Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – O Children Lyrics

Well... I'm not sure if there is/what the deeper meaning is, but I'm pretty sure that on the surface, he's saying to the next generation: "Death is the only escape from this shitty life we've left for you." |

Iron & Wine – Sodom, South Georgia Lyrics

To me, he's saying that people die, but life goes on. (Sodom wakes and Sodom sleeps, regardless of his father's death. His baby girl is born on the day of his death.) And despite, or perhaps because of, this notion, individuals try to find meaning in their lives in God. |

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Where the Wild Roses Grow (feat. Kylie Minogue) Lyrics
| 19 years ago

Vocal performances are great, and the last few stanzas are lovely and disconcerting. Which is the great thing about Nick Cave - he begins the song having the listener think it's a mushy ballad with lyrics straight from a romance novel ("From the first day I saw her I knew she was the one," "My trembling subsided in his sure embrace") and it ends with him killing her. Genius!
If I had to be critical, I would say that the chorus could have been changed. I understand he's going for a "Gaelic tale" effect here, but it sounds so awkward and redundant.
I love that "wind light as a thief" line. That is such an unexpected simile, I think. |

Dido – Don't Think of Me Lyrics

catherineks, LOL! Yeah, I like Alanis Morisette, but that song grates on my nerves after listening to it for awhile. This song is good, and the lyrics are cleaner, but I think Dido's voice is rather blank here and better suited for haunting songs - she doesn't convey her anger very well. |

Weezer – Across The Sea Lyrics

Rivers called Pinkerton "sick" and "diseased", I think. He should keep on coming out with sick and diseased music, then. He's at his best when he's on painkillers. Pinkerton is the album with the most lyrical depth, and "Across the Sea" is one of the best tracks, if not the best, on the album. Maladroit's lyrics are just vague and nonsensical. |

Aimee Mann – Pavlov's Bell Lyrics
|
I have no concrete idea what this song means, but I'll speculate. Pavlov was a Russian psychologist who worked with conditioning dogs, and eventually got the dogs to salivate without feeding them by ringing a bell. I'm guessing that this song is about a couple in the Great Depression, and they're traveling to the West to find work (a la Grapes of Wrath). "Pavlov's bell" signals the call of fortune, that beckons everyone to come.
Of course, I could be completely wrong. I just thought the references to Idaho and "trading clothes" might be about a time of the past. Anyhow, this song rocks! |

Aimee Mann – Just Like Anyone Lyrics

I think I heard that Aimee wrote this song about her friend, Jeff Buckley, who committed suicide. I love this song. It's quietly plaintive and contemplative. And she doesn't try to portray her feelings as noble or great - she's "just like anyone" who has lost a friend to suicide. It's soothing to those who have undergone a similar experience. |
