Against Me! – Thrash Unreal Lyrics
|
I feel like this song is about what society expects out of a woman, the expectations of the scene on women (since it's predominantly male-oriented), and a general expectation women have out of themselves.
I know that the writers of this song are not aware of what women expect out of themselves, but as a woman who used to be a punk rocker, I was torn between acceptance by men and still being thought of as a woman.
The scene has a chew-you-up and spit you out nature. Now that she's fucked, no one cares about her. And she's not society's definition of a lady, "No mother ever dreams that her daughter's going to grow up to be a junkie/sleep alone." Society defines a woman as the man she is with, as the family she creates. She doesn't create a family? There must be something wrong with her. She takes on traditionally male traits? (Junkie, Single, Scene Life) She is considered abnormal or evil.
The irony is that if a song were written about a male with the traits of partying hard, sleeping with young women, staying single, and drinking and drugging, it would be celebrated. Several people have talked about this idea of the woman in a negative light.
See: Courtney Love, Amy Winehouse.
These women are demonized for their rebel ways and addiction problems.
See: Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix.
Will forever be loved and considered heros.

Talking Heads – Once In A Lifetime Lyrics
| 14 years ago

I think this is about being happy with what you have. You wake up one day and say "My god what did I do with my life, it's not anything what I wanted it to be when I was a kid!" Well, no one's life is like that save for the exceptionally lucky. To me this is about looking at your life and seeing it's perfect the way it is, and you don't need to have that large automobile, or that beautiful wife. Not saying "What did I do with my life for all those years?"
People ask themselves this so much, even I have. It's a horrible feeling and it's best to be happy with things that you can't change. |

Kelis – Bossy Lyrics

Oh the lyric is "I told *John Stanier* he should switch to BAPE."
I knew "young Stanley" could not be correct, so I did some research (of what it sounded like). John Stainer was the drummer for Helment and currently Battles. According to Wikipedia, "He is known for his speed, endurance, and precision as a performer," and is "a big fan of hip-hop music. He 'accidentally' became a professional DJ for a year and a half."
This makes more sense. |

Kelis – Bossy Lyrics

I've seen Kelis in interviews and she's actually really nice and down to earth. She's got a sense of humor. Also, if you aren't aware, a lot of hip hop songs are about showing off.
I don't know that the lyric is a response to 50 cent, I think it's just commenting about how her name is tattooed on Nas' arm. Doesn't matter anymore though haha! |

M.I.A. – XR2 Lyrics

808 refers to the Roland, yes.
TLC was a hip hop girl group, T-boz, Left-Eye, and Chili were their nicknames.
OPP could stand for anything you wanted to (listen to the song)
MC-8 is a music sequencer.
PDD does stand for that, but probably not in this context.

Whoever wrote the stuff about the asteroid had to have been high.
This is clearly about the rave scene in 92. Plus she refers to shit from 92 if you're old enough to remember it, you'd know that.
The rave scene was at its peak in the early nineties everywhere I think. I know it was in the USA, also. |

Jay-Z – D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune) Lyrics

I'll correct myself and mention that Kanye actually worked on this song with Jay-Z. So this song is obviously an in-general thing.
I still strongly dislike Kanye West. |

Jay-Z – D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune) Lyrics

I think he sounds like a bitter old man in this song who can't take change. I like Jay-Z but come on.
Yeah I do think it was a dig at Kanye though, and that dude deserves it. Some of the shit he puts out. Jayzus.
A lot of musicians are really experimenting with sound right now, it's like it's become okay to do it again (when it wasn't for the majority of the nineties). I love it, and I'm hearing a lot of stuff that sounds like nothing I've ever heard before.
Kanye West, though, is not an innovator and not one of these amazing musicians I'm talking about. I agree with Jay-Z to an extent, but to another extent, music changes and sometimes older people just don't like what the younger kids are into. This is a really great song though. It's very artistic. |

Er I didn't read all of what you said, but gangsta rap isn't even popular anymore. What are you still stuck in the nineties?
And Kanye West didn't come from a poor background either, he's just a gay fish.

someone said they'd rather be a loser than a moronic hipster. hipsters are different than popular people. hipsters are there before it gets popular. just had to make that clear.

afi has never been the shit, i dunno what's the problem with "selling out". They're like, surface punk anyway.
It's not surprising they got on the radio, because they're totally radio friendly (tut... yes they are.)
I'm not bashing this song though, I actually like it.
I really hate people saying all the songs on here have to do with sex, I think it's some kind of inner battle, having NOTHING to do with sex. |

all of you people debating their lesbian stance are fuckheads. Who gives a shit? It's good music and that's all that matters.
Anyway, I know PLENTY of lesbian bands that are great (The Third Sex is one.) I know that you aren't debating that lesbians cannot make good music. (Actually they make better music than straight woman, I've noticed.)
I am straight, and I don't care if they're straight, bi, or asexual. It doesn't matter. |

Kim Wilde – 2-6-5-8-0 Lyrics

The great thing about Kim Wilde is that her and her band were mixing ska and reggae with new wave way before the whole ska craze. 1984 or 85? I don't remember but this is a GREAT song. I couldn't believe there weren't other KW songs on here. Oh yeah, this song is about a call girl. duh. |

Dashboard Confessional – Screaming Infidelities Lyrics
| 22 years ago
|
these lyrics are nothing that someone else in a depressed state couldn't write. They aren't spectacular, they only seem that way to some others because they've gone through or are going through it.
The only good thing about this song is the chord change at the end. The line "your hair is everywhere screaming infidelities" is great imagery. You can just imagine a girl with hair displaced when he approaches her, quite obvious that something is amiss.
But that, alas, is the only good line. Rhyming of where with wear isn't that great, either.
I don't care for dashboard confessional, and though I am not a real fan of emo, I don't think that he expresses real emo. Listen to some Bedhead.
