Kanye West – Gold Digger Lyrics

tsct1990: cold, pain, rose, rain, tomb, key? It's such cliched imagery that it makes for terribly poetry. If you want good poetry, read TS Eliot. For the record, this song (Gold Digger) isn't poetry either, but at least it's a humourous take on the travails of life . So yeah, I guess I'm saying I would rather hear about Tyco and lipo. |

The Shins – When I Goose-Step Lyrics

This reminds me of a scene in Apt Pupil, where Brad Renfro's character makes Ian McKellen's ex-Nazi character strut around the room in his old military regalia. I don't really see a connection, though. |

Counting Crows – A Murder Of One Lyrics

I'm not a fan, but my girlfriend is. Anyway, we were watching a Simpsons episode where Homer befriends a bunch of crows. So Marge says something about how she wants the flock out of her bedroom, and Homer corrects her, saying a group of crows is called a "murder". So suddenly, she made the realisation (my girlfriend, that is, not Marge) that this might be a more subtle meaning of what the title of this song is alluding to. I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere else, so I thought I'd post this. That joke where Homer is hanging out at Moe's with all the crows surrounding him, and then Moe goes, "all right, Homer, this ain't a crow bar, THIS is a crowbar..." and then he whips out a painting with a bunch of crows sitting on tiny barstools... man, that's classic... |

But for the record, "to cut the mustard" can also mean "to make the cut", "to pass muster". I think Tubesocks' explanation works pretty well in conjunction with the part about scrutinizing breath, though. I didn't think of that. Neat. |
