Lupe Fiasco – Go Go Gadget Flow Lyrics 14 years ago
"like an A in a circle"

Any possibility this is a reference to anarchism? I wouldn't normally think this but the official LASERS logo has a stylized anarchy symbol in it. Anyone know if there is any relationship between Lupe and anarchism?

Muse – Uprising Lyrics 14 years ago
Ding dong: George Orwell, the guy who wrote "1984," was a socialist. Matt, from Muse, has left-leaning political views (and has admitted the album is inspired by "1984," not "Brave New World.")

Gosh, you libertarian nutsos are starting to get on my nerve.

Too bad Matt is admittedly a leftist, economically and socially, so to say that their "Resistance" is in reference to resisting left-leaning government would be the exact opposite of what they actually believe. lulz

Muse – Unnatural Selection Lyrics 14 years ago
Oh Jesus. Please shut the fuck up and take your stupid, stupid NWO conspiracy bullshit elsewhere. Matt is NOT an NWO conspiracy theorist. He HAS gone on record to say that he thinks 9/11 was an inside job, and he may like Alex Jones or some of his films, but that does not mean he is a tinfoil-hat-wearing nutjob, like you, with your inane Ron Paul nonsense. Matthew advocates Georgism, a left-libertarian economic and taxation platform, but beyond that, many of his lyrics can be interpreted quite easily as revolutionary, Marxist, semi-anarchist, socialist, etc. You see, if fringe libertarian nutjobs that rave about NWO conspiracies would just get rid of all of their stupid fantastical ideas about vast conspiracies that are impossible, they'd essentially be anarchists. And being that there have been eloquent anarchist philosophers, but no eloquent libertarian fear-bunkering lunatic philosophers, I'd say that sort of has the one-up. Yes, it's true that Matthew has a fascination and interest in global conspiracy theories. He has admitted this. That doesn't mean he subscribes to them. He's admitted in interviews to being interested in conspiracy theories involving alien visitation – do you think he actually puts stock in that, though?

But anyway, going on a tangent there. The point is, don't read your stupid fairy tales into Muse's music. There is nothing to indicate that this song is any more about NWO tripe than to say that it is simply a revolutionary song, inspired by themes and language of Orwell's "1984" with a double application to today's corrupt political systems of oppression. The references to 1984 are blatant (Eurasia, Thought Police, love is the resistance [nearly a direct quote from the book]), but its nature makes it clearly applicable to politics today. But, that includes US politics, and those of you who say Muse doesn't sing about US politics are wrong. Firstly, in this album, "United States of Eurasia" is a clear reference to the Eurasia of 1984, but in the book, it's not called "the United States of Eurasia." Are you really going to tell me that that's just a coincidence and NOT a reference to the United States of America? Besides, in the song, Matt sings "There can be only one United States, United States, United States..." with a lengthy pause in vocals before singing "Eurasia!" This is undeniably a lyrical technique used to reference the United States of America, and in context of the song and Muse's overall political message, these reference to the USA would make total sense. And then we could always reference back to "Black Holes," which has very obviously to do with the US wars in the Middle East. And yes, I realize the UK has followed the US there and been their partner in crime, but I'd say you'd have a hard time proving that "Take a Bow" is about Blair rather than George W. Bush. Of course, "Balck Hole's" themes are a little easier to digest because they are mixed with the absurd and the comical i.e. the contrived presence of Spanish guitars in "Hoodoo," The "Knights of Cydonia" video, "Exo-Politics" being about alien invasions, etc. "Resistance" is definitely more serious and sober overall, but its references to Western, particularly US, politics are clear, as well as the more general themes of political revolution, resistance, freedom, corruption, etc., and literary themes referencing "1984."

That's probably what it is. Haha. For some reason, because I didn't catch those Wheel of Fortune references, I thought he was referring to the Christian ska/swing band The W's who had a big hit around 2000 call "The Devil is Bad." But what a weird reference that would be...

"I author, like D.W., brother like a hustler"

This should be

"I'm Arthur, like D.W. brother, like a hustler"

referring to Arthur the Aardvark, the children's book character who has a sister named D.W. – this ties in the next line with "God put me in your armor" referring to King Arthur and some versions of the legend having him as God's chosen king for England.

Arkana. I'm not sure what exactly your point is but I've had personal contact with Aaron a number of times and it is clear through his speech that he believes Jesus was/is the litreral son of the only God and that he brought salvation to us by his sacrifice on the cross. However, I heard Aaron say to someone else "Jesus said 'no one comes to the father but through me' but he never said 'no one comes to the father but through Christianity'" so I definitely think you're onto something with your implication that Aaron is not exclusively "Christian" in the sense of the modern American church. Probably, as L.C. Marston noted above, Aaron is striving to be much more like lthe early desert fathers. And as we all probably know and have mentioned, early Christianity and spirituality in the East included a vast array of ideas and conceptions that we really don't have in the modern American church. And that's a loss. Speaking of that, I have been saying how I think mwY will probably break up soon, etc. and my wife said that a friend of her's told her tonight that his friend who is quite close with mwY was saying that Aaron might actually be joining a monastery for a few years. However, this is completely hearsay. Still, it would certainly make sense with the direction that he and the band have been doing, lyricall and musically.

