| I think it's about how power corrupts. Someone who used to be good hearted but has risen to power and in the course of that has become evil. "Go ascend with ivy climbing..." is his parents+friends telling him(her) to make something of himself and leave them behind. Once he has risen and is causing destruction and evil his mother is crying at what he has become, and he's laughing at her, because she is the one who started him on the path to greatness in the first place. Later on is where the histories are being written of his life, and he has them amended, so later generations won't know his evil. He's looking back on his life and wishing it had been better, and trying to alter the memory ppl have of him by his actions in his final days and changing what is written about him. the final line "Omnipotence, nuturing malevolence" means that when you can do anything you want, you are more likely to do evil, because no one will stop you. it kind of sums up the whole story. I think of this as like a medieval fantasy story, its one of a couple major plotlines used to various degrees of cheesiness in modern fantasy writing. | |
