Billy Bragg and Wilco – Hesitating Beauty Lyrics | 17 years ago |
This is going to suond extremely typical but I love this song. It reminds me of my best friend. I wouldn't say it described our relationship perfectly, but it reminds me of our relationship perfectly. There are select lines in the song that don't really reflect us, but the song as a whole does us perfect justice; not even necessarily her being a hesitating beauty, but just the whole idea of looking toward the future and seeing all of these beautiful wonderful things that we'll have and share together. The song is very lovely. |

Oasis – Headshrinker Lyrics | 18 years ago |
You can definitely hear their punk influence in this song. This is so fuckin rockin' it's ridiculous. |
Oasis – Mucky Fingers Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Obviously not political per se but rather opinionated for an Oasis tune I always thought. Great song. Very simple. And yeah, I think on the DualDisc version of DBTT on the DVD side Noel talks about how they were listening to the Velvet Underground while writing this song or something. He mentioned something of them. Great song though. I like the simplicity. I like punk though so this is clockwork for me heh. I really like the line "and as you face your disease you can squeeze into the emperor's clothes" I think the line "You get your truth from the lies you were learned" speaks of people growing up being told all of these things that we become slave to, like tradition in general feeds us into this direction of being, and really it's all just a bunch of lies. Then Noel goes and says "you found your god in a paperback" that's great to hear. |
New Radicals – Jehovah Made This Whole Joint For You Lyrics | 18 years ago |
...also the thing at the very end of the song where Gregg Alexander sings "dying DYING" is maybe him saying the chorus was sarcastic, that this world isn't really that beautiful - he just feels like dying. |
New Radicals – Jehovah Made This Whole Joint For You Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I think this song is about how people suck, and how even some people who seem to be out there living a radical lifestyle and doing radical things are often times hypocritical themselves. Though definitely not a slag on living a radical lifestyle; just pointing out that even the punk rock hippie girl of today can suck as much as the business man. Also I think this song touches lightly on trust, with the lines "does she think i'll rob her and run" and the thing about stealing her purse. |
Against Me! – From Her Lips to God's Ears (The Energizer) Lyrics | 18 years ago |
"democratic election under marshall law an Iraqi president out of control on choices" -- the Iraqi election because of the war in Iraq (yes, some people wouldn't pick up on that) "after all this death and destruction do you really think your actions advocate freedom?" -- questioning the war, beautiful i might add (the lyric, not the war) "the presidents giving a speech in georgetown to remember the voice of a slain civil rights leader do you understand what the martyrs stood for oh condoleeza do you get the fucking joke? NO" -- The president is remembering a slain civil rights leader yet he won't fight for gay marriage, or for all intents and purposes, gay rights, so he obviously DOESN'T understand what the martyr stood for. Condoleezza doesn't get it either, and that's the joke. The thing is this song isn't supposed to be funny, I don't think. It's an extremely serious topic, and yes they're making fun of Condoleezza, but it's not really funny at the same time. Great song. |
Green Day – She's a Rebel Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Very interesting comment, Bradcd. I've never heard that idea before. I don't know if I agree, but the thought is titilating to say the least. I'll have to think about it some more to come up with something. |

Against Me! – The Politics of Starving Lyrics | 18 years ago |
A closer version of the corect lyrics I've made up: It's time for some real world politics economics, history, math, and english born, and raised and bred walking a thin line between lost and succeeding it's another cannibal the rules aren't changing, if you really don't like it, if the threats always been there the terror always happens For all the fights, for all the songs, all we said all we have is these pictures of us and if it doesn't matter now then it never really did without this we might as well be dead They're all black and white people and that doesn't have anything to do with us after all these years it's still an arms race after all these years they still don't fucking get it lives and cultures matter more than capitalist interest it's the FBI, it's the CIA, it's the ATM, it's the IMF, MTV takes it to the end, fuck you For all the fights, for all the songs, all we said all we have is these pictures of us and if it doesn't matter now then it never really did and without this we might as well be dead When you are so hungry that you'd believe anything well they're selling you the politics of starving and what the fuck does that really mean to us? |

Unwritten Law – Coffin Text Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Absolutely fucking amazing song. One of their best ever. This song, to me, talks about the relations between ancient Egypt and today. Everything is so mysterious about it but do we really understand it? Could it all be a hoax? With the rise and fall of Egyptian empire, we're fighting, learning, saving, burning, never knowing what is coming next. Lying, stealing, never healing, safe to say we've all been hexed. It's in the coffin text. That's what I think, and that's what they think too....I think. |
Bad Religion – My Poor Friend Me Lyrics | 18 years ago |
A friend of mine has this cd and her liner notes don't have lyrics, but the ones in mine do. Go figure. Two different pressings. |
Blink-182 – I'm Sorry Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Jinx, you've shed new light on this song! I never saw the lyrics this way. Maybe it is about Scott! Like pre-Man Overboard or something. Read my comment about "Lemmings" where I mention this song and stick it with your idea of this song, I think you could be right. Not sure of course, but that's cool you see it that way. That'd be creepy to the max if it was about Scott! Crazy man, just crazy. |

