Rammstein – Mann Gegen Mann (English) Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Lateralus518, if you're weirded out by the lyrics, you should see the video. Personally, I think this is a very clever song. |
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Brother, My Cup Is Empty Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I often find that the second verse is just haunting. "To see her accusing finger spurt/ To see flies swarm her hateful eye", etc. Gives me goosebumps every time. |
Rammstein – Mann Gegen Mann (English) Lyrics | 17 years ago |
That's the reason I translated "Herr" as "lord", so that the meaning of "our Lord God" would be half-way preserved, at least It really is difficult to translate all the wordplays, but I tried my best... The discussion in the thread with the German lyrics seems to have established that "Schwulah" is what the official lyrics say. That just seems a bit odd to me :) Oh, and I hope that the wordplay of "man against man" doesn't escape the English-speaking audience, as cheeza4u already pointed out. |
Die Ärzte – Schrei Nach Liebe Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Die Ärzte – Nichts in der Welt Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I agree. "Liebe ist nur ein Traum, eine Idee und nicht mehr. Tief im Inneren bleibt jeder einsam und leer. Es heißt, dass jedes Ende auch ein Anfang wär'. Doch warum tut es so weh und warum ist es so schwer?" My favorite verse of all time! |
Die Ärzte – Hurra Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I don't think it takes a genius to read between the lines here, but take this verse as an example: "Gestern ging es allen dreckig, heute geht es steil bergauf, Jeder hat 6 richtige, alle sind total gut drauf: Europa, Asien, Afrika, Australien und Amerika Friede, Freude, Eierkuchen, alle singen jaaaaaaaaaaaaaa" I don't know how you can listen to this and not realize that they don't really mean what they say here. To me, it seems to be criticizing people who think that everything is okay in the world. Obviously, only a few people ever win the lottery, and the relationships between Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and America are anything but "Friede, Freude, Eierkuchen." And especially the line "Und überall, wo man hinguckt: Liebe und Frieden und so..." seems to be very ironic, especially because it ends with "und so..." It just gives you the feeling like they're saying it without believing it. It's almost like saying, "überall, wo man hinguckt: Liebe und Frieden usw." |
Die Ärzte – Grotesksong Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I don't know... although the song is called 'Grotesksong', it seems to me every time I listen to it that they really hate activists or hippies. Maybe it really is only making fun of people who really protest against everything, just for the sake of protesting and not because of any true beliefs. Perhaps they are criticizing "Protest um des Protestes willen" or something like that? |
Die Ärzte – Die Traurige Ballade Von Susi Spakowski Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I find the last verse of the song to be very troubling. It just makes it seem like no matter how badly you are mistreated in your life, you can't do anything about it and you can't get revenge... or at least, if you try to do anything, you'll go to hell. This is probably the only truly sad song die Ärzte have ever recorded, in my opinion. |
Die Ärzte – Deine Schuld Lyrics | 17 years ago |
lol @ *Millencolin* If there was ever any Ärzte song that had a serious message, it's probably this one. But you might have been joking and the sarcasm was lost in the expressionless void of the Internet. |
Rammstein – Dalai Lama (English) Lyrics | 18 years ago |
It seems to me that the child in the song is more aware of the danger than the father is. The kid hears all these voices and can sense the storm coming, while the father is just focused on getting back home. His child even asks, "Don't you hear the thunder," but the father is still oblivious at that point and it's not until the storm finally hits that he sees the truth in his child's predictions. As he starts to hold the child instinctively, like parents do in such situations, all is already lost. In the end one can't be quite sure whether the child's difficulty in breathing comes from the drop in pressure in the airplane, or from a supernatural source that is out to claim the child for itself, or whether the father unintentionally suffocates the child due to his own fear. |
Rammstein – Mann Gegen Mann Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I kind of had the feel that they're criticizing many people's blind hate of homosexuals and describing what a gay person has to deal with in everyday life. As for an interpretation, the lines "Das Schicksal hat mich angelacht ... warf mich auf einen warmen Stern" (Fate has smiled upon me ... and threw me onto a warm star) I think represent how many homosexuals feel: they often say that they didn't "turn" gay but were that way ever since they were aware of their sexuality. The "warm star" would in this case stand for homosexuality because, at least from what I heard, Germans have the expression "warmer Bruder" (literally, "warm brother"), which is similar to the English expression "flamer". |