--Ya Rabbi sali alahi wa salim.

"O Lord, send your prayers and peace upon us"

I'm not an expert but from a little bit of research, that seems to be fairly close. However, I'm not sure it is "upon us" so that could change the meaning.

--Sallalah wallah Muhammad (Sal.)

"May God exalt him, [I swear] by God, Muhammed (peace be upon him)"

I'm not sure what's going on grammatically here. Once again, I'm no expert. A lot of this seems to be just various phrases and clauses from Islamic prayers and honorifics pieced together. I'm also pretty sure that Amma and Yassif are names, so Amma Yassifun would be Amma [of] Yassif, indicating Amma being the child of Yassif.

Circle Takes the Square – Crowquill Lyrics 20 years ago
to add on (i had to eat dinner):

i'm a graduated high school student and i remember learning that in 8th grade. honestly, what do they teach kids these days?

besides, your technical disecction of the phrase completely failed to take into account idiomatic principles, which are a vitality. many, many foreign and English phrases don't make sense when observed literally, but their intended and accepted meaning is really what's important. that's why it's necessary to study a culture along with a language, because learning the technicalities of a language is only half of what you need to properly speak it.

in any case, "d'état" is not a single French word, but rather the contraction of a noun and a preposition. in any case, the lyrical element in question here, "haiku-d'état," is rather obviously a play on the well-known idiomatic phrase. why the blatant pun on sound? the meaning is clear-cut within the lyrical context, simply because CTTS lyrics are ripe with vague imagery and metaphor. it's pretty silly to argue the fact that it's a play on "coup d'état," but hey, you believe what you want and we'll all just discount you from the more serious discussions which will transpire.

thanks.

you should shut up unless you actually know what you're talking about.

coup d'état, often called a coup, is a sudden, swift overthrow of a government. a well known term used outside of Francophone countries quite commonly.

hey cjt81286 and katileka.

i believe that haiku-detat is a ply on words. a haiku is a short Japanese poem, usually about nature in it's true form, though other poets use it to writng about anything (as long as it's 3 lines long and has a 5-7-5 meter scheme, you're gold!). a coup d'état is a French phrase (pronounced KOO DAY-tah). so the lyrics shjow a play on these two words. i can't quite say exactly what it means, but that's the idea of the words play.

as far as overall meaning, the CD packaging says (from CTTS themselves):
"in a nutshell the concept behind the songd was to document the different points on a path to self-realization. in our interpretation of this journey, the wanderer ends up in essentially the same place that he or she began, if not humbled and even more overwhelmed. in a sense, the ending is somewhat tragic, but without experiencing all of the lows, how can anyone appreciate the amazing subtleties that this world has to offer? and so, if the search for beauty and understanding is cyunical and unending, then at least we'll never stop experiencing the thrill of the hunt."

it also says that if you have a question about the lyrics, you can talk to them at shows or send them letters/e-mails. their address is at their site www.circletakesthesquare.com

my favourite lyrical moments in this song are

"There's nothing quite so pure as the written word my dear, so lets have ourselves a little poem.
Until the will to speak loses urgency.
Our animal indecency in print is so blase."

&

"Gravity doesn't grant me the privilege of failure, my bough never breaks
I don't stumble into anything"

oh yes, i was going to mention that Carmina Burana is one of my favorite classical pieces. Carl Orff actually got a hold of a bunch of old poetry written by German monks in Latin and Old High German and wrote the music to it, so the lyrics themselves are actually pretty old while the music is remotely new (1930s as mentioned before).

Norma Jean – It Was As If The Dead Man Stood Upon The Air Lyrics 21 years ago
i think that the obvious part here is undoubtebly talking about the story w know of Judas betraying Jesus and then his subsequent suicide... but i think the deeper message, the true meaning behind the phrase "endless cycle" is the fact that WE are all Judas... because everyday we fall back into the "endless cycle" of sin, i.e. the betrayal of Jesus... we betray his love and mercy and grace by being selfish and choosing things other than him... the song speaks of the seemingly hopeless cycle we always rewind...

actually, the Bible is a collection of Hebraic historical documents... i.e. our history textbooks to-day... will people two-thousand years from now say "oh, how do we know that all of this existed... the United States, all these wars and presidents... it's probably all just a story..." the belief that Jesus is God and the only way to Salvation is by faith, although the acutual evidence is quite irrefutable... this is song is amazing because it tells very plainly of a strong conviction of mine, and that is that Jesus is NOT at all a "religion" but a lifestyle, a faith, a personal relationship... i am very openly a Christian and profess Jesus with pride, but i am NOT religious... i don't not go through motions and traditions which are nothing more than self-gratifying and gratuitous... this song touches on a very important point that many many people fail to see in these days... and that is the TRUTH of Jesus... not the fallacy and hypocrisy that has been (unfortuantely) built up around it...