Unwritten Law – California Sky Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Fucking incredible song. Surely an anthem for any kid who likes UL and lives in CA, and any kid that can relate to loving music - especially with other people - ("it's magic to see their minds filled with the music we feel"), and making some sort of connection with the place we grow up. A lot of people hate their towns but a lot of people like where they grow up because of the people around them and the way unwritten laws are rulers, not controlling bullshit or segregation or competition. These types of communities are rare these days but do still exist. I think this song is indirectly referrencing them. UL speaks of where they grew up and how it will always be home because of the people, places, and unwritten laws - the chemistry of it all. |
Unwritten Law – Sorry Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Scott Russo is a bitch but this song is fucking sweet. One of the catchiest songs I've heard. It's cheesy but in a slightly intentional way as it's a fun[ny] song about...well, isn't it obvious? Great tune! |
Blink-182 – Freak Scene (Dinosaur Jr. cover) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I think this is about the punk scene at the time it was written. The SoCal punk scene, to be specific. The last line always gets me, with the way Mark sings it. It's awesome. |
Unwritten Law – Legend of Johnny and Sarah Lyrics | 19 years ago |
This is a funny song about this guy, Johnny, that picked up an STI from this girl, Sarah. She was the town bike and will be 'til she dies. The song is cleverly written and makes for a decent album closer for its host, Oz Factor. It's got a pretty memorable hook of a tune, and is one of the slower songs on the record while keeping it interesting. I have no idea if this is based on specific actual people UL knew but somehow it wouldn't surprise me if it were. They did live with crazy Poway kids..haha. |
Strike Anywhere – Refusal Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Kuck, I don't think I've ever been further from understanding the plain of someone else's thinking. I'm being completely serious. |
Unwritten Law – Genocide Lyrics | 19 years ago |
what the hell is the "to attack abrahadabra " at the end for? Russo doesn't say "to attack" again and I don't even know where "abrahadabra" came from? Does anyone know if that's what it says in the liner notes that came with the cd? That's my only explanation for it. |
Unwritten Law – Superman Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I think this song is about society, trends, and the government. "I don't want to follow you can't make me follow I don't want to follow you cant make me follow now " and superman might be a sarcastic perspective on how the government thinks it's so big and tough and so righteous "here I come to save the day". "you've been on my mind and I don't think I have the time to listen to your voice I've heard it all before, it's been seeping through the floor shut behind closed doors "...I think describes UL's take on The Man's voice, how they keep spewing out the same old patriotic white capitalist hoopla year after year behind closed doors, but as it seeps through the floor UL can hear what they say. They don't have the time to listen to them however because they either don't want to or are too busy doing what they want to do, not what The Man wants them to do. I know this is all extremely topical, but that's just what I get from it. |
Unwritten Law – Harmonic Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I think this song is about them not sounding punk on ELVA and Here's To The Mourning. They were sick of being a punk band and wanted something more. They were a punk band in the beginning ("well it was fun at the start"), but maybe UL was really destined to go on and do other things ("but maybe we're worlds apart"). They got sick of all the hecticity within the Southern CA surf/skate/punk scene with fashion and egos turning the tables and didn't want to "stay and drown" because "the drama got too thick". The rest of the song is pretty self-explanatory from my point of view. |
Unwritten Law – Before I Go Lyrics | 19 years ago |
yeah, that last line didn't turn out...I meant for the second UL to be crossed out but it didn't work for some reason... |
Unwritten Law – Before I Go Lyrics | 19 years ago |
This song is about their friend Scott who killed himself. The song is written in a reversed person tense, taking the expression through the eyes of Scott (not Russo) and the pain he went through, what he was feeling right before he killed himself. The build this song has is extraordinary, I can feel the pain every time in Scott's hollers, Rob's and Steve's haunting backing vocals, with Wade's frantic mystical earthy drumming - the song is amazing. Don't say what the song is about unless you honestly know. It's not about Russo's son. I didn't even know he had a son. In any case, whether he does or not, I heard Russo talk about this song before they played it for the first time live. Stop talking out of your asses. I'm not trying to be a jerk, but I seriously mean it. Don't say shit you don't know is true. How would you like it if I told you your mother had just killed herself but I really didn't know what I was talking about? Yeah, you wouldn't like that, so shut up unless you have something good to say. If you honestly believed this song was about Russo's supposed son then whatever, I'm sorry. Let's just do our best at posting truth. This site is amazing, let's make it the best site with the best content as it can have and be. *UL - Wade = UL* |
