"badges to earn" == Stare at the sun?

might be a stretch, but made me think of the bridge:
I know that there's a point i've missed,
a shrine or stone i haven't kissed,
a scar that never graced my wrist
a mirror that hasn't met my fist...

Thrice – Listen Through Me Lyrics 10 years ago
I think this song is about Dustin and how his Christian message keeps being denied by 'fans' who would like to think of this music they like as purely secular (i guess because it's not cool to be Christian)

I know I would get tired of people continually refusing to acknowledge the Christian message of my music (you see a LOT of this, even on this site right here, even for songs that are unambiguously Christian) and engaging in mental backflips to find interpretations that point to something other than Christ (lookin' at you, wowzers99 on the internet!). It's true that Thrice are an amazing band with a vast repertoire of incredible music, only *some* of which is overtly Christian, and most of it can be meaningfully interpreted in other ways. But i often read comments on some songs and have to struggle to keep my eyes from rolling back into my head at some of the willful misinterpretation of what is clearly and plainly Christian messaging, much of which comes from a place of disdain for that message. so when Dustin sings:
"LISTEN to me! I speak truly!"
I'm hearing him urge us to accept that he his who he is and he is conveying a Christian message. Major/Minor is an album that is straight up Christian almost to a song. it's wall to wall bible references and Jesus metaphors, people! it's the most blatant album yet for this stuff!
"though i speak of sober things"
he knows you want all the songs to be about breakups (i'm guessing most of you people are teenagers, because everybody wants every song to be about a breakup apparently) but he's straight up telling you in this song, "yeah, i write songs about Jesus. I want you to accept that and accept Him."

For whatever reason, some people can't enjoy music that is Christian. in the PC world christianity is offensive. so those people will do all kinds of mental gymnastics to pretend that this music they like, because it's Thrice and it's awesome, isn't Christian so they can keep enjoying it. to you, Dustin says"

"This story's an offense
So get down from that fence
And bless or curse"

in other words, yes, my music IS an offense (it's Christian) so quit pretending it's this or that, preserving the 'ambiguity' which justifies your appreciation if you won't let yourself appreciate that message... admit it is what it is and either embrace it or don't.

and this section:
"see these ragged shoes the soles are worn straight through while i proclaimed"
tells you that his music has been coming from this place THE WHOLE TIME. just in case there are those people out there like, 'meh i liked thrice in the early days before it got all Christian'.

of course i think most people i'm ranting against won't get the message anyway, but there's my take on it.

Jonathan Coulton – Today with Your Wife Lyrics 10 years ago
This song has a definite feel to me of reminiscing over someone who has died. I imagine a trio of good, longtime friends. Two got married, but then one died; the singer maintains his friendship with the widow. The wistfulness of the refrain, "you should have been there" reflects the regret and mourning over the loss.

if it weren't for the 14 years bit, i'd say this is "the green mile". fits perfectly, other than that i don't think the prisoner in the green mile was incarcerated for 14 years, they pretty much fast tracked them to the electric chair back then...

i would like to point out the the lyrics are wrong here, though. i'm positive that the ninth line should be:

"throw the switch, son; i know you ain't got a choice"

and i can't be certain, obviously, but i hear the chorus line as weight rather than wait, as in:

"while the weight of an endless glory still remains"

i would be absolutely shocked if this song was in fact meant to have anything at all to do with drug use, hospital policies, doctors, medicine, self-mutilation, or suicide.

the new drug, the new blood, these are metaphors. these are things that behave in a way love might, although they are in fact a cheap mockery of love, not real, but destructive. what it is, in fact, is an overreactive solution to a problem. a lot of the lines are ironic. and i'm out of time

i think it's silly to make this song mean one specific thing. obviously it' alludes to the general notion of a witch hunt but saying that it is specifically referring to the salem trials, the the red scare, or the patriot act is not doing the song justice. but then i also think it's a little silly to even think that this message would apply to post 9/11 america... that's beside the point. i see the this song as illustrating a facet of the theme that propogates through a good chunk of this album, that is, an exploration of the unjustice in a totalitarian society. maybe the writer thinks that post 9/11 america is turning toward such a society (however absurd the thought is), but i take the target to be more general. a type for the descent into fascism. but anyway, i think the message is a good one even though i don't feel it is very applicative to our current political situation, and i absolutely love the way the brutality of the guitars and voices and drum help enhance the lyrics. perhaps my favorite song on the album.

Splender – I Apologize Lyrics 19 years ago
well i was confused for a good while, especially at the semen part. i was like wtf? but really, LJetta33 prolly hit it right on the head- look at the lines "for rain that's fallen halfway down the sky", "you float like an angel", "i don't think you'll feel it now". plus the abortion theme finally makes the semen line fit in. the whole tone was always about something unfinished to me (like a pregnancy?) like a mixture of remorse and vindication. a genuine apology that almost sounds sarcastic because of relief that it's over.

sorry guys, i ain't buyin it. no way this is about suicide. it's more about not fearing your end, accepting that life always changes and eventually ends, and when it does, go with the flow! notice the mellow, soothing, yet haunting tone.. it's all about letting it go.

clearly she has already had an abortion and is having problems living with herself. her parents upset, her religion in question, she probably is feeling really down on herself (do you wake up all alone and wonder where you are?)

the guy is somewhat disappointed he won't be a father (don't suppose i'll ever know what it means to be a man) but he loves her so much that he is willing to go along with her desires, all the while trying to make her feel better about herself.

lol nice apostle quote! but really-- 'boring beatles song'? how can you even pretend to know anything about rock music if you don't recognize the beatles for the geniuses they were? that's like praising beethoven yet scorning mozart, it's ridiculous! modern rock owes EVERYTHING to the beatles, and eleanor rigby is one of the best.

well first of all i'd like to point out that just because the band holds christian beliefs does not mean all of the songs, or even MOST of the songs have anything at all to do with christianity. having said that, on to my humble theory!

to me it seems that this song is inspired by the short story "the dead" by james joyce. this story, as you may or may not know, is regarded by many literary thinkers as the best short story ever written. the fact that the writer is very well read (so i hear) makes me suspect that this song has little or nothing to do with religion (unless you use the term loosely), but instead puts into song the thoughts inspired by Joyce's story, also as some sort of tribute to Joyce. the story may seem a little dry, but it's really deep if you look for it--i won't explore all the parallels between it and the song, but if you read it (it's not that long)(short story, duh) you may see what i saw. you'll also notice that in the song the phrase "we are the dead" is so strongly emphasized, a casual listener might think that was the name of the song--i do not think this is an accident. so anyway, read the story, listen to the song, see if you agree with me.

when i drew the connection i thought for sure i could confirm it, but no one else seems to have seen this! so either i'm way off, or no one else just bothered to post about it, but it seems highly unlikely i'm the only one who noticed!
