my take on the references: on fire - galaxie 500 album "on fire" lady day - billie holiday birthday - the birthday party (?) nick drake - nick drake i remember at one point hearing that the 'birthday' reference was not in fact a birthday party reference but can't remember what they claimed it referred to, thus i stick with the birthday party as it makes sense to me |

| this song, from what i understand, is about a patient at an AIDS clinic in california which jamie once worked at. jamie befriended the patient and wrote this song about him. as far as i know jamie does not have AIDS himself. if i remember correctly this info is second-hand from jamie (that is, i heard it from a friend of jamie) | |
