Sevendust – Rumble Fish Lyrics 14 years ago
I'm pretty positive he doesn't say "Step down on the slivering snake," nor does he say "Step down on the slivering stake." Instead, and doesn't it make SO much more lyrical sense, that he's saying, "Step down on the *sliTHering sNake?"

KoЯn – Camel Song Lyrics 14 years ago
Two things:

One, I think that there are several interpretations that can be made about the title - you've all begun them.

And two, I wonder if perhaps the "superstar" confusion might come from an edited version of the song. Perhaps it was even left vaguely between "shit you are" and "superstar," kind of like Disturbed did with "Down With the Sickness" (disguising a certain F-word as a guttural grunt).

The Gathering – Liberty Bell Lyrics 14 years ago
It sounds simply like it's about astronauts going up into space. The astronauts' dialogue at the end (someone care to transcribe it here?) would indicate such, especially with the last note, "O-2 is alright."

But the beauty of it...oh, how exciting! I just wonder why it's actually called "Liberty Bell." Maybe the bell-shape of the engines on the tail that reach the "superheat?" And the "liberty" that the launch brings?

Any other interpretations of this popular Gathering song?

Evergrey – Misled Lyrics 15 years ago
I think this is the narrator's discovery of waking up in a hospital, strapped down like he's crazy, and he's being operated upon in a way eerily similar to what the Visitors did to him. Nobody believes him, and now he's not sure if he even WAS abducted or not...but something brought him here, and now he's "crawling back to sleep," because that's just about all he CAN do at this point.

Poor guy!

Opeth – Hessian Peel Lyrics 16 years ago
I'm surprised nobody is asking about the Hessian reference. The Hessians, of course, were the German soldiers who fought in the American Revolutionary War...one of which lost his head in the New York town of Sleepy Hollow, from a stray cannonball...and later inspired a certain story...

Antimatter – Mr White Lyrics 16 years ago
Well, it's a cover of the doom metal band Trouble's song "Mr. White," but as for it's meaning...loneliness is obvious, but I'm not sure about "Mr. White...hiding in my room." That's kind of a creepy image. Any ideas?

Deftones – Xerces Lyrics 17 years ago
I think it should also be kept close in mind that Xerxes (with an "x," not a "c") was the leader of the Persian empire. Yes, the very same Xerxes portrayed so oddly in Frank Miller's 300. I wonder if there was some kind of connection between him and the title of this song?

Voivod – Gasmask Revival Lyrics 17 years ago
Riots. Definitely a tongue-in-cheek "hey, let's join (or start) a riot!" song. Donning a gasmask will just help avoid inhaling the tear gas, and thus you'll be okay.

Oops, "I got hit by a rock on the head, and now I'm seeing red." Hehe.

One of the most straightforward songs...well, ever. Especially from Voivod!

Dark Tranquillity – Emptier Still Lyrics 17 years ago
The electronic pulses and really distant-sounding vocals really give a feeling of distance, of a forever-lost existence in eternal void of solitude. And yes, while it is much like a conversation with one's demon, this "post-void" feeling really makes it seem like the person in question has "turned down...a choice...forever," and now they are stuck with their hidden despair.

...I think this is the first Dark Tranquillity song I've fully understood. At the very least, it's one hell of an emotional and musical ride.

Dark Tranquillity – Zodijackyl Light Lyrics 17 years ago
Well, if anyone can say what "Zodijackyl" means, perhaps we can start a good, thorough analysis of the song's possible meaning(s).

The way it's pronounced, actually, makes the first part sound similar to "Zodiac" - which would make sense (you know, the Zodiac, stars, light...).

Now that I have the obvious info out of the way...

Mudvayne – Severed Lyrics 17 years ago
I *know* this isn't what he says, but I swear, during the part where he says, "Come on, step out," etc., it sounds like he's saying "Gummo, step out," etc. Gummo was one of the Marx Brothers, the four- (and later three-) comedian team from the 1920's-1940's, but he quit before they started making movies and was subsequently replaced by Zeppo. I just think it would have been really interesting had Chad been referring to someone so obscure, and telling them to "step out." Too bad that's not what he said...

Okay, end of blurb.

Stone Sour – Get Inside Lyrics 17 years ago
Good lord, does anyone on this site even use it for what it's ABOUT? I came here trying to find out what this song is about, and instead I see all this "Slipknot sucks," "Stone Sour sucks," "dude, what the fuck is wrong with you, Corey Taylor is better in blah-blah-blah..." Seriously people, get your acts together! This is about SONG MEANINGS. Not bitching and ranting.

Now, would anyone care to explain their thoughts about what this song is ABOUT?

To start, I can detect a lot of serious anger and hostility towards someone in it. The defensive "Don't pretend that you understand me, I don't even want you looking at me" sums up a lot. However, I think this song must have a deeper meaning than "fuck you, leave me alone." Thoughts??

Nevermore – Ophidian Lyrics 17 years ago
I wonder why this is called "Ophidian?" Ophidian means of or relating to serpents or snakes, but as far as I can tell, there is nothing serpentine about this track (except the way it slithers into your senses).

The Gathering – Golden Grounds Lyrics 18 years ago
At first this...ALMOST sounds like being trapped in the middle of a desert (and not just because of the sand and sun references, but the "One more day," "Hold on my saviour" bits seem a bit desparate and goal-oriented). I'm not sure what the last section is about, however...I don't think a piece of my mind would taste that good, anyway!