Common Rider – Blackbirds Vs. Crows Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I think this song is about people in general, fighting against eachother. "They look to be the same breed but they can't stop fighting", like different races go to war with eachother but really they're of the "same breed", we're all human beings. "there's got to be more to this life than kill or be killed" - amazing line. |
Rancid – Life Won't Wait Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Oh yeah, one more thing - I think this song is about the world turning to a new direction with people being peaceful to eachother, spreading the word ('tell your sister and your brother'), and that life isn't going to wait for us to change ourselves for the better. We have to do that. |
Rancid – Life Won't Wait Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I love this song. Buju Banton is great, and this is great ska. This is what I hear after SEVERAL continuous repeated listens... Jesus standin' on desciples wage a final war Religions and procedures keep the quest for the holy grail The eye atop the pyramid is open and awake The pagans hold the rituals and the choir won't begin to sing... The vision is a new world order The vision is a new world order The vision is a new world order Come along and tell your sister and your brother! All that I know is the force of war with the dynamite blast rides on the weak and the poor Don't wanna see my brother in any more pain when the little man fights all the big man's wars Dont know nothin' 'bout no red white and blue Little man makes the bigger man dough Too many win , nobody lose It all comes down to whatever they choose The vision is a new world order The vision is a new world order The vision is a new world order Come along and tell your sister and your brother! The conscience of the public cannot be put to sleep The condoning of the nations have no bounds in which they seek Was it the mob tellin' the CIA to install this state of fear How many of us wish that we were at Jeff Kennedy's hearing say... The vision is a new world order The vision is a new world order The vision is a new world order Come along and tell your sister and your brother! See them tryin' to rule the world We don't know why Why they want to rule the world cuya cuya! Hoping wise men have dawned on some other one Who weapons of mass destruction, them finding 'em out My world is only so much bondage Here they come in regard of these knees World wide hunger every town the one fear Well gangster treaties who keep us in fear How much more can our people bare? Need no more division Need no more violence on none, I will keep on fighting to keep what's mine We the people speaking our mind And once more, would you say it for me now? Dynamite blast with the force of war Government rides on the weak and poor Don't want to see my brother in pain no more When the little man fights all the big man's wars One's times these days bring 'da mizer Ends all slavery with the clever disguise Uprise and our people must rise Decide your fate, our life won't wait! Life won't wait! No, life won't wait!... The vision is a new world order (life won't wait) The vision is a new world order (life won't wait) The vision is a new world order (decide your fate) Come along and tell your sister and your brother! The vision is a new world order The vision is a new world order The vision is a new world order The vision is a new world order The vision is a new world order The vision is a new world order The vision is a new world order Come along and tell your sister and your brother! (oh yeah) |
Bad Religion – Automatic Man Lyrics | 19 years ago |
"He's our saviour, he is the common man" - that line always stuck out to me. Honestly, I'm not quite sure what BR means by it, but I always took it as a statement on how the common everyday man is the person that can bring change in the world, not the simple belief in someone you don't even physically know (possibly Jesus). |
Descendents – 'Merican Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I own both Cool To Be You and the `Merican EP, with this song being my favourite on both. This is the best Descendents' song. It puts America and its history in a perfect non-preachy nutshell. It's totally true and right to the point. One of the best songs I've heard by anyone. It's a classic punk anthem from an old proper pop-punk band. |

