Taking Back Sunday – You Know How I Do Lyrics 17 years ago
I met Fred Mascherino at All Good Music Festival, we hit it off and he came back to my tent and we smoked a decent amount of marijuana. I remembered this song and asked about it, he said yes it is about Adam's drug use but he later realized he was being a pussy and tried it himself, regrets having wrote this now.

Pink Floyd – Summer '68 Lyrics 17 years ago
I was coming down from a mushroom trip, and heard this song for the first time, and was absolutely blown away by how exactly it described the moment. I was reading about it on wikipedia, which says "The song can also be interpreted as the metaphorical thoughts of someone returning from a magic mushroom trip, which typically last about 6 hours."

I'd agree.

Feist – Mushaboom Lyrics 18 years ago
The name "mushaboom" is very interesting, considering psychedelic mushrooms are also called 'boomers'. Broken Social Scene has a lot of psychedelic influences but it really doesn't apply to this song, although it certainly through me for a loop when I first heard it.

I had never heard these kids before and I saw them live at Bonnaroo at the Which stage. They were really good, and I picked up their albums, but they aren't as good as their live performances. So if you're a fan, I guess make it a point to go see their concerts.

Donovan – Mellow Yellow Lyrics 18 years ago
As for anybody wondering about the bananas, it really cannot get you high. It's a joke on people who would be desperate enough to try it, same with orange juice and toothpaste. The joke is obviously successful at getting naive people to try it.

"Mellow Yellow" is slang for acid. I can't speak for 14 and Saffron, I don't know if they're LSD too, but Electrical Banana is a reference to "electric kool-aid", well-known slang of the 60s for LSD from the Electric Kool-Aid Acid Tests.

Meat Loaf – Wasted Youth Lyrics 19 years ago
"I remember every little thing as if it happened only yesterday" is also the first line of Paradise By The Dashboard Lights, and "barely seventeen" is also a part of that song. These parallels show the two best attributes of youth, sex and rebellion.

The meaning, not quite sure if there is a real one, but the Lips get to rocking pretty damn hard during this song, so unlike their trance-inducing music nowadays.

The Flaming Lips – Suddenly Everything Has Changed Lyrics 19 years ago
Its so simple of a song, of just how a minor moment contains a thought that just rocks your whole life, and I love how the sound starts to tear up each time it says "and suddenly everything has changed"

I think this is one of the only songs on Zaireeka where one CD by itself is still a good song (CD one). If you've got your 4 stereos, this song can change so much just by toying with the volumes of the different sets.

The Flaming Lips – The Spark That Bled Lyrics 19 years ago
It feels an awful lot like a pessimistic/satirical view of religion. I don't know if the bleeding is supposed to represent being damaged by it all, but the rest fits into saying something like 'religion isn't real, but that doesn't mean its a bad thing.' The confidence of knowing part could be saying that to help calm ourselves in our live and the struggle to know its meaning. Coming from above and below might be about heaven and hell, as two parts of religion where its sort of based in. Then there's the chain reaction stanza, saying how it got more popular, and everyone joined in, and everybody is holding on to something that's not actually there.

I don't agree with the meaning I'm getting out of this, but its still awesome.

The Flaming Lips – Gingerale Afternoon (The Astrology of a Saturday) Lyrics 19 years ago
Its not entirely about drugs, of course. It makes me think of the times when I first started doing drugs, and it would always be my best buddy and I getting high at his house, in his room, in summer, with his mom at work. Then we'd get out and roam the neighborhood, eating at burger king. Whole song gives off this nostalgic feel like thinking back to those days does. 'Gingerale afternoon' is just so perfect sounding a label for those kinds of days.

The Flaming Lips – Do You Realize?? Lyrics 19 years ago
I see it with cspotrun, and I think people are really overlooking that part. I think its a key point of the song. Its not about hey, life is once, so make the most of it. Instead of saying goodbye to all the friends who die, realize that like the sun, they've just gone away for a while. Maybe he's saying its reincarnation, maybe he's saying its something else.

