Yes I've heard that it was the ratio of Vietnamese soldiers killed to American soldiers killed.

The Doors – The Celebration Of The Lizard Lyrics 20 years ago
I haven't heard anything regarding the lyrics, but I've made my own speculations that its an overall reflection on how easily people are manipulated. Or maybe just a warning of the cunningness of false prophets. The song starts out with the campfire song, and slowly degrades into an angry and twisted tempo until it lets up in a moment of clarity. Then Morrison talks in the first person and says "I am the Lizard King". Then he goes on to add how all the people there came from all around, and he gives some backstory on his exile and return. The last line, "I want to be ready", echoes a chilling tone to me. Ready for what? Probably the slaughter of those who wronged him in the past. It would seem that murder was the reason he was exiled in the first place (We're going on the run). So if this were true, then bloody vengeance to those who wronged him is not out of the question. Whether this song reflects something in the real world at the time it was made or it was meant as a timeless message, I don't know.

An awesome song about the greatest general that ever lived.

Sing as you raise your bow, shoot straighter than before.

This sounds to me like Legolas. "Singing" his praise of his bow (as in counting his kills), and his need to shoot straighter than before to help compensate for the fact they are outnumbered. Just something to add.

Led Zeppelin – Immigrant Song Lyrics 20 years ago
I think this song is about just the Norsemen invasion of Europe in general. No actual location is disclosed, just the imagery of the Viking scourge (what they were at the time, of course we see their importance in present day), the Viking boats with "threshing oars" pushing forward to their next conquest. Valhalla is a sort of heaven, but only for warriors. So its basically about Vikings rowing to war and the frenzy that develops

The Jimi Hendrix Experience – 1983 ... (A Merman I Should Turn to Be) Lyrics 20 years ago
Read 1984. See 1983 (A Merman I Should Turn to Be). This song puts you in the place of a man that sees the global war of the socialists that will turn all the major countries into socialist regimes. Its a fantastic song, but saying its OMG VIETNAM is a baseless arguement. This is Jimi taking a horrific ideal like 1984, and saying fuck this, lets go breathe underwater away from this chaos.

Pink Floyd – Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts I - V) Lyrics 20 years ago
The steel breeze most logically means fame and its utter shock. Imagine a breeze. What do you think of? A nice, cool wind that whips through your hair. Well, a steel breeze would be more like getting hit in the back of the head with an I-beam. Plus, if you're hit with something like steel, you're going wherever the steel is going you have no say in the matter. The immense force of the "steel breeze" propells you and throws you away whenever it feels fit.

The Doors – When The Music's Over Lyrics 20 years ago
This is probably my favorite Doors song. It's imagery is so incredible, it's just an epic song in every sense of the word. The beauty and the horror are woven together seamlessly by Morrison. If anyone calls Morrison a fraud poet, this song is proof of why he is the "American Poet".

A fantastic psycho-ride. You can just sit back, and play this song and be immersed in its atmosphere. One of my favorite Doors songs.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience – Voodoo Child (Slight Return) Lyrics 20 years ago
I love Jimi's use of the Wah pedal in this song. It's a shame that this song has been used to death by car commercials and conglomerate commercials trying to relate to a young audience.

The Doors – The End Lyrics 20 years ago
Yeah because to be a good poet, you have to have some fantastic deep meaning to your writings to be taken seriously right? Poetry isn't about trying to impress people with your stupid insights, poetry is about expression. The End is a fantastic expression and it broke countless barriers. Think about when this song was released, and what Jim would do with it on stage. The "Fuck the mother, Kill the father" lines that he got fired from Whiskey for are tame now, but back then, something like this was REVOLUTIONARY. The fact that it does follow a stream-of-consciousness path, by delving into Morrison's mind, is in itself indicitive of great poetry. The ride through Jim's psyche this takes is just proof that Morrison was a great poet, to be able to create structure to his abstract feelings is just proof of his ability. Not because he had some lame political ideology.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience – All Along the Watchtower (Bob Dylan cover) Lyrics 20 years ago
Listen to sadistic sniper you tools, this song isn't about Vietnam. This song is about social reform. Bob Dylan originally wrote this song before the American escalation of Vietnam, and Hendrix did nothing but add music to it. Yet his music added such an impact to the song that it propelled it to a different stratosphere. The song is about social reform in the establishment and it's views about the worth of humanity, coinciding with what? The social reform of the 60s. Notice how Jimi Hendrix plays. The slide guitar in the middle, sounds like arguing voices. And throughout his playing, as he builds up, he never quite reaches that one note that he hits at the end again and again and again. It's a metaphor musically for the building of resistance, the buildup to the revolution. But Bob Dylan leaves you to speculate on it since he gives no concrete conclusion to the song. It is up to the listener's discretion to decide the end to the song.
