James Taylor – Fire And Rain Lyrics 21 years ago
This song is about James' friend, Suzanne, who commited suicide. A lot of people think it is about a plane crash because of the line "sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground" but that is actually a reference to the break up of his band, Flying Machine. The opening line ("just yesterday mornin, they let me know you were gone") is stating the fact that he didn't find out until about 6 months after it had happened because he was away. There are also references to James' heroin use which was at its peak, like in the stanza that starts "Won't you look down upon me Jesus..." where he expresses the seriousness of his usage and the consequences of continuing on this path. This is a wonderful song and never ceases to make me teary-eyed.

Pink Floyd – Another Brick in the Wall, Pt. 2 Lyrics 21 years ago
It's about society molding who people are, causing everyone to mold into the same person, and therefore, destroy their true uniqueness. Pink Floyd rocks!!

Hole – Old Age Lyrics 21 years ago
Yea I heard that this was Kurt's lyrics too. Just look at them though, they are extremely Kurt-styled. Whatever, at least his music is still getting played. I do think she is a talented artist as well, all though I am not nearly as fond of her as I am of Kurt.

Hole – Northern Star Lyrics 21 years ago
Wow these lyrics put me on the verge of tears... it's surely about Kurt and how much she misses him and about both how they were together and where he is now.

Hole – Hit So Hard Lyrics 21 years ago
This is definitely about how she misses Kurt and feels guilty about his death. Not that she killed him, but the fact that maybe she could have done something to prevent him from commiting suicide.

Hole – Awful Lyrics 21 years ago
Hmm...this song can be written about so many things. It could be how she feels her band sold out. It could be about how she misses Kurt ("he tastes like candy, he's so beautiful. He's so deep, like dirty water. God, he's awful"). It could be about her bad relationship with her father because she talks about being sixteen and she mentions "where's your daddy." It could be about how people accuse her of killing Kurt, which "break"s her. I don't know which it is, but I think it has to do with one, a few, or all of those.

Hole – Heaven Tonight Lyrics 21 years ago
I'm not sure which this is about, Kurt or Frances. It could be about both. Maybe it's about how she is finally learning to live without Kurt because Frances helps her to live again.

Hole – Malibu Lyrics 21 years ago
I think this song is a sort of tribute to Kurt, mourning his loss. When she says "How'd you get so desperate? How'd you stay alive? Help me please, burn the sorrow from your eyes" it sounds to me like she is asking him why he had to kill himself and it reminds me of Kurt's big baby blues. The line "how are you so burnt when you're barely on fire?" I believe is a reference to Kurt's suicide note ("It's better to burn out than to fade away") and I think she is saying there how is he "burnt out" when he has no enthusiasm for life anymore? Allusions to Kurt, I find, are consistent throughout the song as she talks about angels and the sun going down. Maybe Malibu is standing as a metaphor for heaven, an escape. I think when she says "And I knew love would tear you apart. Oh, and I knew the darkest secret of your heart. Hey, hey I'm gonna follow you...I can't be near you, the light just radiates"
she is expressing her attempt to restrain herself from following his path. RIP Kurt!! Props to Courtney for this album.

Hole – Celebrity Skin Lyrics 21 years ago
Okay, I am a huge fan of Kurt Cobain and I do not think Courtney had anything to do with his death. I think she did mistreat him, but every relationship has its ups and downs. I'm sure she loved him and I think it is very harsh to accuse someone of murdering their husband. As far as the song goes, I think it does have something to do with Kurt being that it is about (part of) the reasons he killed himself. It's talking about how fake and glitzy Hollywood is and how everyone is selling themselves out ("Oh Cinderella, they aren't sluts like you"). I also think she is telling everyone to fuck off because she refuses to give into what the media wants her to be, hence "Oh make me over, I'm all I want to be...You want a part of me? Well, I'm not selling cheap."

