Bob Dylan – Love Sick Lyrics 20 years ago
This song turned me from an appreciator to a die-hard fan. I grew up listening to Dylan, my parents always played his records and I liked them, yeah? But I didn't love them, I didn't quite get them. But one day I scraped up some nickles and dimes from under the sofa cushions and purchased Time out of Mind on cassette. I remember when I first played it, how I giggled at the cover photo and slid the tape into the player with great trepidation. He's an old guy, after all, and this album couldve very well sucked. But. This first song. "Love Sick". Blew me the fuck away. So cool, so palpably cool.

The Weakerthans – Watermark Lyrics 20 years ago
Sampson's got a knack for writing songs that draw you in with their sadness - because you're sad too, you feel it, all angsty and mopey - and then end up with hope. Like the characters stop being self-pitying by the end of the song, and so do you. <333.

The Weakerthans – Fallow Lyrics 20 years ago
My favorite Weakerthans song, and I love all of them big bunches. I think it's the hope in the last verse, that there's all this sadness and unease and bitter nostalgia - then there's these sort of sweetly hopefull lines ("But 6 ft off the highway, our bare legs stung with wheat, we'll dig a hole and bury all we could not defeat") and they just break my heart.

Yaphet Kotto – Circumstantial Evidence Lyrics 20 years ago
Yaphet Kotto are such an amazing band. I hope it's 'are' and not 'were', I can't keep up with all the breakups. So sad :( Yes but this song. So good. Hearing this song live was one of the highpoints of my life. It was right around the duct tape hysteria, when everyone was just freaking out about terrorism and waving their flags. And to hear this song, so loud and powerful and emotional, packed together with dozens of angry sweaty punks, all raising their fists...it was amazing. Yaphet Kotto are just so goddamn pure. One of the few good emo bands left.

Elvis Costello – Kinder Murder Lyrics 20 years ago
The third stanza has the best lyrics about sex ever. Ever. So hot, but in that literary, Elvis-y way. Mmmm. Anyway. It's about a guy in the army who impregnates a teenage civilian. The line "He left her senseless" was changed to "He fucked her senseless" during the tour, so that part's pretty incontestable. So yeah, he knocks the girl up, and she tries to marry him. His superiors are all, "we can't let this get out to the press." He thinks it's her fault, he doesn't want anything to do with her or the baby, "she could have kept her knees together/could have kept her mouth shut." So he pressures her into an abortion, the 'kinder murder'. The end, I'm not so sure about. "He said he was just taking up space"...he commits suicide by crashing the car? Hmm. Anyway, this is an absolutely brilliant song, great guitar and vocals and everything in addition to the lyrics. One of the best album-openers ever.

Elvis Costello – I Want You Lyrics 20 years ago
The live version is the definitive version. I saw him when he toured with the Imposters, and holy crap. So passionate. Like he was making love to his song onstage. It left me breathless, literally; I felt like I should've been smoking a cigarette after that or something :) It's such a creepy song, but the intensity makes it sexy, which in turn makes it creepier.

Elvis Costello – Dust 2... Lyrics 20 years ago
Anybody else notice how many times he talks about taste in WIWC? It's kinda funny. Anyway. The lyrics are absolutely amazing here. "marble fingernails of kings and saints", "she caught you staring, she knows what you're thinking." Guh.

Elvis Costello – Beyond Belief Lyrics 20 years ago
The average songwriter, when referring to a bar, will say 'bar', or 'pub.' Elvis says 'gin palace.' Damn. This song's got all the clever wordplay that was in Get Happy!! but without the preciousness.

Elvis Costello – Everyday I Write The Book Lyrics 20 years ago
Anyone else get the feeling he was on autopilot for this one? It's the kind of theme he'd normally use for a couple lines. It really doesn't work stretched out over the whole song.

Elvis Costello – Broken Lyrics 20 years ago
Buddy Holly was the first to wear the glasses, but Elvis made 'em cool. Anyway.

Didn't Cait write this? Creepy song.

The song does rock indeed. Love the dada-esque last stanza.

Elvis Costello – Welcome To The Working Week Lyrics 20 years ago
Well, the first line's about masturbation. The rest is about how tough working-class life is. These things are presumably related.

Orchid – Aesthetic Dialectic Lyrics 20 years ago
It's about the emo scene, pretty much. How it changed from kids who had their hearts and souls in the music to a bunch of hipsters with fancy hair. And Washington DC created emo, so.