Rammstein – Feuer und Wasser Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I agree with sunshine_arakhan, although I don't know whether it's that he is in love with her or whether he's just more infatuated with her physical beauty... Also, is it just me or does the third stanza sound vaguely like a rape-scene, where he basically describes that he tries to force himself onto her ("I grab her with my wet hands/Smooth as a fish and cold as ice")? |
Rammstein – Mann Gegen Mann Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Thanks, alemur, for clearing that up. I have another question for you native German speakers out there. I've had a lot experience studying German now, but I have never come across the expression "Zungen, die schlagen". Is this something that Rammstein made up and it's just supposed to be a metaphor, or is it really an expression that has a specific meaning? I tried to look it up, but all I found was "das Zungenschlagen", which is apparently a clinical term used to describe some sort of abnormal movement of the tongue... Can someone help? |
Biz Markie – Just A Friend Lyrics | 18 years ago |
lol, biz markie can't sing... and sometimes he can't rhyme either |
Talking Heads – Psycho Killer Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I looked for this song for years because there was a reference to it in the PC game "Broken Sword II - The Smoking Mirror". George Stobbart, the hero, is saying at one point how back in the '70s his band in college played this song that went "fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa", which made them popular, or something. Anyway, I just discovered what the song title is recently and got the song right away - and I really love it. As to the discussion about genre: if I had to classify the band based on this song, I'd probably place them in the new wave category rather than punk. There's just something about the vocals that just really reminds me of new wave stuff. |
Guano Apes – Open Your Eyes Lyrics | 18 years ago |
This song's got one of the best intros in music history! |
Dan Hartman – Relight My Fire Lyrics | 18 years ago |
This song has nothing to do with The Doors' "Light My Fire"... the lyrics aren't even remotely similar, so I don't know why you would complain about a rip-off. There was a remix of this song on DDR 2nd (?) Mix I think. Anyway, pretty cool disco sound. |
Rammstein – Mann Gegen Mann Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Well yeah, because that's how Germans would pronounce it... Not everyone goes around rolling the Rs like Till, and not even he does it all the time. |
Rammstein – Zerstören Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I love the last part about the blind girl. |
Die Ärzte – Baby Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Hehe, I like how "äh..." is actually used to force the rhyme with "Leichenteile". |
Rammstein – Mann Gegen Mann Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I mean, it's just a matter of plural vs. singular, 'Schwule' being the plural of 'Schwuler', but I guess I see your point. |
Rammstein – Spring (English) Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Oh wow, that was a completely different interpretation from mine. I thought the song was more of a commentary on today's society. The man only climbed up on the bridge to see the view, but all the people around him assume that he wants to take his life because they can't imagine why else he would climb up there. They spur him on to jump because of their own thrist for blood and drama. Come to think of it, it's like all those people who watch reality TV because they're entertained by other people's misery and because they want to see what kind of outrageous things are going to happen next. |
Rammstein – Mann Gegen Mann Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Huh, I seriously thought he says "Schwuler" and not "Schwule"... This song is probably one of the best on the new album in my opinion: the puns are just awesome and the part after the 2nd chorus is so haunting. I love it! |
Rammstein – Benzin (English) Lyrics | 18 years ago |
It seems that fire/pyromania is a theme that can be followed throughout the album Rosenrot - admittedly, it can't be found in every song, but Benzin, Hilf mir, and Feuer und Wasser all deal with the topic of fire directly and it gets mentioned in the other songs indirectly... or am I reaching too far here? Anyway, the first time I heard Benzin, I thought it was about self-destructive behavior, like drinking alcohol in excess (high-proof liquor could be compared to gasoline :). But upon listening to it more, I kind of came to the same conclusions as the other people here about a 21st century addiction to oil. |
Die Ärzte – B.S.L. Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I thought it was "ich hör' so gerne B.S.L."... I think that's what it says in the official text |
Rammstein – Wollt Ihr Das Bett In Flammen Sehen (English) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
=Filth=: Dolch = dagger Degen = technically means 'epee' but is also used for 'sword' in general billywoods1: 'ihr' might be addressing humanity in general, condemning its thirst for blood. To me, "ihr denkt euch darf die Unschuld küssen" means that the people who are addressed here believe that they are innocent regarding "all the dead" in the world, but everybody is responsible for the deaths that occur, directly or indirectly. If you don't try to prevent someone's murder, can innocence nevertheless "kiss you", even though you didn't personally kill that person? |
