I think this song is about someone who was in with a bunch of junkies but he wouldn’t join (‘Syphillis is a bitch but contracting HIV is much worse.’) them so they left him, he found new friends ‘but sometimes it all depends on how tall they all against yourself.’ The main character back in time represents looking back on his life and deciding when he was happier; trying to sane up with his junkie friends or trying to keep up with his new ones.
Or that’s what I get out of it, at least. Either way, it’s a great song. |

Yeah, very ironic if you think about it that way. But I think the song is more about a manipluative friend or lover who controls you and takes advantage of you, then splits, hence the "i heard you found another audience to bore" and "the invisible man who's always changing clothes." But maybe I'm just applying it to my real-life situations. |

This song is amazing, by far one of my favorite Elliott Smith songs, almost hidden at the end of his self-titled album. As with everything he does; the simple-sounding complexity of the music and lyrics make you listen to it over and over again... amazing. |