Nirvana – Aneurysm Lyrics 21 years ago
I don't think this song is about heroin. I think it is about two things: 1) his stomach ailment and 2) the fact that he threw up because he was so upset after Tobi Vail broke up with him. Hence the line "love you so much it makes me sick."

Nirvana – You Know You're Right Lyrics 21 years ago
Now that I think of it...I think the version you are thinking of is "You've got no right" in which the lyrics are slightly different...for example "I'm so warm and calm inside"="whistle and I'll come inside", "steaming soup against her mouth"="she just wants to love herself", "always knew it would come to this"="I am walking in the piss", "you know you're right"="you've got no right".

egb, there are actually two versions of this song but you are right, one of them says "I have never felt this well." The other version says "I have never failed to fail."

Nirvana – Pennyroyal Tea Lyrics 21 years ago
I think this song basically revolves around Kurt's (still) unidentified stomach ailment which caused him to be in pain constantly. His doctors tried various cures, such as "warm milk and laxatives, cherry flavored antacids." The whole "anemic royalty" is simply who he was; he was anemic, and he was a rockstar.

Nirvana – You Know You're Right Lyrics 21 years ago
This is definitely one of Kurt's darker and more serious songs, in my opinion. I feel like this song is almost an additional suicide note. And an angry one like that. With lines like "I'm so warm and calm inside, I no longer have to hide" Kurt is expressing his complete loss of enthusiasm for life. Lines like "I will never bother you" and "I will move away from here" and "I will crawl away for good" are just self-explainatory; Kurt was planning to kill himself. When he states "things have never been so swell, I have never failed to fail" he is expressing his self-hatred. This song was almost a goodbye to his fans. RIP Kurt.

Nirvana – Smells Like Teen Spirit Lyrics 21 years ago
I think this song has so many messages in it it's crazy! And they are all so strongly present. This song was actually written about Tobi Vail of the band Bikini Kill who broke up with Kurt. He was heartbroken over their split, and the title is a reference to something one of Tobi's friends once wrote on Kurt's wall, teasing him, when Tobi and him were still together. She wrote "Kurt smells like Teen Spirit" because that was the brand of deodorant Tobi wore, and she was implying that they had just slept together...so the first meaning of this song is the isolation Kurt felt after being rejected by Tobi. Secondly, this speaks sarcastically of the way teenagers are never satisfied ("here we are now, entertain us"), pessimistic ("I feel stupid, and contagious") and blind to their actions("with the lights out, it's less dangerous"), etc. etc... Not only is this song great because it brings up some interesting topics, but it's contrast of soft and loud set it apart from all of the songs of it's time, making it the song that revolutionized rock, and helped the alternative rock movement. KURT COBAIN WAS A GENIUS!!! RIP...keep bangin on that guitar in the sky.

Nirvana – Sliver Lyrics 21 years ago
I think that this song is talking about Kurt's lack of security, as far as family goes. Kurt had constant problems with his parents during his life. As a teen, he went from home to home seeking paternal love and care. It seems to me that in this song the little boy never feels quite at home, even when he is in his mother's arms.

Nirvana – Rape Me Lyrics 21 years ago
I believe verystrongly that this song was targeted at the media, accusing them of raping him. He's not saying that he was literally raped, but he felt physically raped in the sense that he was always in the spotlight and his ideas and lifestyle was constantly being critiqued. In this song he is challenging the media and exposing their insensitivity. He's basically saying come on and rape me, I don't give a shit, it's not the first time you've done it. When he says "my favorite inside source" he is reffering to the Vanity Fair article written on him and Courtney which almost caused them to lose guardianship of their daughter, Frances Bean. In this stanza he sarcastically states "appreciate your concern, you'll always stink and burn."

Nirvana – Polly Lyrics 21 years ago
Umm..this is mostly to the last three comments. Smashingrocker- no, it was not just about a bird. Nirvanafreak- amen to you. CliveevilC- I have to disagree with you because I know for a fact that there had been a rape where the rapists (there were 2 or 3 boys involved) tortured the girl with the blowtorch. But your interpretation was interesting anyway. However, I don't think the girl's name was actually Polly, I think that Kurt just used that to propel the message.