Rammstein – Los (English) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
But to me, the second and third meanings seem to be the same. 'Gott los', if I understand correctly, means something like 'disattached from God'. But wouldn't that be the meaning of 'godless'? Or am I mistaken in thinking that 'godless' means 'not believing in God'? |
Die Ärzte – Hurra Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Indeed... I love this song because you can listen to it the first time and think it's just a 'feel-good' song, but then you realize that it means the exact opposite of what it says. |
Depeche Mode – Personal Jesus Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Okay, let me explain what I meant, because the day I typed my comment about phone sex, I didn't have much time... All right. So let's say that there are people who call a phone sex line to hear a woman moan and talk dirty and all that. But then let's say that there are also those who are truly lonely and don't have anybody to share their life with, those who have things they need to get off their chest but don't have a beloved whom they can share those feelings with. A phone sex hotline is unique in that it can offer a sense of intimacy between two complete strangers, so that you can feel compelled to confess your innermost secrets to the person at the other end of the line without worrying about ever having to face that person. It's a feeling of intimacy and distance at the same time, and the person who is paid for their services can make you feel good without being sexual, simply by listening to you. I don't know, maybe I have a screwed up logic and a messed up imagination, but that is what I meant with my earlier comment. |
Gackt – Vanilla Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I'm only the second guy to post in this thread... >.> Anyway, my sister really likes Gackt and she went through a time when she listened to his songs a lot, but this is the only one that actually stuck with me bacause Gackt just sounds very cool in it. The falsetto he does is awesome. ...... I'm really not gay, I swear :P |
Die Ärzte – Zu Spät Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Do you guys like the band's 'older' stuff more than the 'new'? Personally, I think that they've made some of their best music after their re-union in the early 90's, when Rod joined them. I like the lyrics to this song because anybody who has no money would feel the same way, but music-wise it sounds too much like pop-rock, like many other Ärzte-songs from the 80's. That's not to say that they haven't had good music in the 80's, but it just seems like 'Zu Spät' and 'Teenager Liebe' are very far from being considered punk-rock. |
Die Ärzte – Trick 17 M.s. Lyrics | 19 years ago |
What does the title of the song mean? Is it some kind of code? What does M.s. stand for? Maybe my knowledge of German idioms and pop culture does not reach as far as I thought... |
Die Ärzte – Ich Bin Ein Punk Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I can't completely agree about "5,6,7,8 Bullenstaat". There is clearly a reason for this album's only being sold at conerts and not in stores - to me it sounds more like a demo tape than an actual album, but it has some good songs on it. Cops Underwater, Bravopunks, Punkbabies, and the live version of Paul are my favorites from that album. In general, die Ärzte sound a lot more 'raw' in a lot of these songs. |
Die Ärzte – Grotesksong Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I do have a question, however, that occured to me the other day: How does this song fit with Deine Schuld, in which they actually encourage people to protest? It's almost like they hold opposing points of view in the two songs. |
Die Ärzte – Anneliese Schmidt Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Is Analyzer Smith by die Ärzte as well? |
Die Ärzte – Schrei Nach Liebe Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Find ich genauso. Habt ihr aber mal das Video gesehen? Schien manchmal eher lustig, obwohl der Text doch ziemlich ernst ist... |
Die Ärzte – B.S.L. Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I was wondering what it stood for myself when I first heard the song (which was actually only about a year ago :), so I did a Google search and this is what I found to be the most likely definition: Brentworth Sound Lab (BSL) makes high quality loudspeakers. According to their own description, their product "delivers a musical performance that has every nuance preserved." (www.brentworth.com) Here are some pictures: http://www.cadencebuilding.com/cadence/bslpix.html Maybe I am wrong, but I figured that since in the song Farin likes to listen to very loud music and the speakers have a relatively broad frequency spectrum without loss of quality, he would probably like this particular BSL product. (Sorry if this sounded like an advertisement ;) |
