Bright Eyes – Light Pollution Lyrics 19 years ago
yeah... it's sort of a fight club mentality, if you will. "it's funny how alive he felt/ down in that unemployment line." the subject of the song felt the most alive when he was out among the "little people," at the bottom of the ranks. tying that into John A. Hobson seems easy, then, if he was a Marxist economist. the song tells the story of "his" [whether the real Hobson, a fictional character, someone based in real life, or some combination of the three] fight against the government, capitalism, etc.

"whatever sells will decide/ but there's no hell when you die/ so don't look so worried," refers to a rather cynical view of capitalism and the big corporations [see: martha stewart, enron, etc] doing whatever it takes to make a fortune. the song documents the Hobson character's own individual fight against that. and in the end? he drove out past the cops, the crowd, and the mall [government, ignorant public, big business] and got in a car crash and died. part of me thinks we're supposed to wonder whether it was truly an accident or if he gave up, as well.

really great song, one of the catchiest on Digital Ash, and quite possibly my favorite (at least for now). and i love the new political vibe; this song is only one great example of how pop culture and music should combine and embrace world and domestic issues... too good.

Hanson – A Minute Without You Lyrics 19 years ago
there is something just classic about this song. it is the epitome of a fun, lovingly sweet pop song, and i love it. it's going on eight years since middle of nowhere was released and i first heard this song, but i still adore it just as much now as then. <3 thirty years from now, if hanson released a "best of" album, i'd bet this song would have a secure spot on the tracklisting, even after that time.

Le Tigre – Bang! Bang! Lyrics 19 years ago
the count to forty-one at the end is chilling, to say the least. the song is fairly straight-forward: open your eyes, this is what's going on, get active and DO something about it.

this song is just so sweet and innocent. about pure love, that will never be lost. the almost whispered "i love you" at the end is the clincher, every time i hear it. beautiful. <3

Matthew Good Band – The Fall of Man Lyrics 19 years ago
this is a creepy song, and i love it for it. i like to think it's about organized religion sort of clouding peoples' minds, leading them in the wrong direction--and ultimately to the fall of civilized society and all mankind.

Elliott Smith – Oh Well, Okay Lyrics 20 years ago
someone close to him seems to have fallen into a bout of depression or maybe just apathy ("the bleeding color gone to black, dying like a day"), and the speaker is frustrated because he doesn't know how to help bring the life back to them. "if you get a feeling next time you see me/ do me a favor and let me know/ 'cos it's hard to tell/ it's hard to say/ oh well, okay." he's saying, if you ever feel like you can tell me how to help, DO SO, because it's so hard to stand here while you're hurting and be powerless.

it's a feeling of helplessness when trying to aid those you love, but can't. one of my favorite elliott smith songs...

Matthew Good – While We Were Hunting Rabbits Lyrics 20 years ago
quite possibly my favorite song on avalanche. i love when the choir comes in with "and we dance and we sing/ and we're all monkeys in a long line." and, of course, the building up of "i'm just a boat on the ocean/ i'm just a ship lost at sea"... too perfect. that feeling of isolation and bewilderment of being a tiny speck in a vast area of nothingness... amazing song, lyrically and musically.