No Use For A Name – Sleeping In Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I always took this song as being about someone that very firmly believes in God and the other person feels like they could "never take the place of him" because they first person idolizes God and not the other person. It can be rough, I've been in those situations (being both the believer and non-believer). |
No Use For A Name – Why Doesn't Anybody Like Me? Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I agree completely with ONaCarousel. I own More Betterness! and I think the entire record is written from the perspective of a child. I think Tony Sly had a shitload of problems growing up, still dealing with them to this day, writing some of the best hard-nosed power pop-punk I've ever heard. It's very poppy but with big balls. Tony Sly is no slouch. |
Blink-182 – Feeling This Lyrics | 19 years ago |
the video is really good. one of my favorite videos ever. i like how in the school the kids override the system and leave the class a mess (almost like in Pink Floyd's The Wall), and the two kids on either side of a pane of glass...that part is really intense. It's cool. |
Blink-182 – Easy Target Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Did anybody catch the [probably indirect] Social Distortion reference? ("Southern California's breeding mommy's little monster") Someone correct me if I'm wrong but didn't at least one of the two (Mark and Tom) listen to Social D when they were teenagers? |
Anti-Flag – Your Daddy was a Rich Man, Your Daddy's Fucking Dead Lyrics | 19 years ago |

New Found Glory – All Downhill From Here Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I agree with Die80sdie. Specifically I think this song is about NFG's relationship with Geffen Records and how they've fucked them over ever since they signed to Drive-Thru Records (which is jointed with Geffen - though at the time was known as MCA Records). "you contradict the fact that you still want me around" -- Geffen Records markets them making NFG look like pretty boy fools, telling them how to write their music, setting up photo shoots, etc., to NFG that's bullshit, so it's like 'you guys put us through all this stupid shit and you're telling me you still want us around?'. The whole album Catalyst is about Geffen/Drive-Thru Records; a big FU to fucking them over basically for the last 5 years. |
New Found Glory – Intro Lyrics | 19 years ago |
This song sounds like fuckin' Sick of It All. Does anybody hear it? Well anyways, I feel this song is about them and the current state of the music industry (more specifically: pop-punk) and NFG have always been themselves. Yeah, they're a bit goofy, but they take their music very seriously. They all grew up in a scene and understand what it is and isn't to be [a] punk. They've always been pop-punk since the Nothing Gold Can Stay days, and that was almost 6 years ago - a little before pop/punk became a fashion. This song is a testament of all that, and how they're pissed off about it all, including MCA (now Geffen Records) [jointed with Drive-Thru Records] fucking them over. And actually, if you listen to the whole album Catalyst, it's massly about that. Though it's all cleverly written in a way where if you didn't know the guys you'd think they were just writing songs about girls again. Listen to "All Downhill From Here", it's all about NFG's relationship with their record label. It's beautiful. But yes, this song is a great song. It says plenty. For the kids that don't get it, good, but for the kids that get it, great. |
Against Me! – Turn Those Clapping Hands into Angry Balled Fists Lyrics | 20 years ago |
I agree totally. I remember the first time I listened to this song, unlike any other track on As the Eternal Cowboy, I immediately got exactly what this was about. I mean, it is my own interpretation, but I didn't even get that with the other songs. On a related note - the reason why I love Reinventing Axl Rose more than this record is because the overall vision that Tom had was so much more...I don't know how you'd say it...user-friendly? I don't know, that's just me, though. In any case, GREAT fucking song. It talks about the typical day of the typical person and how they don't even think about it. In this case, Against Me! has done the thinking for them, and I think it'd be cool if this song opened some people's eyes. Not to say that I nor Against Me! want everyone to think the same, but I think they're really on to something with this song. |
Ani DiFranco – Serpentine Lyrics | 20 years ago |
The lyrics listed here are pretty close, but if you go here: http://www.righteousbabe.com/ani/l_serpentine.asp ...those are the right lyrics (Ani's site within the Righteous Babe Records site). |
Bad Religion – American Jesus Lyrics | 20 years ago |
I would basically agree with WayneSaysYes. It's the power of [good] music that causes change in hearts and minds across the world. Not that other things don't/can't, but there's nothin' like a great fucking tune. Over the years, BR has done this on a consistent basis (minus the last few years, in my opinion). |

Me First and the Gimme Gimmes – Brown Eyed Girl Lyrics | 20 years ago |
I don't think if Me First has or hasn't done a cover of this song but I do know that Lagwagon has done a cover of it. It's on their album Trashed. So, if the posting of these lyrics under Me First is indeed incorrect, then...umm...yeah, that sucks. |
No Use For A Name – Chasing Rainbows Lyrics | 20 years ago |
I can't believe no one has mentioned this yet, but I think this song may have an underlying appliance to a former relationship one of the guys in the band may have gone through with someone who believed in God or something. As a whole, I think this song is about what pretty much everyone here has stated, but on a more personal level I think it might be about something like that. It makes sense when I read the lyrics, anyways. |
No Use For A Name – Leave It Behind Lyrics | 20 years ago |
Hmm...I find this song a little harder to relate to than most of their songs, but I get a general sense of the recognition that The Man is at it again..this time it's not just taking over the world in a figuritive sense, but a literal sense! Chemical plants, wasteful people, ignorance of peoples' actions that affect everyone and even the earth. "Junk mail stacked up to the sky, recycled paper and plastic, then we said that we would try, decreasing figures were drastic but I guess it did no good (correct lyric - the one posted here is wrong, even though the liner notes for ¡Leche con Carne! may say otherwise; this is what Tony actually sings in the song if anyone can't figure it out lol) nobody cares about it, not much emotion in my neighborhood, my apartment's made of wood, I haven't given more than I could"... ...I think expresses the pollution stats have more than reached impure levels and how politicians claim to do something about it but they never do...people just don't seem to care, and NUFAN's venting their frusteration with it all. Also, NUFAN realizes that their apartment is made of wood (or whoever specifically wrote the song) as to make a point that our lives are pretty much sitting on the use of the world's resources, and they don't feel that they've really given back as much as they could've given the grotesque amounts of earth we dig apart everyday. I f***ing love this song, and yeah, in short it's about the earth and how people today don't really seem to give a sh** about it, or anything for that matter. |