Die Ärzte – Kopfüber in die Hölle Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Yeah, I guess you're right. I think that the fact that they are from Berlin and that this song came out on their first album after the re-union of Germany led me to believe that it was about the disillusionment of capitalist life. But now that you say it, it seems more likely that it is about punks who have abandoned the ideals of the punk movement (thus the calls for revolution and the mention of Hertie, where they probably wouldn't go shopping). |
BoA – Duvet Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Also, EmpyreanVagrant, you said that you didn't really like any of the other boa songs you downloaded. They are certainly somewhat different from Duvet and I guess I had to 'get used to them', too. But two of my favorites are 'Fool' and 'Welcome' (and I realize that this is probably not the case for most people), so you can maybe check those out if you haven't done so already. |
BoA – Duvet Lyrics | 19 years ago |
There was a question as to why this song's name is 'Duvet', and I have wondered this for a while, too, but I think I saw the answer among the comments here. EmpyreanVagrant mentioned that the song is fragmented, which I have to agree with - it's kind of like a patchwork with a bunch of different metaphors taken and put together. A duvet is kind of like a quilt, which is also a patchwork of different kinds of patterns and materials. I don't know, that's what I thought of at least. |
Depeche Mode – Personal Jesus Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I think the song is about phone sex - quite seriously. |
Rammstein – Ohne Dich Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I think I can see where sonne mond is coming from though. First of all, a most of the songs on Reise Reise sound very similar melody-wise, and second of all, almost every song on that album follows the same structure. I still like Ohne Dich, however, even if it is a bit simple. I wouldn't go as far as calling the album trivial - not every Rammstein album can be ground-breaking, but if it's not, it doesn't mean that it's trivial. |
Nirvana – Tourette's Lyrics | 19 years ago |
One thing I never understood is why you would want to become a musician who plays in front of audiences if you fear becoming famous. I guess Kurt never really believed that he would achieve the kind of fame that he ended up achieving, and it caught him by surprise, like it did pretty much the rest of the world... |
Rammstein – Reise, Reise (English) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I'm not sure why "Reise" is translated as "arise", since the word is the imperative form of "reisen", which means "to travel". So, shouldn't it be "Travel, travel, seaman, travel"? |
Rammstein – Wollt Ihr Das Bett In Flammen Sehen Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Technically, 'wollte' is the past tense of 'wollen', and 'wollt' is the abbreviated form of 'wollte', so Andromedae, whether he knew it or not, is correct... |
Rammstein – Amerika Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Don't you think that kind of defeats the purpose of the song? |
MC Hammer – U Can't Touch This Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Here's the rest of the lyrics... ... Or a tape to learn What it is going to take in the '90s To burn the charts Legit either work hard or you might as well quit That's the word, because you know U can't touch this U can't touch this Break it down Stop. . . Hammer time Go with the flow It is said That if you can't groove to this Then you probably are dead So wave your hands in the air Bust a few moves, run your fingers through your hair This is it for a winter Dance to this an' you're gonna get thinner Move slide your rump Just for a minute, let's all do the bump Bump bump bump Yeah, U can't touch this Look man, U can't touch this You better get hyped Boy 'cause you know ya can't U can't touch this Ring the bell, school's back in Break it down Stop. Die Ärzte – Kopfüber in die Hölle Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I think that this song is about the aftermath of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the re-union of the two Germanies that followed it. People in East Germany were calling for revolution - or the overthrow of the Soviet regime - because they dreamt of a better world and they thought it would be easy once their country re-united with Germany. It turned out, however, that West Germany wasn't without its flaws and a lot of East Germans, who weren't used to a free market, for example, wanted to go back to the way they used to live in East Germany. Hence the words 'Es war 'ne lange Nacht/Ich wünschte wir wär’n niemals aufgewacht' - the better world of which they had dreamt turned out not to be much better than the world in which they had lived; it would have been better had they not awakened from their dream in the first place. |
Die Ärzte – Grotesksong Lyrics | 19 years ago |
What a great song - I hate obnoxious hippies, too. |
Rammstein – Amerika Lyrics | 19 years ago |
sexyjedi, your statement towards Germans really isn't fair - you could make the same statement regarding every single nation in the world, because there is not one nation that hasn't had a bloody war in its history. And considering America's history of war, I wouldn't complain about any other country criticizing the U.S. for being warmongers... |
