Well, the way I see it, and the way i've heard the band explain it, the song is meaningless. Apparently, they liked the phrase "dinosaur act" and started writing a song around it. The imagery is beautiful, as with most low songs.
I am sure you can put any meaning you want behind the lyrics, but I don't see a point. I kind of like the idea of no meaning. |

Very similar sound. Also keep in mind that Drew and Feist have been making music together for almost a decade...that might explain it. SO happy for this album. BSS has really changed to landscape of pop and rock in recent years, and it is great to see people like Kevin Drew and Feist finally getting some attention as individuals. Also, J. Mascis AND Spiral Stairs are on this album, which makes it officially kickass. |

Both are good songs kinda slow and sad. I don't really get the same feeling from this song though. It alsmost seems more...personal? I love the Decemberists, but listening to their music always feels more like reading a novel.

who cares what this one is about. the piano is beautifully dark. The lyrics are great as usual, even if nobody can understand them. The ending is haunting...very haunting.

This song seems almost meaningless, but I think menomena just has a knack for referencing themselves. When he says that he gave his hand, I think back to the song before this one on the album, "boyscout'n". That song seems to be about blind faith for the most part. He mentions lending his hand to destroy a helpless man. Could be a stretch, but maybe the invisible friend is the supposed "savior" from the song before. Now using the bee metaphor, he feels needed because he is another cog in the machine. It doesn't matter what he's told to do, because he's wanted by the others. Sounds like a cult to me. but who knows. |

Ok, this song seems important in reference to the rest of the album. Especially regarding the song that is before this one on the album, "running". Both songs are seemingly ambigous, but together, they kind of paint a picture of an incredibly desperate individual who is sort of out on his own in the world. Not eating, getting thinner, trying to stay warm. And this song shows that same individual as a potentially paranoid person loosing his grip on his sanity. The end of the song gets very dream-like as he repeats himself. Just a theory. but the songs seem like they fit together. Doesn't really apply to the rest of the album. |

Not really sure what this song is about...but the lyrics are awesome. Could be about a guy trying to survive on very little in very bad weather...but that'd be a bit too literal for these guys. All i know is that I love the cow noise. |

very ambigous song...the lyrics kinda make me feel it could be a vague take on relgion. More importantly, the self-rightous people in charge of religion. If you don't believe their words and beliefs, you are damned to hell. All the while with this "we're in this together" type of message that they really don't back up. The last bit kinda seems like one man's stand against this system. But yeah, no clue. any ideas? |

Great song. obviously about a pair of lovers that had a very strange relationship. It would seem that one personality was an egomaniac. The other personality seems to feel inferior, but holds this against the other person. Kind of making it impossible for them to really move on.
What I really think is interesting is the relationship of the slide guitar and the real heavy sax lines. The guitar mimics the vocals in the melody, and the line is played real subdued. It is definitely the inferior voice to the sax lines, which demand a lot of attention from the listener. Just something I heard. Seriously, do these guys have a bad song? |

The lyrics in this song are amazing. The way they set their lyrics to the music is just perfect. That being said, I have no clue what this song is about.
but...maybe something to do with a post-apocalyptic future society discovering the ruins of our present-day civilization. Just a guess. |

but yeah, great song. definitely a little more to it than sex. Kind of holding onto a relationship with someone you want to be with, but isn't right for you? Holding onto the hope that they will change, perhaps a sunnier attitude? Only the guys that wrote it know for sure...sly dogs...

ok, i'm going think outside the box and go ahead and assume that they aren't really talking about birds...
My guess is some sort of metaphor towards the "battle" between the have's and the have-not's. The pelican represents a kind of greedy, glutton that lives off of others. This could be anything from a greedy business owner mistreating his employees to a corrupt government treating it's people terribly. The point is that this kind of situation ultimately leads to rebellion; or in this case, a final verse.

uhm...no and no. Although Artie was the strongest man in the world, i don't believe that he was infused with iron. He got his powers from his magical striped underwear...duh. The song seems to be about some sort of superhero figure that is doubting himself and is cracking under the pressure of his own responsibilites. Just a guess. |

It's a great song...and in some respects, I agree with both of you. The first line references one of the most famous speaches of all time. This makes me think the song about never achieving anything great, even though you've tried. Now the title and the second part of the song kinda prove that the song is about never really achieving or feeling anything from sex. As if sex were a meaningless action that he's just going through. Or so it seems... |
