by saying he's tired of sex. It's about desperate loneliness and insecurity.

This is probably my favorite song of all time, and Punkerton is my favorite album. The whole CD is full of so much emotion...i can listen to it when I'm happy and feel great about myself, and then i can listen to it when I'm depressed or frustrated or lonely and i can relate so much to what Rivers is singing. God this is amazing!

Letters to Cleo – Big Star Lyrics 19 years ago
Oooh very very good song. I'm really suprised no one's posted about it!

It's about a little crush that turns into something much bigger. I'm not exactly sure what it turns into though.

i wish this song had more lyrics. Hanley could have elaborated more on the topic but i don't know why they made it so short.

Letters to Cleo – I See Lyrics 19 years ago
A lot of Kay HAnley's lyrics have the same theme...how life's so complicated and a person can go insane thinking too much. Unlike "Here and Now", this sogn is pretty pessimistic.

"I'll lock the bedroom door and simply stay at home".

It's interesting how this is a very happy tune yet has sad lyrics.

Letters to Cleo – Here And Now Lyrics 19 years ago
It's got a nice moral...don't focus on "rising above the sky" or being important...just live for the moment. There's so much crap a person can think about or try to achieve but in the end its only going to keep you from having fun. Live in the here and now.

Letters to Cleo was amazing. How is Kay Hanley's new band, Ladyapples? I haven't heard them.

No Doubt – Snakes Lyrics 19 years ago
And No Doubt's political side comes out.

Snakes represent hate and war. Just play the flute, open the basket, and they'll come out and spread their poison. Ordinary people "fall down to the underground", get caught up in it, and terrible things happen. It's references to corporate boards and generals show that this song is critical of both sides of a war, specifically the United States.

Somebody please play this for George W!

No Doubt – Platinum Blonde Life Lyrics 19 years ago
This is by far the best song on their new CD.

The music is glamorous and upbeat, like Gwen's dream world, yet there's a slightly dark undertone. The lyrics are actually pretty depressing...how she wants this perfect life so badly she's willing to bleach all the problems out, get rid of the color. How she just wants sleep is showing how she's given up on life.