The Flaming Lips – Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Pt. 1 Lyrics 19 years ago
I've got a live recording of them performing this song for a private show, and beforehand, Wayne talks about the song. Since I'm supposed to be working on a project, I'll summarize what he says, since its a long story.
When they record songs in the studio, they are doing things really fast and just laying down a lot of tracks, and the part two actually came first. They were recording it with a girl named Yoshimi (she's the screaming girl), from a Japenese band The Boredoms. They were giving it a bunch of "silly joke titles", and Wayne just came up with Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots, since she screams a lot and "it sounds like this horrible machine is either trying to kill her or have sex with her or something like that". The Lips had also been working on a "melancholy melody" they hadn't really gotten very far on yet, for about a year. The line "Yoshimi, they don't believe me" popped up from Wayne from the title, and he started coming up with this whole story that didn't have much to do with Part Two. He says that the Yoshimi in the song isn't related to the real one at all, her name was just excellent for rhyming.
He goes on to say how the track version has a very uplifting feel to it, that she will undoubtedly win the battle, and they then play a version of the song where she probably won't win. Its really awesome.

The Flaming Lips – Evil Will Prevail Lyrics 19 years ago
I can't accept that a song this amazing is about something as small as the Oklahoma City Bombing.

I feel like it might be about religion. Millions of happy, loving people joined together, knowing and accepting that evil prevails. I dunno, kind of hard to describe what I'm trying to say. Song just makes me really think of everything the yin-yang represents. Loving people balancing the necessary evil.

The Flaming Lips – Feeling Yourself Disintegrate Lyrics 19 years ago
I think it flows well from The Gash, but its kind of hard to explain shortly, because it was a complicated trip, but in the shortest version possible, in The Gash, a man faded into his own imagination, and then discovered that that's all life was, this cycle of his own mind, and he was the only real human, if he indeed was real. So, Feeling Yourself Disintegrate fits perfectly. His denial is weakening (how can I live without love, when I'm the only person; how does my life exist without death?), but then he just succumbs into his mind (feeling himself disintegrate).

The Flaming Lips – What Is the Light? Lyrics 19 years ago
Looking back, I still believe its about love, but not about a specific person. More like love is something emanating from all of us, and is drawing us all in and surrounding us. But is it merely a chemical thing, or something even grander?

The Flaming Lips – Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Pt. 1 Lyrics 19 years ago
In my opinion, most Lips songs don't really have set meanings (although all the songs on the Yoshimi album are incredibly straight-forward), and are completely open to personal interpretation. (Hallucinogens + Flaming Lips = Marvelousness)

The Presidents of the United States of America – Peaches Lyrics 19 years ago
if this song truely is about pussy, and I think it is (sure, a song can have deep meaning, but let's be serious. When for some reason I had to write a paper summarizing The Princess Diaries in English class (no kidding, 11th grade was slack), I went intensely out of my way to construe that it was an analogy for World War 2, and did a good job making it fit. That doesn't mean its about that at all, you can make anything about anything if you try hard enough), in 5th grade, which was when the song came out, our class always sang it in unison randomly. Now I wonder if the teacher had any idea of the song's meaning, because we sure didn't.

Cat Stevens – Ghost Town Lyrics 19 years ago
Also, the last stanza is a reference to the popular myth that Walt Disney, founder of Disney, was cryogenically frozen, so he's not truly dead, just in suspended animation. This isn't true of course, but here Keaton and Tut are waiting for him to wake up from his freezing, and he's not gonna make it to the ghost town that way.

Cat Stevens – Ghost Town Lyrics 19 years ago
I think this song is a cheerful look at the afterlife (although I don't get a lot of the references, because they are before my time), talking about all the good times you'll have with all these famous people who have passed on already. Hence the "Ghost Town", town of ghosts.

Cat Stevens – Father And Son Lyrics 19 years ago
I think its about neither Father or Son understanding each other as well as they think they do, and both of them getting the messages wrong. The Father keeps telling the Son to relax and settle his life down, but the Son doesn't want his Father's life (which his Father can't see) and gets angry when he feels like his Father isn't listening to what he wants in life.

