Gregory Alan Isakov – The Stable Song Lyrics 8 years ago
@[jabarhead:6960] I agree with your assessment, but with one specific addition: I believe this is about an engagement that never came to fruition, i.e. marriage. The references to "ring like silver, ring like gold," "wedding bells," and "turn these diamonds straight back into coal" really paint a picture. The engagement ended and he's grief-stricken, so he goes on a heavy drinking binge and self-reflects. When he's on the other side of that binge, he can see things more clearly and is ready to move on.

The Stills – Gender Bombs Lyrics 12 years ago
It's definitely "the guilt will scar you." Though, it does seem like he changes it slightly towards the end of the repetition.

I think it's a song about cheating.

Iron & Wine – Rabbit Will Run Lyrics 12 years ago
I believe it's "the colt hasn't long with the mare" as in, the child doesn't have a long time to spend with his mother. (Colt is a baby male horse.) It makes sense since he says "last I saw mother" which implies he doesn't see her anymore. Once a colt separates from its mother, the relationship is over for life.

Also, each comparison of animals to the rabbit shows how the other animal is either inferior or superior. Rabbits run freely, but colts stick with their mothers -- which I think is hinting at the brief period of innocence this man had.

Band of Horses – The Funeral Lyrics 13 years ago
THANK YOU for that informative link! In the interview he also mentioned that, like most BoH songs, it does go off-tangent a bit and may be deeper than just not enjoying social gatherings. But clearly, that's the original point of the song.

I have to wonder if he twisted the lyrics a bit to refer to an actual funeral, though. "I'm coming up only to hold you under" is like he is choosing to attend the funeral as a final farewell (just being at the funeral is the admitting of death and achieving closure), thus, holding the deceased under ground. "We wait for morning to wake you": The mourning of the deceased often turns into the "wake" or rebirth of that person's soul in the memories of the living.

The Kooks – Sway Lyrics 14 years ago
After reading the comments, it makes sense that it's about Max. However, he is blurring the lines a bit so it can either relate to their audience or to other issues in his own life (love, etc.). It's a heart wrenching song, with pleading and desperation in his voice -- especially in the chorus, which is so direct it's almost vague.

It took me a while to get the "sway" line, but now I know. This person's sway (coolness, talent, style) gave them much-needed inspiration and he added that sway to the band itself. But sway often comes with it's own demons -- some of the most talented artists are often the most tortured. Thus, he always pays for it. Still...

The Ataris – Ben Lee Lyrics 20 years ago
Wow, it's so sad when "artists" have to demote themselves to high school bickering. This pathetic guy has a f-n CRUSH on Claire Danes, and has to write a song bashing HER boyfriend!! OMG, what a f-n LOSER!! I can't believe this verrrry crappy band has a following at all. But, then again, untalented and unimaginative lyrics/music attracts a stupid and generic audience. Which the world has plenty of. Look at Britney Spears and her fans. Same thing here.

Oh, yeah, this band is NOT punk, just so ya know, kiddies. As much as you don't want to admit it, it is 100% mainstream pop. And, "boys of summer?" Do any of the fans even know who Black Flag is? How about BEFORE the song came out. Didn't think so...

Keep those MTV checks flowing, Ataris!! Oh, and say hi to Dre and Snoop, cuz you know them so well...right??