Nirvana – On a Plain Lyrics 21 years ago
This song definitely has drug references...to an extent. I think it is also talking about fame and how he is "on a plain" so he shouldn't be complaining. But he still is, because despite this he is unhappy. When he says "my mother died every night" I think he is reffering back to his parents divorce. That's just my opinion though.

Nirvana – Don't Want It All Lyrics 21 years ago
I definitely think this is an autobigiographical piece. Kurt seems to be talking about his own isolation. Oh, and I believe the line is "double-sided cigarettes" not cynics, which makes more sense metaphorically; cigarettes burn from both ends. Great song, Kurt never ceases to satisfy me.

Nirvana – In Bloom Lyrics 21 years ago
One of you guys said you thought it was about Kurt's friend who bought the gun but you couldn't think of his name; it's Dillan. I agree with some of the stuff people said about Kurt thinking the wrong audience was being drawn to his music and that his lyrics were being misinterpreted, but I also think the whole gun thing puts a suicidal aspect on the song. I think he is partially talking about a person not knowing what it means to kill themselves. And the "nature is a whore" part could have many different meanings, but basically he is saying take what you can; nature is abundant...and "In Bloom." But all in all I think this song has various meanings, and I think that's how it's supposed to be; double-sided. It's just another piece that shows how brilliant and talented Kurt was (may he Rest In Peace).

Nirvana – Heart-Shaped Box Lyrics 21 years ago
This song is about Kurt and Courtney's love-hate relationship, and reffers to a heart-shaped box Courtney gave to Kurt (her first gift to him). The original lyrics actually said "I've been locked inside your heart-shaped coffin.." On the subject of lyrics, those are kinda off. These are the lyrics:

She eyes me like a Pisces when I am weak
I've been locked inside your heart-shaped box for weeks
I've been drawn into your magna tar-pit trap
I wish I could eat your cancer when you turn black

(Pain
Wait
I've got a new complaint
Forever in debt to your priceless advice) x2
Your advice

Man-eating orchids forgive no one just yet
I cut myself on angel's hair and baby's breath
Broken hymen of your highness
I'm left back
Throw down your umbilical neuse so I can climb right back...

Nirvana – Dive Lyrics 21 years ago
Ahhhh so many wrongly printed lyrics!! The second line is "let a long, low signal." The eighth line is "you can even pay them." He does not say "hey" (except in some live versions) he is actually screaming "pain." And before he says "you can be my hero" he says "at least, at ease, yeah." Also, it's "I'm real good at HATING" not "hitting."

Nirvana – Downer Lyrics 21 years ago
Amen to fuhgawz...the lyrics are a bit off! Also, "defending your true country" should be "defend your true country." I don't think Kurt was trying to use big words at all as (it seems) some of you think. He actually said that he just wrote down a bunch of things he was thinking of in no particular order when reffering to this song. However you want to interpret those words is a different story.

Nirvana – Been a Son Lyrics 21 years ago
I agree with egb about the murder theories...they are a bit unrealistic, and I think people who believe that he was murdered are just in denial because they don't want to admit that such a great, brilliant, and talented person would take their own life...about the song. It is not about Frances or even Kurt himself, it is about his sister, Kim, who is a lesbian. It talks about how she was not the daughter her parents wanted her to be, and sarcastically states that she should "have been a son" and "died when she was born." When he says "she should have stayed away from friends," it is stating the thought that many parents have, that their childrens' friends determine the person they are. Therefore, if she had stayed away from her friends she might have been more girly. It was written loooong before Courtney became pregnant with Frances.

Nirvana – All Apologies Lyrics 21 years ago
First off, nice interpretations, guys- very inciteful and interesting. Secondly, the lyrics are not "all in all is all we are" they are "all alone is all we are" reffering to the fact that Kurt and Courtney's relationship was faltering, causing a lack of communication which would eventually the ultimate downfall of their relationship, leaving them alone.