Opeth – Advent Lyrics 18 years ago
I get the feeling of travelling through the night, on into the morning. This is especially clear with the line, "Time grows short/ As the piper plays his time." The Piper, say, at the Gates of Dawn? And the title of the song, "Advent" - it means, quite literally, "arrival." And since there's so much "I" and "you" reference in the song, I get the feeling that the narrator is wandering with someone else through the night...and I gather that there's some kind of problem hanging over their heads, some kind of sorrow or regret, but I can't make much more sense out of the song. Any ideas or suggestions?

Morbid Angel – Where the Slime Live Lyrics 18 years ago
Well, maybe not *Christians,* not necessarily. Probably Catholicism, which is much more corrupt and deserves more resentment. Awesome title, I think; instead of "Where the Slime Live*S*", it's plural. I think it's an excellent use of pluralization and metaphors. And besides everything else, PlanetarumVagatio, they're a metal band. Ever think maybe they're just writing "evil" lyrics to help fit their image, and not "continuing a 2000 year old tradition?"

Isis – Backlit Lyrics 18 years ago
This almost seems like questions to higher beings above. The artwork of _Panopticon_ seems to focus on grand overhead views of the world, so the lyrics are verymuch hand-in-hand. Maybe the album's a sort of "themed concept album," focusing on the world from above? How wonderfully amorphous, much like the music itself.

Tiamat – The Ar Lyrics 19 years ago
I'm not entirely sure what the whole song is about, but I do know that the exact quote "The five-pointed grey star carven" is taken from the fake Necronomicon, as a reference to H.P. Lovecraft's (or rather, more likely August Derleth's) mention of the Ar.

See it for yourself: http://cody.mysteria.cz/knihovna/necronomicon/simon/!necro3.htm

Nevermore – 42147 Lyrics 19 years ago
"The experiment"--wait, stop there. I think that might be exactly what this song is about: an experiment of sorts. Perhaps the administering of drugs to a patient playing guinea pig, from the views of both an outsider ("What have I created?" and the patient themselves ("Through my mind")? As for the title, maybe that is the experiment's number.

Who knows. Warrel Dane is good at writing very esoteric, yet highly inspiring, lyrics.

Morbid Angel – Where the Slime Live Lyrics 19 years ago
Well firstly, it's "Where the Slime Live." Not "lives." But on to the actual song...

This is obviously (yet another) anti-Faith-themed song. "The slime" are the Christians and all other believers in the Faith, and so from there it's easy to figure out what it's about. "Their poison fingers that wrote the poison lies" - how they wrote the Bible, etc. This whole song is about the eventualy takeover and destruction of the slime, although "they'll come again someday." I especially like how Dave Vincent taunts them when he says, verbally, "And what a tragedy-HAH!-when the 'god-heads' are removed." The effects on Vincent's voice on this song are also especially effective; he sounds like he's underwater, and he IS singing about "the slime." Yet another dark, gruesome, wonderful song from this very brave and well-intentioned band.

What the hell is all this?! Hitler? Nazis? Homosexuality? Good lord, this is worse than (but just as amusing as) the fools who think that "Nights in White Satin" is about the KKK. Morbid Angel – Bil Ur-Sag Lyrics 19 years ago
Mmm, I don't think it was based on Lovecraft, per se, but rather on the pseudo-Sumerian mythology upon which Lovecraft was also influenced. Remember, although Trey Azagthoth was influenced by the so-called Necronomicon, that book is not actually real (read the liner notes to Nile's new album, "Annihilation of the Wicked" for a complete explanation of this).

Katatonia – Ghost Of The Sun Lyrics 19 years ago
I'm really not quite sure what the WHOLE song is about, but I figure from the choruses a broken relationship is a part of it.

Interesting note: Jonas Renske mentions "The city of glass that I live in." Perhaps more than a coincidence that the instrumental closing track on the album is called "Inside the City of Glass"?

The Gathering – Sand and Mercury Lyrics 19 years ago
This song appears to have four main parts to it: the instrumental main theme, then these two passages of tragic and moving last words from on the death bed of a lover, followed by two codas: an instrumental one, and a sample of J.R.R. Tolkien speaking about life and death.

Opeth – Deliverance Lyrics 19 years ago
I think one of the most important questions to ask about this song is not what is it about, but *why.*

Why would the narrator drown somebody? Just look at the third and fourth verses: "received no warning/from nothing to a life code". A life code? As in...pregnancy, perhaps?

One could make many interpretations of this song (and, indeed, all songs by Opeth). In this case, I feel like the narrator is talking about a woman who has become pregnant, and so he drowns her. Who's child? His own, perhaps, but more likely somebody else's - why else kill her?

What a dark, beautiful, haunting, epic song. It single-handedly got me into the band.

I agree, Nolan. He might actually be saying "fucking," but it sounds...*gasp*...censored! However, that makes no sense, because A--there's not a clean version of this album (it's just one version), and B--just listen to the beginning of "Friends," he screams, "Hey mama? CAN'T YOU SEE I'M FUCKING COOKING?!" So...yeah, it's hard to tell what is up with that.

Mudvayne – -1 Lyrics 19 years ago
KiLLOggS-- when you say that you hate the term "normal," that's quite what Chad is saying in this song. There is no such thing as "normal" - there is only a certain perspective of standards which people set for and of themselves, and if someone feels like they're less than that "norm", as opposed to above it (i.e. they're not "+", they're "-"), they feel like their life amounts to the proverbial nothing. In other words, if one does not exceed their standards of what a "normal" life is what they believe to be, they are negative. In Chad's beautiful, poetic imagination, a life could be at "-1."