Cat Stevens – 18th Avenue (Kansas City Nightmare) Lyrics 19 years ago
It sounds like 18th avenue was a dark part of his past, when he did a lot of things wrong in his life. Its hard to go back there, and its a painful memory "to repeat the words That I used to use only yesterday". Its also hard on him to believe he ever did the things he did there ("I tried to remember what I thought And what I used to say "), and the people he remembers from the 18th avenue are all empty reminders of his past now.

I really love listening to music written during the Vietnam War these days, because it fits in once again with the state of our country and the war in Iraq. That, and its a much calmer anti-war message, unlike ours today.

Cat Stevens – The Wind Lyrics 19 years ago
I think the song is about Cat finding contentment in God. A lot of his music was about death and religion, but this song i feel is about how all that is behind him.

I listen to the wind
to the wind of my soul

He's finally listening just to what his soul is telling him, and ignoring the misleadings of the world around him.

Where I'll end up well I think
only God really knows

the second line of this is a just a standard phrase for not knowing, but here it means that truly only God knows, and he's putting his trust in that.

I've sat upon the setting sun
but never, never never never
I never wanted water once
no never, never, never

Now that he's at peace, even sitting on the sun doesn't make him cry out for water, which I'm guessing means giving in to temptations of life.

I listen to my words but
they fall far below
I let the my music take me where
my heart wants to go

His music has helped him get this far in it all.

I swam upon the devil's lake
but never, never never never
I'll never make the same mistake

Pretty clear here, he's put aside the dark things he did in his past, and he'll never return to them.

Cat Stevens – Sitting Lyrics 19 years ago
I love this song, but until just now, I didn't get the line "I feel the power growing In my hair " and it always confused me. I think that line is about the passage of time, and the power of death coming with it. His hair grows longer over time, and its a visual reminder that life is ticking away.

Even though the actual music in this song seems really simplistic to me, I love it. You can never forget your first love, no matter how it went. Reminds me of my first love, who I met in the 3rd grade, when we had the same babysitter, and all of us kids there would always just play make believe things.

King Snake, that line in the song does refer to that bible verse, but its not about the Bible. Its alluding to when the times change, things will be better, and those on the low now will be on high.

This song is awesome, and it still fits today, which is even in the song:
"And don't speak too soon
For the wheel's still in spin"

Relient K – Breakdown Lyrics 19 years ago
I'm starting to look at this, and maybe the 'he' referred to is not Satan at all, but God. Instead of the song about not giving in to Satan, which sounds so generic of Christian rock, but maybe its about being angry at God, and on the verge of just giving up on Him. But he's also saying he won't let the problems that happen in life get to him, he won't breakdown and give up on God, he won't take the easy way, away from him.

Saves the Day – Firefly Lyrics 19 years ago
Great song, and absolutely just a simple song about getting wasted and fucking, despite what everyone tries to read into it. However, I just hate the last part of the song. Right after the confess what's in my head line, the song goes downhill and makes me change it. If they could have held the song up instead of just practically stopping and having Chris cry for a minute, this song would be perfect.

Phish – Dirt Lyrics 19 years ago
I never even thought about death for this song. To me, it always seemed like a song about deep depression. You want to just stay away from the world, and you don't want to go anywhere or do anything. Down in the dirt you can't be affected by anyone.

Oasis – Champagne Supernova Lyrics 19 years ago
I know there's no real meaning, but here's what I always got out of it. This song always came across to me as a song about a friend who died while you were getting high. She died sort of nearby, and if everyone who was smoking had been paying attention to where she went, they would have been able to save her. They keep asking (where was she while we were getting high?) Their lives are all shaken up and they're all filled with guilt for the rest of their days (How many special people change? How many lives are living strange?). This song is a kind of looking back about it, and denying (But you and I will never die ) and wishing against her death (A dreamer dreams, she never dies). The champagne supernova is heaven, where'll they'll meet again, but he'll still feel covered by the guilt, even in heaven (Caught beneath the landslide). Finally, for those of us who smoke, the slowly-down-the-hall/faster-cannonball is about the feeling in your mind and body when you all rushed in too late to save her, like you're floating in slow-motion, or your body is moving faster than your mind can keep pace.

I think Storm&Stress is absolutely right. No matter how obvious a meaning to a Lips song is, it changes to something completely and radically different under the influence of any drug.
