i believe this song has a very optimistic tone to it...like, it doesn't matter what material possessions you have, all that matters is if you enjoy your life. and when things go wrong, sometimes you just have to take time to turn your face to the sun and enjoy the warmth, and not worry about your problems. i think there's also a little story in this song, like how the singer has a guy that she wants to make love her, but he's such a pessimist he focuses on the raw, sad things in life instead of "looking up". and he focuses a lot on material things- "To buy the things it'd take

i think this is a song about a guy and a girl in a relationship and the girl wants the guy to be serious when she's mad at him, but he's just the goofy type of fellow and cant. and he sings this song to her, with all its silly references and nonsensical phrases, to help her understand how he finds everything funny and what kind of stupid stuff is running through his head constantly. and at the end of the song they make up.

this song is very sweet and loving. but it kinda takes away the specialness of it when you realize that elton is most likely singing to his boyfriend, not a woman. (not that i'm against that, it just takes away the magic a little bit. you usually picture a man singing to a woman, is all.) |

i think of my friends and i when i hear this song. we're young, but not too young, and almost ready to try and make something of ourselves in the world but not sure how to do it. i think this song is about just that- a young girl wanting to come into her own and striving for independence, but a little uncertain and scared. i myself feel a little disheartened when i hear this song; it frightens me to think of the perils that are hiding around every corner in life, but it also excites me to think that soon, i will hopefully build up the strength, stamina and wisdom necessary for robbing those perils of their power over my life. wow that was deep lol |

i absolutely relate to this song, and it's good to know some other people can too. i always feel misunderstood in my actions, impatient, and sensitive to people "picking on me" (my sweater's on backwards and inside out and you say how appropriate.) all some people want is to be understood; to have somebody that they can really connect with. like alanis sings, "and i really want to meet a kindred". how wonderful would it be to find someone you could really talk to who could actually relate? when i first heard this song, i felt like i was hearing myself for the first time. |

screw the whole "i hate this emo punk rock stuff"!
