Yeah, absolutely one of the best songs ever. Everything's already been said but basically it's a teenager who's worried that his carefree days of just being happy with his friends and not having to care about anything he doesn't want to care about are going to end soon. It couldn't describe my life more perfectly. I can't imagine anything more beautiful than a sweet, hot suburban summer evening when everything in your life is just right. And hey, maybe we can make it last.
And to whoever said this song amplifies your mood - definitely. It can make you the happiest kid in the world or make you want to cry your eyes out. |

Aw man, what a song. The first song ever to make me cry. It has one of the most astonishing set of lyrics I've ever seen. "Skyscrapers are scraping together" and "you were right about the stars, each one is a setting sun" stand out as two particularly amazing phrases, but really the whole thing is unbelievable. All this coupled with a beautiful melody and that heart-tugging violin. This will always remind me of warm summer nights. The sequence on YHF of Jesus Etc - Ashes Of American Flags - Heavy Metal Drummer is arguably the best three-song sequence I've heard. |

This is an amazing song. It actually sounds like the singer's crying most of the time. The last verse (from 'i wanna say good luck' on) is just gutwrenching. The Wrens write the best breakup songs! |

I think the band's music scares most people off! Not me though; Fabulous Muscles is a very compelling album with a seriously dark undertow. This is probably my favourite song on it because I think it's the most properly realised thing they've done. |

I love this song. I can relate to it so much these days - I'm 18 and just about to go off to uni, and I'll really miss all my friends from school when I'm away. I made a mix CD for one of my best friends and this was the last track; it just goes so perfectly. |

This is such an incredibly sad song. Basically I see it as being about nostalgia and never being able to go back to your youth, and how people just change when they get older. Glad I'm still 17! The imagery is gorgeous, especially the 'every streetlight...' line. My favourite line is probably 'September's coming soon' - the music and lyrics just come together at that moment to evoke the EXACT feeling of sadness and overwhelming emotion when you realise that summer's almost over. Except I think that in the protagonist's case, it's also a metaphor for the summer of his youth ending. |

The way I see this song, it's about someone (maybe real or not) who always maintains a cocky, arrogant attitude on the outer level, but is actually pretty insecure under the surface. I think the line "ask me what it's like to have myself so figured out... I wish I knew" reflects this - everyone thinks that this guy is really confident, not realising that he's as confused as anyone else about who he really is. |
