Tool – Sober Lyrics 19 years ago
Let's consider that this song is about sex. Rather than being "sober" from alcohol, it could mean from the sexual urge.

In the first verse he talks about this urge. "Every promise empty" as in empty promises to women. The urge haunts him like a "stalking butler" that makes him do all sorts of sleazy things.

In the second verse, he warns others against himself while he is under the influence of this urge. This is evident in every single line of the verse. Especially so in "I will find a center in you" -- straight up innuendo right there. "I will chew it up and leave" refers to one night stands. "I will work to elevate you just enough to bring you down" -- again, get the girl emotionally worked up just to get sex and leave her upset.

That being said, the references to Jesus and Mary make perfect sense. Christianity places an emphasis in chasity, further personifying the speaker's sexual urge as a demon. In other words, faith places a guilt on the speaker.

"Murder now the path called 'must we' just before the son has come" -- sex is something "we must" do, are we supposed to give it up in the name of Christianity, just because the son has come?

"Jesus won't you fucking whistle" -- whistle and ignore the promiscuity, to being indifferent to it rather than condemn it.

Pearl Jam – I Am a Patriot Lyrics 20 years ago
"Because my country is all I know" does not refer to blind patriotism, but the feeling of the speaker that America is the only place with comfort for him.

Check the following line:
"I want to be with my family, people who understand me..."
He's seen the rest of the world and it's shit, because people think differently and are not in accord with his way of life. He's got "no place else to go" not because he physically can't get there or doesn't know of it, but because America is the only place he can be happy.

Best. Song. Ever. Hands. Down.

Pearl Jam has a tone too closely related to old-school rock and roll to make them dependent on Nirvana, Mothra.

I think the lyrics speak for themself as far as meaning. One of the best songs of all time.

Incubus – Make Yourself Lyrics 20 years ago
This is an awesome song in every way, second in Incubus' arsenal only to "Pardon Me" in my opinion. The urge to resist peer pressure and be you're own person was never made so eloquent.

"Hear you on the radio"
"Permeate my screen"

Could also refer to pretentious celebrities.

I don't see how this song could be directed at Bush, but that seems to be the answer everyone jumps to. It was the same way in the APC section of this site: can't figure out the meaning? Hell it must be about Bush! I mean, give it a rest.

It makes sense that this is directed to someone personal, rather than any political or historical figure. If you've ever met someone ridiculously arrogant, especially someone with achievements to back them up (although that does not validaye arrogance), you'd feel the meaning of this song.

This is just a followup to "Pet." I don't believe it has any particular meaning unto itself, aside from the subject literally falling asleep as the music fades out.

I like the suicide theory by ObsessiveTendencies. He counts to ten and hesitates. The background dialogue and laughing that follows could be his life flashing before his eyes before the end.

A Perfect Circle – Vanishing Lyrics 20 years ago
Unlike some of the other songs, I doubt this one has some political meaning, nor does it refer to a story or event. It is pure art.

Of course, the subject--what is "disappearing"--could be a lost friend or the like.

One may notice that he refers to the girl as "she" in the third person, which would suggest that "you" is someone else, ergo her lover. "While I sit and stare at you" could mean that the lover is next to be killed by the speaker.

"Such a lovely color for you"
In that line he addresses the man with whom she had an affair. He was angry at the events, killed her, and now presents her back to him with this cryptic and sarcastic remark. It's like saying "Here, you can have her now" after he killed her.

I think this song refers to a girl that he loved who was having an affair, possible with someone who was also his friend.

"I just didn't want to know"
"Ignore the smoke and smile"
He may have known something wish fishy, veiled in "smoke" but choose to ignore it.

"Mistook their nods for an approval"
This is my biggest hint for the affair, rather than a drug addiction or suicide, which are also good theories. He may have seen the two together, saw them "nodding" at each other, and thought it was just being friendly while they were actually nodding to affirm what they may had been doing the night before.

As for the turning blue part, I have no doubt that she's dying or dead. He himself may have killed her when he finally came to realize what was going on.

I think this song addresses successful people, especially those seemingly all well and good. It charges them with what shit or evil they had to pull to get such status, that which would condemn them if anyone knew. That is why their "halo" that most the world perceieves will slip down to "choke them" on judgement day.

Probably the best song on the album, BTW.

This one is pretty obvious: an attack on "drama queens" and "suicidal imbeciles". Although in my experience, it's more or less the APC-type fans who are melodramatic about cutting themselves, not Good Charlotte. Haha.

A Perfect Circle – Judith Lyrics 20 years ago
I don't know if this has been stated, but the Judith in the bible was actually a Hebrew woman (the name literally means "female Jew") who deceived the general of an invading army, got into his bed and cut his head off, resulting in the invading Assyrians to retreat. She was not a traitor, as some have suggested, but a loyal servant of God who saved her country.

Since the song is entitled "Judith" although that name is never mentioned in the lyrics, we can assume that APC is actually addressing her. They are taunting her, criticizing her resolve, as it was not easy to accomplish what she did in the face of her people being slaughtered, and Israel's fate seemingly being an act of God.

This is not APC's necessarily showing contempt for the faithful, though, as the taunting may be simply an artistic notion with no real point.

Actually, if he dedicated it to Bush, that makes it pretty obvious.

It definitely refers to a parent's protection, but I'm not sure the tone is necessarily criticizing. He may actually be wishful in protecting whomever he feels innocent from all the issues of the world. It is also a good theory, however, that he is speaking out against the government, and all that was previously stated here. I'm guessing the song was written too early to refer to the specific War in Iraq, though.
